Important business decisions

Posted in Noah Updates
Mary Faith is finally really feeling better, and Noah (praise God) has apparently not caught her infection.  His transfusion brought his hemoglobin to an incredible 14.2 (he's never been above 13), and he is looking great.  He has so much color in his cheeks that I keep feeling his forehead to be sure he doesn't have a fever!

I'll post more "family stuff" later, but right now I wanted to let you all know about how the CPSIA has impacted our homeschool company.

We have made the excruciatingly painful decision to discontinue our Hands and Hearts History Discovery Kits.  These are our own products that we lovingly developed and that have blessed thousands of homeschool families around the world.

I sent out a newsletter with details about the decision.  If you are interested, and if you aren't a subscriber, you can read the contents of the newsletter here.

I also wrote a detailed article about the CPSIA and how it is affecting all of us.  The article also contains an action plan with a number of steps you can take to make your voice heard on this issue.  You can read the article here.

We know that the king's heart is in the hands of the Lord, and that He works all things together for our good.  We can't see it right now - we just have to believe.  We are sure there will come a day that we will be able to give God the glory for all ways He worked through this situation, but right now we can give Him praise for Who He is.

Blessings,
Kate

Kate, I just got done sending out a copy of your business letter & article to many of my own contacts in hopes that there will be strength in numbers responding to this issue. We have been blessed ourselves through your business and with your history kits, so this really saddens me! May God bless your dear family with grace & wisdom...He is able! I really admire your unswerving faith. Indeed, God is the master puzzle-piecer, and one of these days we will be able to step back and stare in amazement at the puzzle of our lives as He puts it together. We are all like characters in a book, and if we let God hold the pen, we will be able to read the story of our lives as written by Him, and it will have a happy ending.
May God bless you, and may He make His light to shine in your darkest times!

Here's a blog that details how we can contact the CPSC. I don't have a home based business, so I'm not sure how strong my voice will be heard, but it might be something that you could do.

Thanks!

Kate,

I am so sorry to hear your decision concerning your kits although I am not surprised by it. We are really struggling about what to do with our own kits. I know you understand what we are going through, maybe better than anyone else. These are our sole source of income and we have invested so much of our lives into their development. I just wanted you to know that we have been praying for your family as well as other homeschool businesses as we have petitioned God to intervene and save us all from this poor piece of legislation.

With empathy,

I am so sorry to hear that you need to possibly close your business because of this new law.

I wanted to let you know about the clarification that relates to selling used books and clothing since you mentioned it in your article.

I have been following your blog for a while, and wanted you to know to take heart!! The new law has received so much bad publicity that they are working to make small business owners exempt, or at least have a form for them to have their products exempt.
I sew and sell cloth diapers here in SC, and have just started my business. My cousin is a lobbyist in DC and has taken up our cause. Hopefully it will help :)

Guinever, that link pertains to USED items from resellers, not new items from retailers. Kate will indeed be required to test her items to continue selling unless the lawmakers get their heads of of their butts and realize that this law is punishing American small businesses over the failure of Chinese companies to comply with the pre-existing lead paint ban.

Dear anonymous,
I know that the link pertains to used items. I said as much when I posted the link. Kate mentioned sellers of used items in her article and it was somewhat apparent to me that perhaps she hadn't read the clarification yet. I wasn't posting the link because it pertained to Kate's history kits which are new items.

still praying for Noah and praying that CPSIA would be amended or repealed.

I know this will be bad and I ache and hurt for all of my homeschool friends that have businesses. No one is bringing up another issue. I was a Nest Family Vendor for 7 years. I became really good friends with all of the vendors. The conventions are dependent on the vendors to open the centers and have speakers, etc. No vendors, no convention! Well, this CPSIA law will put out majority if not all Homeschool businesses and small businesses alike. This will all but put an end to your conventions too. Praying for you guys. We miss you guys.

Kate,
I don't know if this will help you at all, but thanks to Amy from the list, she posted an update on a meeting on the CPSIA issue. Here it is:

Kate,
have you checked out HSLDA's statement about how the CPSIA will/won't affect curriculum vendors? Check it out at http://www.hslda.org/docs/news/20091130.asp
here is a tiny excerpt:

How does the new law affect homeschoolers who sell used textbooks and other educational materials to other individuals, including those who sell through the online HSLDA Curriculum Market? How does it affect vendors at homeschool conventions? These transactions are subject to the restrictions of the federal law under CPSIA. However, it is likely that most of these materials contain no lead or phthalates, are not banned hazardous materials, and have not been recalled by the manufacturer. And sellers are not required to test or certify any of these products, new or used. That’s the responsibility of manufacturers and importers. Sellers are simply prohibited from knowingly selling products that fail to meet federal standards.

Hope this might be helpful!
Blessings to you and your family
