teetering

Posted in Noah Updates
All of the doctors are working hard on a plan to get Noah home this week.  I asked what criteria Noah had to meet to be sure that the plan worked, the doctor said, "Not get worse."  In typical Noah fashion,we are now teetering on the brink of "worse" in several areas.  His hemoglobin is falling, his white count tanked, his line site might be oozing a little more than it was before, and he spiked a fever tonight.  It wasn't a really high fever, but it was the first official fever he's had this admission. It is really a very great relief to know that none of this is a mystery to the Great Phsysician.

Noah has also definitely felt  more draggy today.  The whole wagon issue was pretty much a non-issue because he didn't even ask to leave the room until after 7 this evening.  Fortunately, I had "backup" at that point to help with the wagon and we took Noah outside to the hospital garden.  It was cool and pleasant and he enjoyed walking the paths, but most of the time he just wanted to sit.

All sorts of labs are being repeated and we should have a more clear picture of  "the plan" by sometime tomorrow.   We still don't know what is growing in his line, and that information could be very important.

The bottom line on the MRSA is that it is likely to hang around sticking to his line in tiny amounts even after we finish his IV antibiotics, and it is likely to flare up around his line again.  We can't know if it will flare up in a mild way like these last two times, or if it will hit his blood and knock him flat.  The very good news is that he is no danger to anyone around him.  MRSA is everywhere now, and we are all frequently exposed to it with no ill effects.  Noah's infection is completely contained by his dressing so he has absolutely no way to get his hands on it and spread it.  There is no airborne transmission unless the patient has MRSA in their sputum and they are coughing.  This is something you would see in a respiratory patient,  not in Noah.  The doctors have emphasized that the other children are in NO danger from Noah and that he will not spread this to his siblings, friends, etc.

He's getting ready for his benadryl, so I need to cut this short.  I'll update when I can tomorrow!

Blessings,
Kate

Jun. 29, 2009 - Noah maybe going home. . . :)

Posted by Carla
Oh, Kate, I'm so glad to hear that Noah may be able to go home this week. What a birthday present for Hannah that will be, to have you guys home. :) I'm also glad that they now know more about how MRSA spreads. I was first active when my kids were little and they wouldn't let me out of the hospital as they thought I would infect them! Like you said, the only airborne transmission is from someone whose sputum is infected. Just keep the handwashing going and everything will be okay.

I'll be waiting to hear the jubilant shouts when you guys get out of there! Prayers continue.

Kate,

Praying with hope that you and Noah will be home by the end of the week! And though I'm not glad Noah was feeling droopy, I'm thankful that having to stay in the wagon turned out to be a non issue.

Love and blessings,

Jun. 30, 2009 - The Lord has a good plan for Noah!!!

Dear Estes Family,

We are praising God for the wonderful plan He has for each one of you!

Jeremiah 29:11 (Amplified Bible)
11 For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.

Jeremiah 29:11 (New Living Translation)
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

Psalm 91 (New Living Translation)
1 Those who live in the shelter of the Most High
will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 This I declare about the LORD:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;
he is my God, and I trust him.
3 For he will rescue you from every trap
and protect you from deadly disease.
4 He will cover you with his feathers.
He will shelter you with his wings.
His faithful promises are your armor and protection.
5 Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night,
nor the arrow that flies in the day.
6 Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness,
nor the disaster that strikes at midday.
7 Though a thousand fall at your side,
though ten thousand are dying around you,
these evils will not touch you.
8 Just open your eyes,
and see how the wicked are punished.
9 If you make the LORD your refuge,
if you make the Most High your shelter,
10 no evil will conquer you;
no plague will come near your home.
11 For he will order his angels
to protect you wherever you go.
12 They will hold you up with their hands
so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.
13 You will trample upon lions and cobras;
you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!
14 The LORD says, “I will rescue those who love me.
I will protect those who trust in my name.
15 When they call on me, I will answer;
I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honor them.
16 I will reward them with a long life
and give them my salvation.”

Much love,
The Ericksons

Jun. 30, 2009 - MRSA

Posted by Anonymous
My husband (aged 38 - pretty healthy) had a breakout of MRSA on his knee. It started in Nov, was diagnosed in Jan, and it finally cleared up around March - initially it was very painful to him where his clothes rubbed on it. The skin turned black and peeled as it healed (just FYI). He covered it with gauze pads and tape - only to have that blister and make the wound area much bigger!
He ended up going to a wound specialist who had me use un-lined, ordinary gauze and paper tape.
He's all healed up now, but the specialist said that he must take every cut seriously from here on out!
I'm not trying to scare you or anything, just thought you'd like to know what we experienced.
I'm praying for Noah AND you - sleep and healing!! Miraculous healing!!
Blessings!

Wow thats great he's able to get around. Hopefully you'll make it home very soon. On a side note, my DD had MRSA and was hospitalized for it for 4 days when she was 11 mo old. She was on several different meds before they found one that worked, it wasn't until they did surgery to clean out the area, the fluid had gotten underneith some tissue, that they were able to start IV anti-biotics. Unfortunately once her's broke open she was no longer allowed to leave the area and no one was allowed in w/o being completely covered up.
Just thought I'd share our own little MRSA mishaps, I will continue to pray for little Noah and your family, God bless.
