Urgent update

Posted in Noah Updates
I have only a moment and will try to fill in details later.  Noah is in the Greenville Memorial Children's Hospital.  He was admitted to the Abbeville Hospital last night with high, sudden onset fever.  He was also vomiting bile.  He deteriorated rapidly overnight and was transferred here by ambulance this morning.  This came on very suddenly - he had a GREAT day Tuesday.

He is running HIGH (close to 105) fevers in spite of tylenol.  He spent the night vomiting bile, and this morning was set up with a drainage bag attached to his g-tube so his stomach contents would drain instead of making him throw up.  The contents of his upper intestines are backing up into his stomach and draining out of his g-tube.  He has no apparent movement in his intestines.  His liver is very enlarged and his liver enzymes are 10 times higher than his normal numbers.  He is very, very sick.

It's possible that he has an obstruction of some sort, and we just got up from extensive ultrasounds and some x-rays.  He still has a trip to the treatment room ahead of him for a number of things, including lab draws from a vein.

He has been sobbing for a drink on and off all day - pretty much either sobbing or sleeping.  He can't have even ice chips because he is clearly not moving anything downwards and because there is the possibility of emergency surgery if he has an obstruction.  For the same reason, he can't get motrin or a number of other potentially helpful meds that aren't available IV.  He is getting tylenol suppositories but they are only slightly reducing his temp.

I'll try to update or at least tweet when we know more.

Blessings,
Kate

Oh, Kate - our family will be praying. My heart is heavy for you as you "hurry up and wait" for something to be revealed or change, meanwhile watching your precious son suffer. May the Lord give you peace, and give Noah comfort and healing.

Kate,

I'm sorry to hear that Noah is so sick. We will be praying for him. I also wanted to let you know that we always drain bile from Samuel's stomach to a ferrell bag, but when he has large amounts of bile, he is always really thirsty. He says the water makes his stomach feel better. The doctors have thought that it likely thins the bile and makes it drain easier from his tummy. So, if he doesn't have to be NPO for surgery, you may be able to give him some water. It really doesn't matter that it can't go anywhere as long as he's hooked up to drain... it will all just come out that way.

I pray that he is on the mend soon.

Oct. 22, 2009 - praying for Noah

Posted by Janet
I am praying for Noah and your entire family. I ask God to guide the doctors in finding the problem as quickly as possible. Please, Lord, bring Noah's fever down as that alone will make him feel better. I pray his intestines start showing some movement. Lord, if Noah has to have surgery, please surround him and his family in your loving, healing arms. Protect him, give them peace and comfort, and spare Noah from anymore pain. May He continue to bless and keep you in the palm of His hand.

I will be praying for Noah and for him to have a complete turn around....praying for any obstruction to be unblocked and cleared in Jesus's name, his fever to go down and for his liver to go back to it's normal size. Keep believing and trusting, fight the urge to give in to fear. I know how hard it is, trust me.

Love you~Thanks for posting so all the prayer warriors can be interceding for precious Noah right now.

Oct. 22, 2009 - Motrin IV

Posted by Len RN
Motrin is ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is available IV. FDA Approves Caldolor (IV Ibuprofen). You can google it. It is specifically for critical patients with a fever.

Quote:
Clinical trials have shown Caldolor to be safe and effective in reducing both pain and fever in 1,400 hospitalized patients. In Phase III studies, patients who were given Caldolor reported a significant reduction in post-surgical pain intensity within the first 24 hours while also significantly reducing their morphine use. Clinical trials including critically ill and non-critically ill patients with fever showed a significant reduction in temperature as compared with those who received a placebo. No serious adverse events were directly attributed to Caldolor in any of these clinical studies.

Some things as liver impairment or age might have a bearing.

Cheers and God Bless

Oct. 22, 2009 - Ibuprofen in a Gel

Posted by Anonymous
You may already know this, but you can have Ibuprofen compounded into a gel that can be rubbed on the skin. It truly does work. It does take a rx from the doctor, and it is usually not covered by insurance. When I have gotten it, 30 doses was about $30.00.

Kate,

Please call and let me know if I can help you specifically. If I don't hear from you I will plan to come up on Sunday. I love you guys and I am thinking about you and praying with every thought.

"Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him." James 1:12

This verse has really been on my heart this week I wanted to share it with you.

Love to you, Noah, and all at home,

I'm praying for Noah and for you, Kate! Big hugs your way! I know it's got to be so hard to have him sobbing for something as simple as water, yet you can neither meet that need nor help him understand why. May the Lord be extra close to you during this time!

I was NPO for several weeks once and I was absolutely MISERABLE. TPN does nothing for the thirsty feeling. What helped a bit were these lemon-flavored swaps that helped with keeping my mouth moist. The NG tube I had sucked right back out any tiny droplets that did go down. This caused no problem when I did have to go to the OR on emergency.

Ask if he can have moist swabs. A hysterical child who is dead-miserable because his mouth is dry is worse off than a child allowed a swab now and then. His energy needs to go to healing rather than being upset and wearing himself out crying. The lesser of two evils is a mouth swab.

Noah will be in my thoughts.

Am asking the Father for a quick resolution of Noah's condition and for the blessing of good health thereafter. Asking for continuation of the peace that passes understanding for you. Somehow sure you're already experiencing it. Praising God for His promised ear and sure answer - as sure as that He sent His Son Jesus for our salvation. What else would He withhold?!

Love to you and your precious family. Marlene
