Turning the corner

Posted in Noah Updates
Noah seems to be turning the corner!!  Yesterday evening he truly woke up for the first time in almost 24 hours.  He only spoke a little (he did tell me "hi") but was able to lie in bed and look at a DVD!

His fever curve is lower and his labs are all the same or a little better.  He has had some awake and alert periods today and has spoken a little more.  This is such a huge improvement and I think we are all very relieved and happy to see these signs of progress.

He is still sick and we still don't know what is wrong, but apparently it is getting better.  We still don't have the results of the H1N1 swab, and H1N1 complications could explain everything we have seen.  He's had two negative flu swabs that weren't the very specific H1N1 swab, but the regular flu swabs give false negatives almost half of the time.   The specific swabs have to be sent to a government lab and we don't know how long it will take to get the results.  If he has H1N1 it won't change anything but it will provide a "tidy answer" as our infectious disease doctor said.

Noah is still having a really hard time being moved.  If we try to adjust his position at all he gets very stiff and flails around trying to grab tightly to anything he can hold.  He often says that he is going to fall or that he is falling, even if we are just rolling him on his side in bed.  I'm really not sure what to make of that but I figure we can really address it later if it persists after he is feeling better.  In the meantime, he isn't up for anything more than lying still in bed.  He is having some heaving and retching and sometimes says he is choking if he is too flat for too long.  He also had some bleeding from his nose yesterday and early this morning, and the GI doctor said there could be some bleeding from his stomach yesterday, but the bleeding has been pretty minor and should resolve with the plasma on board and his numbers starting to look better.

None of those concerns are really huge in comparison to the relief I feel over his improvements.  Last night after Noah really woke up, the Lord gave me a sense of peace and confidence that his labs would look better today and I was able to rest without sorrow or deep worry.  I know that Noah must feel very relieved and so much more comfortable without the ultra-high fevers!

I'll update when I can.  Noah is having some odd anxieties (decided he is scared of my water mug, for example) and has wanted me to hold his hand most of the day.  I have been MORE than happy to oblige and wasn't willing to blog until he was resting and able to let go of my hand.

Please join us in rejoicing and giving thanks for these improvements and please continue to join us in prayer for all of the healing that is still so very needed.

Blessings,
Kate

Kate,
Praying for Noah to continue to recover and for the Lord's mighty protective hand on him. Praying that the enemy of fear would not be allowed to overwhelm his little mind and that he would stop feeling so "dizzy" and "unstable." To this I can relate when I was in elementary and had the Russian Flu. I hallucinated and was extremely dizzy. The feeling of being unstable and falling was very real during the feverish times. I will also pray continued peace and confidence for you, Jeff and the kids.

so so so thankful!!! Praise God for such an improvement. I have been refreshing your site probably hourly since your last post.

My family all had the H1N1, and nearly all of my kids reported feeling dizzy. One of them also had problems with reality, even when his fever wasn't so high.

Continuing to pray that God will continue his watch-care over all of you and will give the doctors wisdom and skill in handling Noah.

I've been looking for an update and praying it would be a good one. Praise the Lord that it is!! Continuing to pray for little Enigma Man!

The odd anxieties could be a result of very real dreams he had during the high fever, you think? Maybe even hallucinations..... My sister had this.

With him feeling like he is falling, it makes me think he may have pressure on his Eustachian tubes. Could it be a bad ear infection? (kind of trouble my kids would have) Just an idea, you probably already checked that....

A thought occurs: as soon as I read that he felt like he was falling whenever he's moved I thought "Oh! Maybe he has an inner ear infection". I've had this experience and it's SO not fun. My Dad throws up almost uncontrollably when he has one. if I remember correctly, it doesn't show up when you look in the ears but you have elevated something or other which shows an infection.

All that may be totally old news to you and you've checked it already. =D Noah certainly has way more complications than our family does when we have inner ear infections. =Þ

We are so so so relieved to hear that he appears to be turning the corner and that he said Hi to you and was able to watch a video. We are so thankful for God's tender mercies. We pray he will be with you and that Noah will continue to recover. Although I've missed hearing from you, it's been SOOO fabulous to check your website every day and see no new post. =) No news is good news.. =)

Gentle hugs and kisses to Noah.

Oh Kate! What an enormous relief it must be to see the evidences of a halt in the downward spiral! We give PRAISE to the Father of such mercies! And, we continue to pray.
A couple (sort of unrelated) things:

1. I've tried to 'cc' & 'reply' to email updates I've received and sent out. But the ones I send to you all are sent back as 'undeliverable'. Please know that I am NOT asking you to fix the issue, just alerting you of it. Just want you to know that the Lord is 'widening the net' of prayer through forwards of your 'update alerts' (though you are not getting copies of the prayer appeals).

2. I just read in my Arthritis Today magazine (pg. 85) of 'a new deice that makes shots easier' on children (& adults). It is "called 'Buzzy' ~ a vibrating, bee-shaped gadget with ice packs for wings. It is placed on the patient's skin, then moved slightly away from the injection site just before the shot is given. the cold and vibration confuse the body's nerves, distracting attention away from the poke of the needle."

It is not cheap ($34 from WWW.buzzy4shots.com), but I thought perhaps maybe someone could 'gift' one to sweet Noah? (hint, dear readers?!) :)

grateful for your sustained faith & His gifts, HveHope

(even if we don't know it - Amen?). This time I am immensely relieved it was as we had prayed - for a speedy turn-around for the better. Praise God for this one!

Sounds like the fever/illness has affected the vestibular system (sense of balance), thus the feeling of falling. Also a possible encephalopathy or just the high fever/hospital stresses affecting brain function, thus anxiety in general, so the reaction to mug?? Anyhow, my silly long-distance, armchair white-coat impersonation. LOL.

Sending long distance hugz too (((((((()))))))))

Oct. 24, 2009 - Sweet Noah's improvement!

Dearest Kate,

Praise be to Jesus to get on the internet and read that Noah had improved this morning. I lifted up his name all night. In fact, I had quite a talk to Jesus about your precious boy. I still believe in healing in the name of Jesus. And I asked that he touch your Noah and help him get better. I told him I knew that you would give him the glory no matter what.

I know I don't really know you but, unless your just a good writer faking what you really believe, that I feel your immense love for God though your writing.

I wish I could be there for you, and pray with you and pray over Noah. But take comfort in this. I truly pray for your Noah and for you and your family. God is everywhere. So that means he's with you and with me when we pray for Noah and hear's us both.

When you hold Noah's hand tonight. Give him a gentle squeeze of love from me. I never thought a family and child over the internet would capture my heart like yours has.

Sending prayers and love your way,
Michelle H.

Oh, Kate - so glad to hear that Noah is doing better & you were able to have peace & rest last night! Praying that all continues.
My 11yo who has been praying regularly for Noah said that he also felt very dizzy when he was sick (apparently also the flu). He is excited to be identifying with Noah - such silly boys! But it will help him to pray with compassion, so it's a good thing.

Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side,
the Man of God’s own choosing:
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts, and stablish you in every good word and work.

Kate,
Praise the Lord for the improvements you've seen in Noah last night and today. May our Heavenly Father continue to heal Noah.
Just a thought, Kate, on Noah's feeling like he's falling: could it be that he's very dizzy? Sometimes I get really dizzy (especially when there's a weather change) and that leaves me with the feeling that I'm falling, falling , falling... but if I can be very still I might feel a little better, but then if I move at all (even to roll over or to turn my head), it all starts over again. This may not be Noah's case at all, but just a thought. May the Lord grant you all wisdom in figuring it out; meanwhile we'll continue to pray for Noah.

Joining you in praising God. Since you've posted the urgent requests Noah and your family have not been far from my mind. Thanking God that he has improved and that God gave you peace last night that things would improve. What an awesome God we serve. May Noah continue to improve and the rest of you stay healthy if it was THE FLU! I'm not one to typically get the flu vaccines or any vaccines for our family. I will have to say I'm praying about wisdom and we're considering it this year. We've had the flu go through our family the last 2 years. The shots are cheaper than tamiflu. :-) Praying you all have a restful and uneventful night.

Dear Kate,

I'm looking at Noah's improvement as the withered roots of what has been making him sick, whatEVER it's called, and am expecting to see the rest of that particular tree wither as well. So yes, I'm definitely rejoicing with you, and giving thanks to our faithful God.

Just a thought, but could Noah's strange reactions to movement and some objects be the result of dehydration, if he has not been allowed to quench his thirst? Sounds like the typical mental aberrations that usually accompany that. But hey, I'm not a doctor.

Blessings on you, your husband and your quiverfull, & especially Noah, and our God. Love,

Thank G-d Noah is improving. The sudden onset and extremely serious nature of this must be very scary for you. I've read a lot of his previous history and hospitalizations, so I know if this is the worst one yet it's very, very bad. I've just said Tehillim [Psalms] in Noah's merit that he may have a complete and speedy recovery.

I know there was a study done in Japan recently where they were trying to determine if either the flu itself or Tamiflu caused some strange mental stuff including deliriums and strange actions.
