A Little Community Service....

As they say, a little community service goes along way.

Here in Hawaii it is very common that churches meet in schools, actually most churches do meet in the schools here - elementary, high school and even at the community colleges.  YES, churches actually meet inside the public school buildings on weekends.  It's quite a shock for some people to find that out.  Land is at a premium out here and if a church was able to find some land to purchase more than likely the price would be too high...we are talking millions for a shoebox piece of land.

The schools actually work well with the churches out here.  It's kind of a you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours kind of thing.

Today we, a few of the homeschool families in our church, went and hid some easter eggs for their hunts later this afternoon at the school where we meet.   It was very interesting going in during their school hours doing last minute counting of eggs and having the children hid them.  We hid over 1500 eggs today for all the classes PreK thru 5th grade.   All the teachers were very nice and very appreciative that we would actually take the time to do that for them.

We were even able to start our service off with a circle of prayer right in front of the school ON the school grounds!   No one cares!  That's the Aloha Spirit....and the HOLY Spirit working together in this little place I call Paradise...

Aloha!

Thanks for commenting on Math-U-See on my blog! It's reassuring to hear from someone who is further along in the curriculum.

I mean, I love MUS, and the way it makes math so do-able. Easy, almost. Too easy? I get worried, seeing my girls working through their lessons without a lot of grief. But maybe I should be relieved instead!

It was interesting to read about the cooperation of schools and churches in your community.

I spent six weeks in Hawaii, years ago. What a beautiful place!

I remember not seeing many churches when we were inHawaii. I guess because thetare at the schools?

Sounds kinda neat, actually.

ryn-- we don't have required testing. And why would I report than on a blog? tests are boring. I'd rather write about a science experiment we did...LOL

This is great to here. We actually met in a church for a year while we were building a new Sanctuary. I think it totally makes sense to use the bog ole empty building on the weekends. I love that you are doing service projects for the school. What a witness!

what a wonderful thing for the homeschool families to have done! what a blessing that was to the school, for them not to have to figure out the logistics of getting their own staff out there and hiding the eggs.

indeed, when we moved here to Oahu, we thought it was odd the churches using school facilities for services. but two+ years later, it is the norm. i think it is a fabulous idea and wish schools/churches in the CONUS would partake of this partnership.

have a blessed easter weekend!
