Christians Who Unschool... Learning in a Town Near YOU

What About Socialization!?!
So, there's a nearby Walmart that we frequent.
While there during the Christmas season, my then 2 year old noticed a big snowman display and started a conversation about it with a guy who worked there.
My then 7 year old and I stood there as they conversed and suddenly the guy looked at my older daughter and asked if she was playing hooky. She looked at him puzzled and replied no. I told her what it meant and she told him she's homeschooled. Then they began to converse. He asked about the languages she was learning and told her the languages he speaks. Then he offered to teach her Mandarin Chinese one phrase at a time each time she saw him in the store. After the wonderful conversation he'd just had with both my girls, this poor wonderful soul looked at me and said, "It's really great that you're homeschooling them, but what about their socialization?"
Did he just miss the whole last 10 minutes or what!?!

Hi Patrice! I stumbled upon your blog when reading another random blog. Anyway, your entries are very refreshing. I have found myself thinking some of the same things you have writtten....Like why people hs just to do the same school as real school at home. I have never called myself an unschooler, I've thought myself as a relaxed hser. But this morning after beginning to pull my hair out this year, I sat down with my son and asked him what he would like to learn this year. I told him it was important to me to have his complete input on his schooling. He came up with a few different things that were great! Anyway, I will be adding you to my friends. I may need to read about your life just to refresh me. Be blessed, Mitzi

hi, you sound like an interesting person. i'm going to add you as a contact. i'm with you about the whole socialization thing and school. after living in the balkans we came back and dd did public school 1st grade. everyday her carefully made lunch would come back almost untouched. i asked why and she said because lunch (all 12 minutes of it) was the only time she was free to talk. even then the kids were divided up boy-girl-boy-girl so they wouldn't talk as much. there was a short recess, but really, that was her almost daily comment about school. she couldn't talk to anyone!
i'm moving a lot more toward unschooling. i was much more structured, but 10yo dd, very bright, felt like a daily failure because she did everything in her timing, her way, not MY WAY. i had to "give up" much of the control. i realize i still have a lot to learn! blessings, mary

I guess people who make comments about "socialization" need to clarify what they MEAN by socialization.
LOL!
