// - I have homeschooled for sixteen years. Our oldest recently graduated from college, another is a sophomore in college & our youngest is in 7th grade. I would like to offer encouragement to those who are just beginning to homeschool, as well as those whose children are considering college. It takes commitment to remain in homeschooling for the long haul. I would also like others to know that their homeschooled children can succeed in college and in their personal and professional lives.
Memories in the School Cabinet

It is always good for me to sort through old homeschool materials as I did recently. I showed our now married daughter some of the reports she had written & we agreed that for age 8 or 10 or 12, they were actually pretty good. I think she really enjoyed seeing them again! Many things I discovered sparked a particular memory & maybe a worthwhile tip or two to pass along.
I liked trying to think up things I could have the kids do that wouldn't seem like school to them. Isn't that sneaky? Once such project involved writing out sentences leaving space between each word in the sentence. I would then cut out each word in the sentence & stick them in a bag or envelope. My student then had to pick one word at a time out of the envelope like putting to gether a puzzle & arrange the words in the sentence in the proper order. Sometimes I would choose sentences from a history text or biography & sometimes it may be a Scripture verse. The result was effective. They would receive a benefit from learning some interesting new history information and of course, anytime Scirpture is implanted in their minds, the benefits are most valuable! There was also the grammatical benefit of learning proper word and or punctuation placement & it was also easy to clearly see where the adjectives or adverbs were. There were even times when they could rearrange the sentence & see how the meaning may change. All in all it was an enjoyable little project which actually resulted in some learning! God bless all of you moms and may He grant you strength for today!

We keep notebooks with samples. Spelling tests, copywork, letters, artwork...you can find a little of everything in a year's notebook. I think it's going to be fun to go and look at them again when they are older and even when they have their own children. :)

As my boys are growing, each day seems to go faster. I get a little selfish and want them to stop growing. Reading your post about looking through old school stuff, reminded me that my boys did that this last week. they had alot of laughs already and they are only 12 and 13 :}
I am sure that you will post many helpful tips. I look forward to those.
I wish I was that organized!

The nice thing about the Navy...we keep moving...so I keep finding things! Thanks for your wonderful post...I try to post mind ticklers and funny things...just keep me away from politics...I can get a little crazy! Stop by anytime...icart

What a great idea! Think I'll try it with my guys.
I was excited to read about your daughter relocating to Texas. Our little Greyson was taking violin lessons before we moved and we haven't found a teacher for him yet. Unfortunately, Austin is about 2 1/2 hours from us. I pray she and her dh are able to continue to use their gifts and minister in their new home.
Blessings,
Angela

Thanks for your comment on my blog. Yes, we do have much in common. We also share "sneaky" teaching methods.
One of my fondest memories of teaching the American Revolution was a creative method of explaining the Stamp Act. One morning my kids woke up to a stack of play money and they were required to pay a tax to use the toilet, walk across the floor, drink the water, etc. etc. It was a lesson they never forgot.
Nice to "meet" you.

Nope! None married at this point. My oldest is 21, then 19, 18, 17, 11, 10 and 6. I do find comfort in knowing school does come to an end and that learning does not stop with mom. Our lives have not changed to much since their all still at home. I dread the day they start leaving although I know its not to far away. I’m thankful for each day we have. How old are your children?
