// - I have homeschooled for sixteen years. Our oldest recently graduated from college, another is a sophomore in college & our youngest is in 7th grade. I would like to offer encouragement to those who are just beginning to homeschool, as well as those whose children are considering college. It takes commitment to remain in homeschooling for the long haul. I would also like others to know that their homeschooled children can succeed in college and in their personal and professional lives.
A Simple Math Idea :)
Posted on Aug. 21, 2007
For those of you who may be studying place value, which is all of us at some point, here is a very simple idea that helps to cement the concept of place value for our students.
You simply take some poster board or cardstock paper & cut out some rectangles of whatever size you like. Write the numerals 0-9, one number on each rectangle or square. You will want to have several zeroes, several one's, two's, etc..... Oftentimes, children may have difficulty writing a number such as one hundred, twenty-three million, four thousand, six. The confusion can come when there is a zero in a particular place value. I dictate a number & my son must arrange the numbers correctly. It helps so much to have this visual aid. To add to the fun, we sit on the floor & do this & he sets his timer for 15 or 20 seconds & we try to beat the clock. It is also great for your memory--I need help here!!--as you have to remember the number. We have the squares scattered on the floor so you also have to hunt a bit for the correct number. In just three days of this "game," any confusion that existed is gone. Plus, it was fun & a nice break from the books. Guess you call that " L-E-A-R-N-I-N-G."
» End = A Simple Math Idea :)

ahhh! Learning does take different paths - not all in textbooks.
You asked if I lived in the Tulsa area, Yes. I live west of Tulsa on Keystone Lake.
We have not started school yet. The funny thing about that is when school starts I will have so much more to blog about, but less time to do it. We'll see.

I can hardly wait to start school next week. My children are begging to start with all the new books. What a sad problem. LOL

Wow! What a great idea! I hope that I remember it when my children are ready for those big numbers. Abby's only to a place where she has to understand the difference between say 7 and 17. She was having a hard time with this so I got some flashcards and put a pencil in the middle of the tens place and the ones place on 17 and did a 10 rod on the tens side of the pencil and seven 1 cubes on the other. Then I had her count the cubes all together. I think it helped.

That is a great idea! My daughter just missed one of those "0" in the place value problems today. I will try this with her. Thanks!

I just happened by your blog and I have really enjoyed reading it and I love your title. I have one daughter who will be in 10th grade this year. I am very much aware that my chance to teach is nearing an end. I would like to make you my friend...you have quite a bit of wisdom to share.
God bless
