Feb. 20, 2009 - The CPSIA Meets Dr. Seuss
This poem was written by Heather Idoni and Jodi Whisler. I thought it was very good and very fitting.

One good thing that has come out of this is that some creative moms are getting to shine!

Feb. 19, 2009 - Family Read-aloud Comes Full Circle
I have always been the one to read aloud to our family. I enjoy it. I've read many, many great books to my oldest kids. They have enjoyed it, too. The first chapter book I can remember reading to Shawn was Tarzan of the Apes. A friend had told me it was a really good story. I was kind of skeptical. But I realized how important it is to read aloud to kids to model the enjoyment of reading to them, and I wanted Shawn to want to read. He didn't want to learn that or anything else for the most part. He pretty much wanted to play video games all the time. So I checked out Tarzan of the Apes at the library and started reading it to him. He loved it! He did his other school work more readily when he knew I would read Tarzan to him after he finished. He said that he could really picture what Tarzan looked like as I read the story to him. He was amazed at the power of the words and the story to draw him in and make him want to know what was going to happen next. After that he wanted to learn how to read, because he knew it was fun and enjoyable - as good as video games!
Now he is a very well-read, extremely intelligent young man who knows lots of stuff I don't know because he's read everything he could get his hands on. Not only that, he learns things so thoroughly that he remembers them forever.
He has learned a lot from science books and Usborne books and historical fiction, but he also learns from audio books about Sherlock Holmes, The Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and other classics.
He has turned on many audio books to listen to and we've all ended up listening along with him. Homeschool Radio Shows has had many audios that we've enjoyed listening to together. Audios by Jim Hodges have been very inspirational and informative, especially his readings of G. A. Henty's books. Then Shawn found Project Gutenberg. He went crazy finding every story there that sounded interesting and listening to them. Many of us listened in to at least parts of many of these stories. Gary gets so involved in the stories, he acts them out - especially the fight scenes!
Well, Shawn found Tarzan of the Apes on Project Gutenberg. He listened to the story, and we listened along with him. It brought back to my memory how that story inspired him to want to learn to read. After we finished Tarzan of the Apes, the first book of the series, I remembered that there were more books in the series by Edgar Rice Burroughs. He tried to find audios, but couldn't. I suggested getting the books from the library. I found several titles in the library and brought them home. Now, Shawn is reading aloud The Return of Tarzan to the rest of us. I can listen and peel apples or potatoes or sew something or hold a baby without balancing a book in the other hand and trying to read aloud to everybody while nursing, etc. I can just sit and listen to my boy read to the family. Isn't that wonderful? I think it's a blessing. I'm very thankful for the family I have and for the way we are as a family. God has made us this way in answer to my prayers. He has caused us to be a close family that enjoys each other and enjoys learning together.
I still enjoy reading aloud and that is the main part of our "together school". But it's nice to have another reader in the family so I can just sit back and listen sometimes. I never would have thought it would be Shawn, the one who never wanted to learn to read. I guess I should praise the Lord for Tarzan, but is that kosher? Maybe it would be better to praise the Lord for the inspiration He gave me to read that book to Shawn. That was the start of big things for Shawn and for much more enjoyable school times for both of us.
The whole concept of reading aloud became my main mode of teaching school after that. Reading aloud is one of the most bonding things we do together as a family. We repeat lines that are funny or memorable in some way as they come to mind during the day. We discuss things that happened in the story as we consider people and events and eras and countries different from our own. We learn about history and discuss what has happened when certain courses and philosophies were followed and what has worked well and what hasn't. We have explored the causes of wars. We have learned about what influenced the rise of certain ancient civilizations and then what led to their fall. We have read Biblical fiction and understand the culture and customs of the land of the Bible better than we did before. My kids are learning so much in a painless - dare I say - fun way? They learn so much more than facts. They learn about life, relationships, cultures, and how much fun it is to learn (and to read!
)
Yes, I heartily endorse Family Read-aloud time. If you don't like to read aloud, maybe your husband would like to or maybe one of your kids. You never know until you ask!

Feb. 19, 2009 - Australia, Here We Come! (I wish)
|
I got this in an email from my friend, Shari. Australia, here we come!
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd-Australia Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told on Wednesday to get out of Australia, as the government targeted radicals in a bid to head off potential terror attacks.. Separately, Rudd angered some Australian Muslims on Wednesday by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. Quote: 'IMMIGRANTS, NOT AUSTRALIANS, MUST ADAPT. Take It Or Leave It. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Australians. '
'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom' 'We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society. Learn the language!' 'Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian, right wing, political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.' 'We will accept your beliefs, and will not question why. All we ask is that you accept ours, and live in harmony and peaceful enjoyment with us.' 'This is OUR COUNTRY, OUR LAND, and OUR LIFESTYLE, and we will allow you every opportunity to enjoy all this. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about Our Flag, Our Pledge, Our Christian beliefs, or Our Way of Life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great Australian freedom, 'THE RIGHT TO LEAVE'.' 'If you aren't happy here then LEAVE. We didn't force you to come here. You asked to be here. So accept the country YOU accepted.' |

Jan. 25, 2009 - Practicing True Religion
James 1:27
“Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”
After going through all that we went through, my family and I are not afraid of what's coming or worried about the economic trouble that's happening right now. We saw God provide for us in miraculous ways. We were at His mercy and He lifted us up out of the miry clay. He has set us up on the Solid Rock, and we know that It is firm. But we also know that He expects us to give and help those in need. He used others who had money, possessions and homes to give to us who had none. So now, we're on the other side. We have plenty to take care of ourselves. We are extremely aware that everything we have comes from the hand of our Heavenly Father. We are careful to ask Him what He wants us to do with every penny He gives us.
Our heart for giving has grown until it feels like a need, instead of a desire, and a delight, instead of a duty.
Here is one opportunity that the Lord has presented to me to give to those who are in situations similar to the one we were in. These families are at God's mercy. They are obeying God in staying home and training and discipling their children, but they have no income to support them. For one reason or another, these women have all become single mothers and now they have to trust God completely to meet their financial needs. I know how God works in these situations. He did it for us for 4+ years. He uses the Body to take care of people who trust Him for their provision. Living by faith is not easy, nor is it fun, but sometimes it's what God requires of us. Through it, we can grow so close to God and our faith can be strengthened in a way that few other things can accomplish. God knows what He's doing in these families' lives, and the commitment of these mothers to stay home with their children and train them, teach them, disciple and nurture them is admirable. It is absolutely counter-cultural, and some would judge them harshly. But I understand where they're coming from. God demanded the same from me and my husband. And we are all better for it and our attitudes toward money and God's ways have come into better alignment with the truth.
An arm of the Body that is reaching out to these families is a group called Gleaning the Harvest.
It is a ministry run by a Christian family that has a heart to help single homeschool moms to be able to stay home with their children and do the ministry that God has called them to. They don't get anything out of this for themselves except the joy that comes from serving God and His people.
I am privileged to support them in this ministry, and to support one of the families that God laid on my heart.

I honor the obedience and faith that Vicki has demonstrated through quitting her job and through seeking God about the best way to homeschool her children, basically giving God the reins in her homeschooling.
I am asking the rest of the Body to take this need to the Lord and ask if He would have you do anything to enable these mothers to fulfill this high calling that the Lord has placed on their lives.
Thank you and God bless you,
Penney

Jan. 20, 2009 - I'm Dumpster-Diving!
Say hey, who in the world is C.P.S.I.A.?
They're causing National Bankruptcy Day!
On February 10 they're gonna do in
My favorite local thrift store - and more!
Like sweet Cousin Faye, who markets EBay.
They'll all have to test every shirt and dress
and toys for all girls and boys, no less!
Whoever heard of a book made of lead, anyway?
Why not check the big sources instead? Start today!
2-10-0h-9 is lookin' mighty fine, to a bibliophile like me.
When questioned on the street by anyone I meet
I'll falsely proclaim, "It's part of my faith, and I can!"
and haul off another load in my Minivan!
For selling 1 book you could do some time!
It's not lead-free? Who gives a thin dime?
On February 10, I'll be deep in the bin
Yep, no jivin' I'm going dumpster divin'
The law is tricky and clear as wet dirt
Poor Ma and Pa are gonna be hurt
Who cares anyway how they're survivin'
Friend, in the end, I'll be dumpster divin'!
Don't give me those looks,
You know you want black market books!
So the morning of 2-ONE-Oh better hope you know
Come rain or snow they'll be tons of contriving
by homeschool moms going dumpster diving!
Forget: Recycle - Reduce - Reuse
Make way for the ruse! You no longer choose
the books you want your children to use.
Another freedom we lose? Confused?
It's not lead-free? Don't matter to me, 'cuz I'm conniving.
On February tenth I'm going dumpster-diving...

Jan. 19, 2009 - Someone's Putting Pressure on the Consumer Product Safety Committee
I got this link to a letter that 4 congressmen sent to the committee urging them to hurry up and make this law more clear and to make exceptions for books.
UPDATE 1/17/2009 -- Congress Makes an Attempt to Save Books from
Destruction
Chairmen Henry A. Waxman and Bobby L. Rush, together with Senator
John D. Rockefeller, incoming chairman of the Senate Commerce,
Science and Transportation Committee, and Senator Mark L. Pryor,
sent a letter to the Consumer Product Safety Commission expressing
concerns about implementation of the Consumer Product Safety
Improvement Act of 2008. The letter highlighted four issues of
particular concern and urged the Commission to take swift action
to address critical issues of implementation. They ask for the
exclusion of children's books from testing and also reiterate that
NOTHING has changed to protect libraries and resellers from undue
hardship in complying and destruction of books and other inventory,
including clothing. They ask for an exemption for 'ordinary' books
and clothing that is made strictly of fabric. Read the complete
letter here: http://familyclassroom.net/Congress.pdf

Jan. 13, 2009 - The CPSIA is Already Affecting Homeschool Businesses
I've had several emails today from homeschool businesses that are trying to get rid of all of their children's products they currently have on hand before Feb. 10th. Hands and Hearts have wonderful History kits that they won't be able to produce any more because the manufacturers of many of the parts of them will be discontinuing production of these products. Homeschool Radio Shows is selling out the CD's they have on hand. They say they are having to liquidate them or put them in a landfill. I already wrote about Hands of a Child in the previous post.
This is really scary to all of us who have come to depend on these resources for our curriculum. They are excellent resources and we need to protect them from this bad law.
Please scroll down to the post about Children's Books becoming Contraband and find out how you can make your voice heard on this matter.

Jan. 13, 2009 - Huge Discounts at Hands of a Child
In the Hands of a Child is a great site for unit study and lapbook resources. They have kits that have the folder, graphic organizers and craft items included. Because of the CPSIA that I talked about in the last post, they are trying to empty their shelves of as many paper products as they can before Feb. 10. We can benefit from this right now by these discounts, but we know that if they really have to discontinue making these products, it will be a terrible loss for many homeschoolers. Please keep praying and doing what you can to change that law!
The details are at Handsofachild.com
They are selling the kits at a 35% discount. This is a great way to get some lapbooks all ready to go at a great price.

The Sale of Children's Books to be Banned
---
Oh, how I wish this were a joke! But it is a grim and looming,
almost Orwellian, reality.
Effective February 10th, in the United States, the sale of
all children's books (books intended for children ages 12 and
under) is to be PROHIBITED. Every single book printed prior
to the ruling is affected, whether new or used. New books in
production are required to include a "lead-free" certification
and will be the only books that are legal to offer for sale.
What does this mean to the homeschooling family?
Well, for one, curriculum fairs across the country will be
cancelled as book vendors scramble to figure out how to comply
with the new ruling. Complete book inventories will have to be
destroyed -- the ruling even prohibits giving away the books!
Local thrift stores will be hard hit -- most will likely have to
close their doors -- yes, even Goodwill and Salvation Army.
Clothing, toys and books -- even CDs and DVDs are included in the
ruling. Thrift stores will no longer be able to accept or process
anything (including clothing) that would be intended for a child.
No more library sales. Libraries will not be permitted to give
away or sell book donations. It is unsure yet, however, how
the libraries' shelves themselves will be impacted (the ruling
doesn't explicitly mention "loaning" books, just selling or
giving them away). The key word, however, is "distribution" --
libraries may well be required to destroy books from their shelves.
(The ruling that originally passed was about toys, but the EPA has
since made a statement that clothing, books and media are included
in "children's toys".)
Just how serious is this new law?
Amazon.com has already notified all vendors of their need to comply.
No book can be sold at the Amazon site that was printed prior to
compliance. And the "compliance" must be coordinated at the manu-
facturing stage. At the time of this article there is no clause
to be able to grandfather- in older books or even rare out-of-print
books. It can cost between $500 and $1500 to test a book for lead.
I happen to own a children's bookstore specializing in living books
from the 1950s and '60s. My punishment for selling a book after
February 10th? Up to $100,000 and 5 years in jail. And yes, it is
a felony charge. For selling a SINGLE book.
(Although I don't think the S.W.A.T. team scenario would become a
reality overnight, at the same time I would be leery of blatantly
violating Federal law.)
So what can you do to help save your local used bookstore that
sells children's books? Or that homeschool curriculum business?
Or your EBay business selling children's items?

Dec. 14, 2008 - The Gingerbread Men Return
We got some post cards from Gingerbread Men in different places. We got one from Sweden, one from Vancouver, Canada and 2 from Texas. I bought the mark-on map from Sonlight so we could mark the places our Gingerbread Men were sighted. It's really neat. It folds up now, so you don't have to keep it on the wall. I keep losing it, though!
A LOT of Gingerbread Men were sighted in Ohio. I guess they went back to our roots!
Then I got a Christmas card from a college friend of mine in Ohio, and she told a story of her kids seeing little footprints in the snow with gingerbread crumbs around them. I read it to my twins, and then I said, "Do you want to see the Gingerbread Men now?" They looked kind of confused, but they wanted to see them. I had them follow me to the garage. I got the pan down from the refrigerator. I told them to take off the lid. Fiona asked why they weren't moving. She had fun pretending. I told them the whole story about taking them out of the oven and hiding them. They asked why and I told them I did it just for fun, so we could have fun pretending together. They didn't say much, but I left it up to them if they wanted to keep pretending or just live in the "real world". They wanted to eat them... so I guess "real world" won!
I wanted them to know fantasy from reality. I also wanted them to know that I will always be honest with them.
Kelsey wanted to decorate them... and then eat them. So they did. We got some final photos of our Runaway Gingerbread Men.

Here's how the twins decorated their gingerbread men.

All of the gingerbread men played together one last time.

Then we ate them!

Now you see him...

Now you don't!

Fiona's new ornament this year is 3 gingerbread men.

The best big brother in the world!

Dec. 3, 2008 - I Hope Somebody Comes to Visit My Blog Today - of ALL Days
I have met a famous person on Twitter. She's famous among some homeschoolers. She's a well-known author and speaker and a very good mother to her 8 children. Due to tragic circumstances, she is now a single mom raising 7 children alone. Her oldest daughter is married and out on her own, but Terri has the responsibility of providing for herself and 7 children every day. You know what that means: rent, food, clothes, school materials, food, toiletries, and, did I mention FOOD for 8 people every day. I know how much money that takes. And she has been making money as a realtor since she became single. You know how the real estate market is right now. She is really struggling to make ends meet. In fact, the ends are not meeting right now. She is behind on her bills.
Her name is Terri Camp. I don't know how many new homeschoolers know her, but in my generation she was well-known and sought-after at home school conferences. She has been understandably absent from the conference circuit during the last couple of years, but she is still homeschooling her children, from what I understand. She is an amazing writer, and I love her philosophy of education. Her website is called Ignite the Fire. She subscribes to the philosophy that education is not the filling of a bucket, but the igniting of a fire. Meaning: We shouldn't try to fill our chldren's minds with knowledge but inspire in them a love of learning.
She has been doing all she knows to do to try to make more money to pay her living expenses. She is very good at everything she puts her hand to. She was very good at selling real estate when real estate was selling. She was the top agent from the time she started. She is an excellent person. I know her from reading her book, Ignite the Fire and from reading her blog.
I am calling for the Body of Christ to rally around Terri at this difficult time in her life and help her make it through this month, at least. I know how it feels to have people clamoring for money and not having any money to give them. It's not a good feeling! Not to mention, Christmas is coming. Her children aren't expecting anything. But I know that God wants to bless them. He has laid this burden on my heart. I see this need, and I'm doing what I can to help her. Would you please help her, too? She is virtually a widow and her children are orphans, and you know what James says about true religion. James 1:27
You can check out her blog at terricamp.com. You'll get a sample of her wonderful writing there.
Please prayerfully consider helping Terri at this time. She has a paypal account under terri@terricamp.com. She would be so grateful, and I know that God would be very pleased.
Love,
Penney

Dec. 2, 2008 - Oh Yeah, I Forgot What We Did!
Since Thanksgving Day was Katie's birthday, we celebrated her birthday that day and had our Thanksgiving Feast on Friday. I made a Hot Fudge Chocolate Pudding Cake - YUM! We let Katie pick a family movie for us to watch. She picked Facing the Giants, much to my delight.

You see, I've been trying to get Gary to watch that movie for about a year now. He just wouldn't sit down to do it. He wasn't very delighted. I don't know what he thought it was going to be like, but he just was not enthusiastic about it at all. Apparently, my recommendation doesn't mean much to him. We do have very different tastes in movies and music and lots of other things.... Anywho... we all watched the movie together. We really got into it. I was yelling at the football players to run and to tackle that other team's player who was carrying the ball. I felt like I was at a real high school football game. High school football games are the best, aren't they?
And the story line is just so heartwarming. I knew Gary would be able to relate to the main character in a big way. I was right. He liked it a lot. He didn't get too effusive in his praise, probably because that would be admitting that I was right, but I could tell he really enjoyed it. Even the little kids stayed with us the whole time even though they didn't understand a lot of what was happening. We had a really nice time together as a family. Then we went upstairs and had delicious Hot Fudge Pudding Cake from my Hershey cookbook.
