Youtube to the Rescue!!

I can make quilts, but clothes on the other hand are usually pretty difficult for me.  Most times, my mind just can't grasp how to put the pieces together after reading the directions. I need someone to show me how.  Usually that someone is Brad!  But what do I do when I don't have a  Brad around?

Well with lots and lots of prayer, and a bit of God given patience I think I have done fairly well with this dress of Gracie's.  It only took me two days to figure out how to put the elastic around the wrists, but I finally figured it out!   It only took me one long night to figure out how to baste and gather!  And now, here I am three nights into my invisible zipper!  I couldn't understand the written directions, so I googled for invisible zipper tutorials, and I thought that would help.  I ended up putting it on wrong and upside down.  So I prayed just one more time for a little understanding, and God said to me, "Heidi, try Youtube!"  My goodness, it was there,  and it was exactly how I thought it  was supposed to be, but I can't ever figure those things out on my own, I usually need someone to show me first.  And why I didn't think of Youtube first is beyond my understanding,  but I liked leaning on God to show me!

So now I am off to have a nice visit with my friend Seam Ripper (she and I have become quite good friends over the course of this past week and a half), and to make some tea for Zoe.  All three girls are sick again. I guess we've really been given our share of sickness this winter!

Decisions, Decisions

Tomorrow is dance class day.  I don't mind going, but Aggie is sick again.  That poor kid has been sick every other weekend since the beginning of January.  And with Brad gone away, there is no one here to keep her home.  Also, the dogs are sick, and if I leave there is a good chance, that there will be a not so nice surprise waiting  for me when I get home.   So chances are, I am going to have to break Gracie's and Zoe's hearts come morning.  I really don't like doing that!  But sometimes it must be done.

Homeschooling

I was reading an article tonight about online charter schools, and how they take away money from the traditional public schools.  And then I started reading comments left by other readers.   Why do people assume that because my children are homeschooled that they are not being fed socially?  Why do people assume that I need a college degree to teach my children?  Why is it that people assume that because my children are homeschooled that they are going to be a burden to society when they grow up?

SOCIALLY---Though Gracie does become shy when other adults approach her, she is far from that when it comes to kids her own age and older or younger than her.  She is willing to play with anyone (which can be bad), but she is never willing to leave anyone behind!  She is never willing to make fun of others either, and does not care if other kids are different than she is.  Just today, as we were taking our nightly walk, and a little girl that Gracie had met since we moved here, stood on the street with another girl and called Gracie a name.  At church, other girls will tell Gracie that they won't be her friend if she is friends with other girls.  Gracie cries to me and and asks why can't everyone just be friends.   If that is what socialization is, then that is not what I want.

COLLEGE DEGREE-Why is it assumed I am dumb, and know nothing because I don't have a piece of paper that says otherwise.  My goodness, a lot of teachers with those degrees shouldn't even have those degrees.  I don't need to prove my intelligence to anyone.  And I most assuredly don't need a piece of paper to prove it.

BURDEN TO SOCIETY--I just bet if you take a look at those who are a "burden on society", I'll bet you not many of them were homeschooled.  In fact most were probably taught their wonderful social skills, by outstanding teachers with the most sought after degrees.

The topping to all of this, is that some people think that because my daughters are being socially deprived by an uneducated mother, that my daughters should be taken away from me so that they can become a burden on society.

I'm just saying....

Howdy

It's funny, I can think of a million things to put on here, but when I actually get on here, I absolutely forget all that I was going to say!

So I've gotten a bit tired of not being able to find any decent clothes for Gracie to wear, so in my desperation I searched and searched until I reached the end of the internet, and I came across a nice little site, The King's Daughters, and they have the most beautiful modest dresses, that Gracie absolutely adores!  Brad and I like them also!  So I let Gracie pick out her favorite, I ordered the pattern, and I am now in the process of making her a cute age appropriate modest dress.  We went out the other day to pick out some fabrics.    So wish me luck!  I really am not that great at sewing clothes, but I am going to take my time and not rush through this!

Speaking of the word modest...it reminds me of God.  He so awesome, and has been doing a work in me for about the last six years, only it took me until about a week ago to realize that he has been working on me that long...I just thought it was within the past year that I felt his calling, but that is not the case.  I have learned recently that I am not alone in this world.   I am not the only 29 year old Christian girl who wants to have as many children as God wants to bless her with.  Did you know that most refer to it as being quiverfull?  I've learned a lot more, but I will get into those later.  I just feel so blessed beyond anything I can say!

Until next time...

Just an update

Not much going on in our world.  Aggie was really sick this past weekend, and I think maybe still teetering with it.  She is awfully cranky and fussy.  So far the other two are ok.

Oh and I found out that I can add pictures using things such as photobucket, so when I get more time and can figure out how to add them, I will!

Gracie has started her first quilt.  It is a doll size quilt, and I have to say, she is pretty good at sewing straight lines!

Learning new things!!

It's exciting times in the Perkins' house, because The Perkins' Girls are learning to sew!  Gracie got a really nice sewing machine for Christmas and she has been practicing her straight lines, which by the way she is pretty good at!  ZoBo got Gracie's old one ( and now I know why I never got around to trying to teach Gracie on that thing).  I think Brad spent more time fixing it than Zoe did trying to use it, and Aggie was just as excited and frustrated at the same time to only be able to watch.

I remember right before Christmas I was telling someone that we were getting Gracie a sewing machine for Christmas, and they thought seven was just too young to learn to sew.  I am glad I had an open mind!  I can't wait to see the things my Perkins' Girls are going to pop out of their imaginations with the skills they are going to learn!

Woohoo!!

So it's been a while, but I sort of figured out how to add a picture!  I guess it will a take a bit longer than what I thought to figure out this whole thing...but that's ok.  Until I have more time...

Welcome!

Welcome to our little world!  Right now, this isn't much, but I am pretty sure it will turn into something great.  An even better way to keep in touch with family and friends.  And probably make new ones, too!  I'm not exactly sure what to do with a blog, but I am sure I will quickly figure that out!

To start things off, I homeschool my daughters,  whom, I love to refer to as The Perkin's Girls.  My wonderful husband is in the Air Force. We've been married almost ten  years!   We were high school sweethearts.  We have two dogs and a cat.  God's blessed us with a great deal of happiness.  I couldn't ask for anything else in return.  So on that note, I will be signing off and trying to figure out how to add a picture of my lovely family...
