Food Allergy News From Our House

• Sep. 9, 2007 - Recognizing The Signs Of A Reaction

So far, most of Randy's reactions were obvious because of the redness he has gotten around his mouth.  But, I learned that the symptoms do not always have to be the same.  They could change at any time.  One thing to keep in mind is that an anaphylactic reaction is systemic.  That means, involving the body systems (heart, digestive tract, respiratory system, etc.)  So, there are many things to watch for.  Here are some I can think of off the top of my head, but you can visit FAAN's site for a better description.

mouth- swelling or itchiness inside the mouth, throat, lips.

respiratory-wheezing as the airways start tightening up.

gut- diareah or vomiting

heart- slowed heart rate as body leaks fluid and lowers blood pressure.

I know I am forgetting something.  I thought I had a list from the seminar, but apparently I do not.  I will get the rest of the information and add it here then.

Do you have a Medic Alert bracelet for your little guy yet? What about an emergency action plan? Even though you are with him, in an accident you could become separated or unable to speak for him. Preparation is key. I think if you order your MA bracelet through the Kids With Food Allergies website, you can get a discount. I have one for each of my kids- even the no known allergies ones, just to be on the safe side. I don't want anyone offering my child a cookie to comfort him if he gets lost. KWIM?

Yes, he does have a medic alert bracelet. It took awhile to get him to wear it, but now he is very use to it. In fact, if I forget to put it back on after his bath (if we take it off; he is starting to get use to NEVER taking it off), he quickly reminds me to put it back on.

You are very right about having the plan of action. Do you think the medic alert bracelet is enough, say if we were in a car accident? Would the paramedics know to look at it right away even if he isn't hurt?
