You know, Dave Ramsey says to eat beans and
rice, rice and beans. We have joked about writing a cookbook called
"101 Affordable Beans & Rice Meals", or something to that effect,
and see if Dave Ramsey would endorse it. I still think it would be a
good idea.
See, a couple weeks ago Mom and I wnet to Costco. Mom was feeling
tired, so she went to the food court to sit, and had me pay. (I made
sure to watch and see where she sat so I wouldn't look dumb looking for
her when I'd finished--I've done that before--but that's another story.)
Anyway, we were getting three cases of tomato sauce. The gal who was
putting the stuff back in the cart (I guess you could call her a
"boxer", since the same person at Albertson's would be a "bagger", but
at Costco they don't use bags, just boxes) says, "Whoa! That's a lot of
tomato sauce! What do you make, spaghetti?" (Keep in mind this is
*tomato* sauce, not *spaghetti* sauce.)
"Well, yeah, that but mostly chili and Spanish rice."
"Oh, Spanish rice? How do you make that?"
"Oh, hamuburger, tomato sauce of course; garlic, chili powder...spices...like that."
"Oh."
"Eugh, Spanish rice," the cashier broke in. "When I was a kid, we ate
Spanish rice for a month straight! To this day I can't *stand* Spanish
rice!"
I laughed, because I concurred with this unfortunate man.
"Ew! Why would you want to do *that*?" the boxer asked, a grossed-out look on her face.
"It's cheap," the cashier said simply.
"Yes, and so is chili," I said.
"Oh." She looked thoroughly disgusted.
And now, in closing, please see my one-week beans-and-rice menu
(http://homeschoolblogger.com/pianogal86/5102). Oh, and if you have the
inclination, I'm open to any more cheap beans-and-rice recipies. =)
