Teach, Live, Love's Husband

Apr. 25, 2008 - Many Reasons to Homeschool...or Not

There are many different kinds of homeschoolers.  And I have found that in some circles, it is assumed that all homeschoolers are just like themselves.

Do you homeschool for religious reasons?  Not all homeschoolers do.

Do you homeschool because you think that the public school system is evil?  Not all homeschoolers do.

And the flip side is just as varied.  Just because some people don't homeschool doesn't mean that they, themselves, are evil, or that they don't love God.

As for us, we're not really in any of the "stereotypical" homeschool profiles.  We began homeschooling for one very simple reason: our child needed it.  We recognized that he was not getting what he needed in the school that he was attending, and so we decided to homeschool.

Have we seen spiritual benefits?  Yeah, I think so.  Do I think the public school system is evil?  Not exactly, but I see huge flaws in its approach, and I don't agree with much of the systemic self-preservation techniques.

We're in an odd situation, too, because Christy has continued to work within the public school system.  So when we're reading blogs of homeschoolers who think it's just selling your soul to the devil to set foot in a public school, we don't feel like we fit there.  Yes, we understand the philosophy, but no we don't fully agree with all of it.

Anyway, having said that, I saw an interesting blog post (thanks to my lovely wife who forwarded it on to me) that talks about the different reasons why some homeschool and some don't.  I'd encourage you to read it, especially if you tend to think that everyone homeschools for the same reasons you do.

The homeschool community is vast and varied, and though we have our own beliefs about homeschooling and the reasons to homeschool only, I have learned - by reading blogs, haha - that what you are saying is true. We have to get out of our own little worlds sometimes, while staying in God's plan for our own little worlds! :))
I think it is also important to understand that many times, the reasons for homeschooling are personal and not against other homeschoolers. Many of my friends do not homeschool the way we do. That does not mean I think they are wrong. It means we are homeschooling for our family, the way we need to. I believe some methods work better than others. I also know that it took me some time to get to where I am, and with the Lord's grace! And I have still not arrived!

Blessings to you and Christy!
I am opening this article you referenced and hope to get to read it later!

I heard from one curly-headed boy it was your birthday (technically) yesterday. I hope you had a fantastic day and did something special with your family. :)

My birthday is in a week..... wish you guys could come for my party, but you'll then be celebrated Mrs. Christy's bday, which is the same as mine!

Hey! Thanks for commenting on my blog post. I started both blog sites to see which one gets more exposure and interest, so it doesn't matter which one you follow. How does one add friends on this thing? I can't seem to find the link. Thanks!
