Jan. 17, 2009 - Family Size

There is a new video coming out that speaks of the family size is shrinking drastically all over the world, but also in our country. The movie is entitled Demographic Winter.  Here is a YouTube short preview of the film.

These problems have been happening for years in Germany. Many people chose to have no children or only one child and there are so many elderly adults and not enough young people to care for them. The problem is so bad that the German government will give women KinderGeld or money every month per child, hoping to encourage the women to have children.

I am almost finished reading Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank B. Gilbreth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey.  I have enjoyed this book immensely.  I wish I had known this family growing up or even now.  It sounds like it was always fun to be with them.  I'm at the end of the book and I'm saddened to see the girls rebel against their parents so much.  I did some research on their family online to see if their children had large families as well.  None of them did.  Most had 2-3 children and only one had four.  Their great-grandchildren were about the same.

I just hope to share the message on the importance of having large families if it is possible and the health of the mother permitting.

We live in England and have 9. I have also read the book, but I saw the contrast how they were growing up in an environment which was sadly not Christian. I guess it is true the saying in Proverbs about training a child up and he will not depart!

I'm so glad to see that I wasn't the only one who saw that. And I think that because of that the rebellion came and then no one else had larger families. It was sad to see but also a testimony of how important it is to raise our children righteously.

Thank you for your comment! Congratulations on 9! I would love to have that many one day. I've been nervous about pregnancy after such a hard one last baby. I haven't given up...just procrastinating it and working on my health. :)

Hallo! I am new to your blog! I am an American and I live in Germany. I am a mother of five and can attest to the shrinking families in Germany. I have had many akward moments walking into a store or restaurant with my large family. Thankfully I have wonderful children and hopefully this will give others the courage to start their own family.

I also worry about London. Last year I went on a trip to London for a few days with some friends. As we were walking the streets, my friend elbowed me and asked if I noticed anything weird. We noticed there were no children. Granted it was a Saturday morning and maybe they weren't out to play yet, but it was a very strange feeling. Not one child. Later we did notice a mother walking with her baby in a stroller, but that was about it at that time.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
