Plans for this school year

Posted in Homeschool Day

I'm finishing up a move into a brand new home.  I'm so excited about it!

We start school next week and this is what I have planned so far:

Cailynn and Charisa will study manners via Judith Martin (Miss Manners) and her books, Emily Post's books.  They will be doing reports in the following topics within the manners categories:

Correspondence
Eating/Dining
Around the House
Public
Friendship
Entertaining/guests
Everyday Manners

They are also required to teach us what they learn.

As a young teen I studied every one of Miss Manner's books and a few by Emily Post.  It has been such a valuable tool in my life and given me much confidence in most situations knowing what good etiquette is and what is not.

Math

We will study fractions via the Kimber Academy book as a family and I will vary the level of difficulty accordingly.  This will be in addition to our Saxon math books.

Grammar and Composition

We will be studying together Harvey's Elementary Grammar and Composition, which is a classic book from the McGuffey series.  I love how it teaches life's lessons in addition to just grammar.  This book makes the student think with its searching questions.  I have learned new things just from browsing.

Reading

As a family we are focusing on scriptures, Charles Dickens, finishing Tom Sawyer, and reading in The Book of Virtues.  I hope that I am setting a good example to the kids as I have read 12 books so far this year.  Benjamin (9) has cruised through many of the Magic Treehouse books.  He totally wants to move into something big and he is trying Anne of Green Gables.  I'm encouraging him and letting him decide if he is ready or not.  Cailynn (12) loves Nancy Drew and has read almost the entire collection.  She's read 8 books: 2 Benjamin Franklin books, 2 Nancy Drews, 2 Hardy Boys, Caddy Woodland, and I Lived a Thousand Years (a book on the Holocaust.  Chrisy (10 almost 11), my feminine one who prefers to learn homemaking related tasks than read is working on a big book called "1000 Years over a Hot Stove."  I bought it hoping that it would interest her as I know what she has a passion for.  I also bought the book Savory Suppers and Fashionable Feasts by Susan Williams for her.  This book is fascinating.  I love history and culture mixed with meals and homemaking.  This book has all that and more.  She is very excited to read this one next.  Hmmm….just like her mom…

I let the kids set up Goodreads accounts to keep track of their books and the books they want to read next.  It’s also nice because their aunts, uncles, and grandparents can keep track of what books they have, books read, and which ones they want to read in the future.

Handicrafts

Once the furniture is in place in our new house, I plan to begin cross stitch lessons. I’ve also been itching to get back to my sewing.  The children love to help and I plan to let them learn to embroider and we’ll put together a family quilt with embroider pieces the kids did.

I am excited to kick this school year off to a good start.  I am feeling healthier and much more ready for the task!

Two TJEd Audios

Posted in Homeschool Day

I have been doing A Thomas Jefferson Education with my children since the summer of 2005.  I have read as much about as I can get my hands on, but what really has helped me understand it so much better are the following two audios offered on the GWC site:

A Classical Approach To Art, Math And Science

The Seven Keys of Great Teaching

I hope these help you spark your creativity and inspire your important mission of helping your children while they discover their life's mission.

Beat the Clock with the Victory Drill Book

Posted in Homeschool Day

Growing up I was homeschooled for more than half of my school years. My mom used the victory drill book to improve our reading skills and especially our oral reading skills. My sisters and I loved to race against the clock and see who could read the most, and see who could read the fastest. We loved using this book!

Since I've been homeschooling I searched for this book and finally found it today! I'm so excited to see it! I thought I would share:

Talks on the IPOD and Teaching Boys

Posted in Homeschool Day

I bought an IPOD specifically so I can listen to talks on tape or books on tape (turned into a playlist) and none of my CD's get ruined.  AND they are all in one place instead of all over.  The age of technology has been a blessing as far as getting rid of my stacks of CD's that get mashed into the floorboards of our truck.

My family and I have listened to countless hours of mind improving talks on the IPOD while we are running errands or going from place to place in the car.

Someone had recommended this talk from Excellence in Writing website.  It is incredible.  I learned so much from this talk.  Not just about homeschooling my one son, but also the differences in girls and boys as far as learning.  This knowledge can also apply to life, chores, you name it!  It was only a $3 download.  Even if you don't have an IPOD you can listen on your pc or burn it to your own CD.  Here is the link to order if you are interested.

Other talks I enjoy listening to are those from the Vision Forum and George Wythe College since we are avid Thomas Jefferson Education Homeschoolers.

Homemaking This Week

Posted in Homeschool Day

Last week was such a busy week for me. I was canning, mending clothes for my neighbor, Bread and Butter picklesgardening, getting the grocery shopping done, and filing taxes. Bleck- I hated that! I went to an accountant to file. We also incorporated the business!!! YAY! We are now an LLC!

Homemaking list for last week that I did get done:

  1. Finish the ezine
  2. Canned jelly (orange and maraschino cherry)
  3. Updating the Deluxe Edition
  4. Made homemade laundry soap
Homemade laundry soap
The homemade laundry soap this week and will be putting the instructions on the Deluxe Edition- along with the bread and butter pickle recipe. Keep an eye out for those!

Books
I'm currently reading or about to read and HIGHLY recommend: Hiding in Plain Sight by: Ken Bowers - A LDS based book about secret combinations in the last days. You can purchase it through its publisher at www.cedarfort.com

The Anatomy of Peace: Resolving the Heart of Conflict (BK Life) Institute, Arbinger

http://www.arbinger.com/en/home.html What if conflicts at home, conflicts at work, and conflicts in the world stem from the same root cause? And what if individually and collectively we systematically misunderstand that cause, and unwittingly perpetuate the very problems we think we are trying to solve?

Bonds That Make us Free by Terry Warner Terry Warner's own treatment of his work around the problem of self-deception. The book is intended for a general audience. http://www.arbinger.com/en/home.html

 Herbal Remedies

As highly recommended by my chiropractor: Monolaurin - Adults 3/meal for 1 week for kids 1 capsule 2x daily at meals.

Herbal Resistance (found at Vitamin Shoppe) as directed and

P73 Oregano Oil (found at Vitamin Shoppe) as directed

Seeing the benefits that the oregano oil has done for me and even Bella's spider bite, He said that these three things should be in every home and used whenever you feel the slightest bit of sickness coming on.

Allergy Testing

I will be getting some further testing as far as allergies and other natural therapies such as: detoxification, live blood analysis, tissue mineral analysis, energy medicine, and saliva hormone testing from the following naturopath: http://www.laluzcenter.com who is local here in North Carolina if anyone is interested. I will be seeing her in two weeks and will let you know the findings. She will be doing the live blood analysis on the first visit.

I recently discovered an allergy/sensitivity to: potatoes, wheat, tomatoes, bananas and latex.

As a pleasant end to my post, pictures of the DELICIOUS jelly I made!  We're finding new "excuses" to eat it!
