Beautiful Girlhood

Aug. 19, 2008 - ST. Lucia Buns From: Kirsten's Cookbook

INGREDIENTS

1/3 cup milk

1/4 cup butter

1/4 cup lukewarm water

2 1/4 teaspoons dry yeast

1/4 cup suger

1 egg

1/2 teaspoons salt

1/4 teaspoons saffron (I did not use it)

2 3/4 cups flour

1 tablespoon cooking oil (you can use PAM)

1 egg

1 tablespoon water

24 raisins

DERECTIONS

1. Warm the milk in a small saucepan ocer low heat.  Cut the butter into small pieces.  Add the butter pieces to the warm milk and stir.  Then turn off the heat.

2.  Measure the lukewarm water into large mixing bowl.  Sprinkle the yeast over the water.  Stir Well.  Set the bowl aside for 5 minuets.

3. Add the warm milk and melted butter to the yeast.  Stir in the sugar, egg, salt, and saffron.  Then add  1 1/2 cups flour and stir until smooth.

4. Add enough of the remaining flour so that you can shape the dough into a ball.  Save some of the remaining flour for kneading the dough.

5. Put the dough on the floured cutting board.  Dust your hands with flour and knead the dough.  Add flour when dough gets sticky.

How to knead

 1. Push the heels of your hands down

into the dough and away from you.

2. Fold the dough in half.

3. Turn the dough.

4. Push the dough again.  Repeat these steps.

They will soon become simple,

and your kneading will have a rhythm.

6. After 5 to 10 minuets of kneading, you will have a smooth ball of dough.  It should spring back when you poke it with your finger.  Cover the dough with the towel and let it rest while you wash and dry the mixing bowl.

7. Spread cooking oil in the large bowl (you can spray it with PAM).  Roll the dough in the oil until coated.  Cover the bowl with the towl and set it in a warm place to rise.  After 45 minuets, the dough should be twice as large.  If not, check it again in 15 minuets.

8. Punch down the dough.  Then devide it into 6 sections.  Take 1 section and dicinde it in half.  Roll ech half into an 8 - inch rope.  Cross the 2 ropes in the middle .

Here it is finished,

Jul. 26, 2008 - 2 Tarantulas! WOW!

Do all of you know what a TARANTULA is?  It is a huge hairy spider.  Well the other day my dad found one in our grass.  I have not seen one of those in a long time.  We put it into our aquarium and fed it a grasshopper.  Here are some pictures of it.

This is the first one we found.  We named it Salsa!

Just yesterday my brother was walking and found another tarantula.  We put it into the aquarium with the other one.  We named him Sammy.

Here it is.

Jul. 15, 2008 - OUR NEW BABY CHICKS!!!

Posted in Farm Life

I have not wrote for a while because we went to Ohio to a youth camp.  After that we went to my grandparents house in Illinois and picked up their furniture; they are moving to Nevada.  I had a lot of fun.

When we got home we saw we had some new baby chicks.   4 of them.  They were cute.  I had let some mothers sit on their eggs.  Today there was only 3 baby chicks.  My brother thought the cats got it.  The other day I found out that another baby chick had died so now there are only 2.

Here is a picture of the baby chicks.

May. 27, 2008 - Just Another Normal Day

Sunday night my grandparents came over.  We talked a long time and then we watched a video called Amazing Grace (it just came out a little while ago.)  While we were watching it we ate popcorn and ice cream. (We have our own popcorn machine.)

Monday we went to our music lessons.  I play the piano and one of my brothers plays the cello.  It went pretty well.  After we ate and came home.  When we got home I played racquetball (we built one at our house) with one of my brothers.  I am not good at it but am trying to learn.  I am not a very good learner.

Okay, I guess that is all,

Serenity H.

May. 16, 2008 - COLORADO!!!

Posted in Outings

We went to Estes Park, Colorado and rented a huge house.  It even had a indoor basketball court.  We went there for my grandparents 50th Anniversary and all my cousins were there; they came from PA and AZ.

Wednesday the 7th.  We went to Celestial Seasonings, that is a tea factory.  When we were on the tour we went into a spearmint room. When you went in it made your eyes water because it was so strong.  After, they had a video and you got to taste tea.

Thursday the 8th.  We hiked Gem Lake, 1.6 miles.  It seemed like a very long hike.  Ha! Ha!   At the top there was a lake.

Friday the 9th.  It was my grandparents 50th anniversary.  All of us grand-kids had to take the grandparents out while the moms made preparations.  We took them to a lake and rented a little carriage with pedals.  The boys pedaled it while Grandma and Grandpa sat in it.  All of the rest of us kids rode bikes.  When we got home the house was decorated.  Then later we did a program, I played Pachelbel's Cannon on the piano.  All of us grand-kids did a little skit of them on their first date and so on.  We also watched a slide show.

Saturday the 10th.  Some of us girls went downtown shopping.   Well, we girls went shopping, the boys went fishing.  I got a shirt that said Colorado on it.

Sunday the 11th.  We went to church and then after went to some friends' house for a pot-luck.

Monday the 12th.  We drove to a church camp then drove all the way up Longs Peak and then rode down with our bikes.  It was almost all down hill.

Tuesday the 13th.  We hiked up Alberta Falls.  There was a lot of snow but was packed down a lot.  It was fun at first but we kept on slipping, then it got very cold.  When we got back from hiking we were going to ride our bikes down the mountain. It was snowing and I could barely see and my hands were freezing and very numb, so I got in the car but some of them stayed out.

Wednesday the 14th we went to Casa Bonita.  A couple of families came along with us.  Inside they had a water fall and had divers that did some short acts.  They had a cave too.  Inside the cave it was dark and they made it scary.

Thursday the 15th.  Odyssey!!!  Now that was so much fun!   There was a 3 story slide that had a bunch of turns, it was covered and it went outside then back in.  We did a Scavenger hunt and just had lots of fun!

Well it really has been a very fun week.

May. 2, 2008 - 4-H Lambs

Posted in Outings

In the last post I told you that 4-H was coming up, well it has already gone by.  This year I raised a lamb.  When I showed him I got last place in Conformation and in Showmanship I got 3rd from last.   I guess I need to practice more.

My brother Seth also raised a lamb and got Senior Grand Champion Showman.  So he had to do Round Robin which is where you show dog, horse, steer, lambs, pigs and goats.  In Round Robin he got  Senior Reserve Grand Champion.  Wesley also raised a lamb.

I sold my lamb for $5 a pound.

It has been a fun week.

Apr. 12, 2008 - This n That

A couple of weeks ago we went to Louisiana for a youth camp.  That was a lot of fun!

I have been reading the Elsie series.  They are pretty good.  I am on the last book.

We went to a Bridal Shower today and afterwards I had a piano recital to play in.  It was my first one so I was pretty nervous.  It went well though.

In a couple of weeks we are going to 4-H were I show my animal and sell it.  I love it.  This is my second year.  Oh!  My lamb is very wild.  But it's slowly getting better.

1/4 yard of border fabric

Step 1:  Take the main fabric and with selvages even, trim edges so they are straight.

Step 2:  Trim the border fabric so that the ends are even.

Step 3:  Placing right sides together, sew the border and main fabric to each other.

Step 4:  Press seam towards the border.

Step 5:   Press under 1/4" on the edge of the border.
