GM Heritage Center
Okay, I know, usually I wouldn't post something like this. But I'll admit it. I have a weird fascination with shiny things. I like lights, silver jewelry, shiny clock buttons, shiny plates, shiny computers, shiny ipods, shiny cellphones, shiny screens . . . I even obsess with having the windshield extremely clean when I'm driving. I think that has something to do with my obsessive-shining-disorder. But that brings me to something else shiny that I LOVE. CARS! But when they're old ones, and they're clean and shiny... they are SO cool! I'll post up my good ones from the Auto Show in a few days.
But as for these pictures... this was taken at the General Motors Heritage Center. It was open to employees and their families about a year ago. The cars there were so neat! I am not going to post every single picture of each amazing car I took a picture of, but I'll just post two--the shiniest ones. I've never seen so many strange and awesome cars in one spot. There were a ton of space-age, futuristic, concept cars that were pretty slick, too. However, I just posted a few of the old ones:

I thought this T-Bird was fun:

Portfolio Cover
For my Adobe InDesign class last winter, we had to make a ton of designs . . . like flyers, post cards, brochures, booklets, menus, business cards, letterheads, logos, you name it! Well, we had to take our favorite comps (about 7) and write up a little paragraph about it, mount it on black, and present it. To start the portfolio off, well, I needed a portfolio cover! I wanted something that was simple, but made you want to open it up. I wanted something that was fresh and clean. I was also thinking, well, tea-house or herbs at the time, since I was on my way to Wisconsin, where a bunch of girls I knew were hosting a tea party. So I was thinking things like "minty", "leaves", "soft", "delicate" . . . you know, tea party things! I'd never been to an actual tea party, so at the time, those were my descriptive ideas of how I thought a tea party was (i was proven wrong, and words should have been, "loud", "messy, "noisy", "hot", "crazy", "silly", and the like).
Anyways, here's what I came up with:

If you wonder why it's a bit short and fat (it's supposed to be 8 1/2 x 11"), it's because i did a really fast, sloppy crop job to take my first and last name off. I just pretty much whacked the bottom of the page off, lol. But you can get the main idea, I think
OH! One more thing before I go . . . no promises, but I'm going to try to throw together a fun wallpaper for Thanksgiving! That is, if I homework doesn't get in the way of throwing the wallpaper.

Do Unto Others
Well, I had to post this today. I was working and a little bummed about how slow it is (of course it IS at the end of our season). But we've got specials on cider, donuts, and apples. If you buy any three of the same size, you get a fourth free. Well, there were two customers in the store today, an older woman and a woman in her late-thirty's or early-forty's. The older woman came up to the counter with one 1/2 gallon of cider, while the younger woman waited behind her with three 1/2 gallons. Well, the woman with the three gallons noticed the one with the single 1/2 gallon, as well as our buy 3, get 4 special. So she did something totally awesome and said since she was buying three 1/2 gallons, and getting a fourth free would simply be too much for her small family, she suggested letting the older woman in front have her free 1/2 gallon.
It was the coolest thing. Of course the older woman refused, and insisted to just pay $2.00 for the 1/2 gallon to the woman, opposed to the regular price of $3.95.
The three of us were laughing, and as I sent the older woman off with a "Have a good one!", she replied, "Thank you, but my day is great already, and it'll last me the rest of the day!" Needless to say, by witnessing one simple act of service, my day was brightened SO much. So were the days of the two customers. It carried me through the whole rest of the day.
I loved it. It was great. It really inspired me to be more thoughtful and to do simple acts of kindness, because they go so much further than even the recipient.
So I just said a quick prayer, knowing that "what goes around, comes around" usually rings true, and I hoped that through what the woman did for the other customer, she would somehow be repaid. |

Teamwork.
CLIENT and EMPLOYMENT flyers for Principle Financial

Teamwork is something that I absolutely love. I love when a small group gets together and brainstorms, and motivates each other, and together they come up with an integrated, creative solution. Usually when I do group projects at school, it's a one-man show. Yesterday was actually different! I was in a group with three other people, we had to choose a number from 1 to 100. We chose #17, since it was November 17th. So we went up to the front, got our corresponding company profile number 17, and had to create two related posters promoting it. We had about 45 minutes to do it. So with one woman reading the print-out our instructor gave us, and another girl looking up key words and phrases, an older gentleman as the idea reinforcer, and me at the Mac, we came up with two flyers just in time. The four of us got up in front of the class, displayed our work and advertised for the company. It actually went, REALLY WELL. I was honestly surprised. It's amazing how inspiring a team effort can be.
I don't think God ever wants people to be alone . . . Moses had Aaron, Adam got Eve, couples have their spouses, children have their parents, and we have the Jewish people to learn from. Everyone has someone in this world, and if there's some days where it feels like we literally have no one--and I've had those days--there is always Someone. He's always there, maybe even waiting for a day when we feel alone, just so we can turn to Him and He can be there for us. We can turn to Him and His words. So when it feels like a one-man job, it's really not; if you want to, you can always have God on your team. Gosh that would make group projects at school a breeze. Since He's good with words, I'd let Him to all the presentations.

Chicago Brochure
On the way home from Hudson, WI, we drove by Chicago. Now, I don't know why, but Chicago is one place in the U.S. that I would really like to visit. No, I don't mean getting stranded with a camper, an expectant dog, and no van, in a hotel parking lot for two nights. I mean, really explore. Shop, go get coffee at Starbucks, go out to eat, and most importantly--tour the graphic design and photography studios that abound in Chicago. Someday, if I have a little business going for myself, I'd like to go down there and maybe learn a thing or two from the owners of the companies (or a least the designers that work for them). I see a lot of work from companies down there and they seem to be a bit more along the lines of what I want to do. They are professional, well-managed, current companies that operate more on a, well, professional level. But that's just how they appear on their websites, hence the reason why I want to check them out in person. Freelance work is pretty much what I want to do, but I'm hoping that freelancing will lead to something a bit bigger. Just a bit.
Anyways, thanks for reading my ramblings. :) Remember the two Chicago circles I posted a while back? Well, what's fun about graphic design homework is that I rarely create something from scratch for homework. I usually play with things I made on my own. I had the light-colored circle and the dark-colored circle. Well I was working on a portfolio for the final project of my Adobe InDesign class. So as we were driving home from Hudson, and right by Chicago (in the meantime I'm wishing I could go to Chicago someday), I just figured I couldn't help but make something Chicago-themed. So I worked on the basic layout of a brochure, and decided to make it informational. I added the information text as soon as we got home and I had WiFi.
The very front section of the brochure is my favorite. The other parts ... eh ... I couldn't think of anything good within the timeframe I had to make this. I should have done screenshots and saved them individually so you could see how each section of the brochure looked if it was folded. Oh well, just put your hands over the parts that you don't want to see with the whole.

I hate the inside of the brochure, but I had fun putting the info together. I love learning little bits of things, even if I don't remember it or never use it. At least it's in the archives file in my head. That way I can use it for referencing if I decide to un-archive my hidden files.

Outdoor Playground.
Well, we all have to amuse the child in each of us sometimes, right? Of course that doesn't mean ACTING like little children (granted, it might be fun on some occasions), but we should always try to keep the innocence and curiosity of them. My family is so blessed to have the property we have in the town that we live in. It's so neat to just go out in our backyard . . . all the way out back into the woods . . . and just stand there. Just to look around. But then of course, something always catches your eye and you go there, explore a bit, and find a new place to just stand there. And stare some more. I love being out in the woods. These pictures were taken a few years ago, but they were so fun, they're still worth posting.

My sister got this one. Yes it looks all relaxing, but trying to balance 5 feet above the ground on a 7-inch wide branch without holding on (my hands are behind me head) and try to manage a smile all at the same time was a minor feat. Oh and this is probably the only picture of a person that you'll see on here. My face isn't showing, so I figured it could pass.

Some of the neighbors obviously thought our part of the woods was definitely way cooler than theirs, so over the imaginary yarn they stepped to a more exciting woody world. But their sign on their property was intriguing, so I managed to get close enough (and thanks to a 3x zoom) got this picture. So what makes them think they are allowed on our property, but we aren't on theirs? Oh, right. We don't have a cool sign. No Trespassing doesn't count I guess.

Some Pictures From Hudson, Wisconsin
My family and I went out to Hudson, WI, in May, and had a great time. We took the UP-route to get there. We were there visiting a congregation and -- I'll say it again -- had an amazing time. There was a conference being held there, so we decided to go. It was awesome to meet so many similarly-minded people, and there were so many girls my age. It's rare to see so many individuals my age so accepting and encouraging. We were all slightly different on our walk in life, but we all were heading towards the same goal. Our families all were excited to learn something from everyone. All the girls were one gigantic group, too! We all of course, had those we could relate to more, but everyone was a part of a whole out there. Whether you were from Michigan, North Carolina, Arkansas, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Missouri, or Texas, everyone was together as a huge group, and we LOVED it. I can't wait to go back.
so here are some of the more scenic pictures I got
This one is alongside the bridge in Hudson, that took you over the river into Minnesota

I love boats, and there were a ton of tiny little boats in the river. They were all just floating silently. It was so cute!

To Be Juliet's Secret
Well, I'm not really fond of love songs (right now at least), simply because I can't exactly relate to them. But what I am in favor of is homeschoolers venturing out and making a name for themselves, which I think this band has. Some of you may know Danielle Quinn and her brother Mike . . . I took German a few years ago with Danielle, and that was right before she and her brother and a few friends started their band, "To Be Juliet's Secret". Now the do write primarily love songs, but I have to say that Mike Quinn's composing and pianist talents are through the roof. Danielle does the vocals alongside Mike, and together with her friends playing drums and bass... they have a really unique sound. If you want to check them out, I guess I'd recommend their purevolume site, since I don't trust the comments on MySpace. I did a concept flyer for them so I could learn a few things in Photoshop using fonts and patterns. They did put on a few concerts, I believe, but not at Laurel Place and they didn't give out a vinyl . . . it is a concept poster for demonstration purposes, only.

~QUEST~
Well, since I posted some pictures of puppies, I figured I'll give their mom a post, too!

The one above ^^^ is a typical showmanship stance known as "stacking", or being "stacked". Quest is a champion, which means she earned a certain amount of points in shows.
Quest is my sister's dog, and had six puppies last month. Cara does have a website for Quest and the puppies, called SeaBreeze Border Collies, where you can see more puppy pictures and pictures of last year's adorable litter!

Some Fun from Summer
Since I didn't have this blog during the summer, I thought I'd post up some of the fun things we did...

This is out in Lexington, Mi, near Port Huron. A friend and our moms went out to a great restaurant and went shopping all around Lexington. This place was probably the cheesiest of all the stores, but it was so uber-cool on the outside! It's called Crazy Joe's Beach Shop.

Well, when you live out in a little hicktown, I guess the word "illegal" means "let's do it"! A guy down on the corner ALWAYS has great fireworks, even though they're illegal. Well we all hopped in the car and flew a mile up the road to the school parking lot so we could see them better. We ran into the volunteer firefighters watching the fireworks. Even thought it was illegal, they didn't seem to mind.

Another shot

And I figured with this being a HOMESCHOOL blog, y'all would love this picture :). Found this at Kohl's in the parking lot. Purdy Cool!
That one is Beth Immanuel, a congregation in Hudson that we went to visit in May . . . I miss everyone there!
