I know that using a whip seems like the best thing to do when the horse won't move or acts up. Before you use it though ask yourself this. How would you like it if someone hit you with a long hard stick? I don't think that you would like it.

Next time you ride don't use force. Pat him if the horse gets spooked. Reassure him every time that he stops. If this does not help and the horse still refuses to move down a certain road or trail don't force him to go on for both of your sakes. It is likly that there is some danger that you don't know about down the trail.
