This past weekend was the girls' State Tournament for JBQ! They did awesome. It is a very intense weekend. Quizzing on Friday night determines what division you quiz in on Saturday. Lulu and Monkey were on different teams for the first time all year. Lulu's team went undefeated Friday night which put them in the Gold division. Monkey's team was made of three 1st graders with this year being all three's first time quizzing. They made it into the Bronze division.
On Saturday Lulu's team only lost one match. They did great! They day ended with us being tied for 1st with two other teams. In JBQ when there is a three way tie places are determined by overall points. They announced 3rd place...not us. Then they said the last two teams tied in points so 1st and 2nd place would be determined by who won in the match between those two teams. We won in that match so........Lulu's team took 1st place in the Gold division in the State of Kentucky!!! We were very proud! In individual scores Lulu took 5th place. She did really well. (Go here for more details on JBQ.)
Monkey's team hung in there and did their best on Saturday. It is a very intense day for the younger ones. They ended up taking 4th place in the Bronze division in the State of Kentucky! In individual scores Monkey took 13th place. We were also very proud of her.
With JBQ, there is competition. But James and I continually tell the girls that they are learning God's Word and that is our main focus. They know details about the Bible at 8 and 6 that a lot of adults do not know. They study hard and God blesses!
We have Missionettes and Royal Rangers at our church on Wednesday night for the kids. They are both really great programs. My husband is a commander for 3-5th grade boys and I am a leader for the Friends Club, 6-8th grade girls. We had an awards ceremony this past Wednesday.
Lulu and Monkey are in the same class this year, Prims. They have a different unit each month. They earn their badge by going to class, memorizing scripture and doing their class work. The girls love this program. Next year Lulu will graduate to Stars. They have both graduated from Rainbows and Daisies with honors. We are really proud of them.
Lil is in Rainbows. This was her first awards ceremony. She was so excited to get her animal badges. I can't wait to see her smile when she sees them on her vest.
It was a busy night. We also had our Valentine's Day parties in our classrooms and our annual Hop-A-Thon. The girls get sponsors to raise money to help pay for all the badges and charms that they earn throughout the year. We play music and the girls see how many times they can hop in 15 minutes. I have a picture of Lil hopping. I have to alter one of the older girls and then I will add it.
It was a fun night. We love our church. God has really blessed us with some wonderful men and women in the Lord to help shape and teach our children. We are very thankful for each one of them.
Lulu took 1st place in her individual score this month for JBQ!!!!!!
We are so proud of her. She has really come a long way from last year. She not only got 1st, but she had a perfect day as well. That means she answered all questions that she was able to in every match. She did great. You can tell by that smile that she was pretty proud of herself too!
Well it's 1:00am and I can't sleep. I have not blogged in awhile so I thought I would at least say hi to Stacy. I just finished typing out some notes for our second round of JBQ matches this Saturday. I get more nervous than the girls do. They have studied hard and know the next set of questions well. This time they will have 142 possible questions to pull from. Each individual match is 20 questions - 15 questions from the new set and 5 questions from the old set. There are four sets of 72 questions. So by the end of the season there will be 288 questions about the Bible that my girls will know. This is just B league. In A league they have the 288 10-point questions plus 20-point and 30-point questions.
Anyway it is pretty amazing to watch these young kids recite details from the Bible at the speed of light sometimes. Sometimes I can't even hear what they say they buzz in and answer so quickly. For example one of the questions for this set is:
"As described in Hebrews, what was the ark of the covenant?" The answer is: "The sacred box which contained the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, the gold jar of manna, and Aaron's rod that budded"
The kids know this entire thing at the word "As". Pretty amazing huh?
After the quiz match on Saturday our hectic schedule begins. We have three birthdays in November. My Monkey will be 6 on Tuesday. Where did the years go? I cannot believe how much she has grown and learned in the past few years. We are having a combined birthday party for Monkey and Lulu this year in the middle of November. It should be lots of fun with lots of friends! Then Thanksgiving and then December. We have four birthdays in December. Lulu will be 8. I will be 31. Of course Christmas is right there in between Lulu's birthday(23rd) and mine(28th). Then James and Lil have their birthday on January 6th. Needless to say the next two month span about wipes us out.....physically and financially ! Lil will be 3 by the way. I am hoping that she matures greatly when she turns 3......
So there is somewhat of an update on us. The girls are chugging along with their studies. We just finished learning about Mercury, the Vikings, a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e, etc. Lulu will be starting multiplication next week. It should make for an exciting week...
This past weekend my girls competed in their first JBQ (Junior Bible Quiz) meet of the season. James and I are coaching their team this year. Our team is all girls: 2 second graders and 3 first graders. These girls did great. They came in 2nd place as a team! I was so proud of all of them.
This will be Lulu's 3rd year quizzing. She was very reluctant to buzz in the first two years. But this year is a different story. She got four perfect quiz outs and 30 points in the other match. She ended up placing 4th in individual high scorers. We were so excited for her. She was grinning from ear to ear. A quiz out means they get 6 questions correct in one match. After that they are out of the match for that round. This eliminates one child dominating the whole match.
This is Monkey's first year quizzing. She did great! She scored in every match and even got one perfect quiz out! She ended up placing 11th in individual high scorers. Not bad for a 5 year old....
I am so excited to see what God has in store for my girls this year through JBQ. They are learning details about God's word and memorizing scripture. It was definitely a proud Momma moment .
This past weekend was the State Tournament for JBQ (Junior Bible Quiz). Lulu's team won 2nd place. They were one question away from taking 1st place. Her team consists of two 1st graders, two 2nd graders and one 3rd grader.
JBQ is a great program. The kids learn questions and answers about God's Word. Each question has a "buzz in" word. For example, one question states: As described in Hebrews, what was the ark of the covenant?. The buzz in word for this questions is 'As'. When the quizmaster says "As", the kids are racing to hit their buzzer first. Then they complete the question and give the answer which is -- The sacred box which contained the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments, the gold jar of manna, and Aaron's rod that budded.
It is amazing to watch young children recite details from the Bible most adult Christians could not recall. The Word is in them and as a parent that is what I want most for my kids. That they would hide God's Word in their hearts that they might not sin against Him.
Lulu quizzes in the B league. She has learned 288 questions. There are 20 questions in one match. By the end of the year, they can pull from all 288. Monkey has been learning questions this year as well. She will quiz competitively next year too. When they reach 4th grade (4th-6th) they will quiz in the A league. These kids have three levels of questions: 10 points (288 questions in all), 20 points (192 questions in all) and 30 points (96 questions in all). The questions get much more detailed as the points go up.

Welcome to our blog! I hope you enjoy your visit. We are a homeschooling family of 5. Our approach is eclectic, but leaning more and more towards Charlotte Mason. Our girls are 9, 7, and 4. Never a dull moment as we desire to teach our girls in the ways of the Lord.
