Where does the time go

Here it is a whole new year and three months have already gone by. How does time slip past so fast?  We have been working  along in school work all year.  Had a few set backs due to illnesses. But should finish up just about on time.

Son no. 3 has taken off on his photography self learning lessons.  The church has him taking pictures for them for special events that we do.

Son no. 4 will start baseball this week. It is his last year with the little league do to his age. His team was one of the best last year. This year they have new team members and old ones have moved on. There is still 3 or 4 old members from last year. Has a great coach . He can' t wait to get started.

Hope to keep this up at least once a week.

Leave you with a picture of our winter days here.""

Fresh Start

Hi All,

I have not been blogging for a long time. So I am going to start again.

We are still Home schooling, Only now there are just two left out of the eight. Daughter number four has just started College and first time job (cashier at Sears). She is only carring one class (math) for this fall. But will up it to two in Jan. So I only have Sons three(11 grade) and four (7th grade) homeschooling.

We have been spending more time outside than inside with books at this time as the weather and fall have been so nice. We do a lot of exploring in the forest preserves by us. Also a few fishing trips with Dad.

Over the summer we have done a little home improvements. We have put in three new windows. Painted the kitchen. Up dated the upstairs Bath.

One of the books we are studing is "The Genesis Record" by Morris. It is amazing how much science is in the first chapter alone. You have space-matter-time continuum. Energy, gravity, and nuclear forces. Primeval hydrosphere , atmosphere for the terrestrial sphere. Earth's lithosphere and plant biosphere. The Celestial sphere. All of this is to prepare the world for living creatures. You could spent a life time just studing the science of the first three days of creation!!!!

Another book we are reading is James Ussher's Classic Survey of the World History. "The Annals ofthe World". It also starts with the book of Genesis and ends at about 73A.D.

These two books alone are what my 7th grader will be using for Bible, Science, and History for the next two or three years.

Got to run and do some laundry (It ain't going to do it's self) and some more cleaning done.

Snow, Snow, Snow

Snow is white, snow is light, snow is cold, snow is fun, so we decided to have fun yesterday in the snow. But forgot the camera, so no Pictures.

We got up early, did schoolwork, and I put dinner in the crockpot and at one we headed out to meet a few other homeschoolers at Plum Creek Nature Center to go sleding down the 30 foot hill. I wish I had pictures to show you how steep the hill is, you have to go to the edge to see the bottom because of the curve of the hill.

My 5 yr old grandson was already at the bottom of the hill before I got to the top. This kid has no fear. My sons Eddie(11) and Pat(15) went with us. We had great time and dinner was done(yeah!!!) when we got back, as I was still frozen when I went to sleep.

Isn't it wonderfull to be able to do school work and to have fun before it gets to cold outside?

Dickens

We are listening to C. Dickens "Great Expetations" on DVD. Older kids, 17 and soon to be 16, thinks it is boring. But I been hearing alot of laughter as they are listening to it.

This is one way to make sure they are reading the book and I am too. They do art and crafts while listening. My 11 year old seem to love it. I know I do as I can get my crocheting done and hear a book I want to read at the same time.

Don't you love tecnology?LOL

Back to School!!

Christmas bbbreak was fun. But, now it is time to get back to school. I don't know about you but we drag on the first week back. Getting back into the routine after 2 of 3 weeks of really no school is big ajustment for us as we are slakers. You know them there lazy people.

So this first week is catch up on what we didn't finnish in Dec. So we will be ready to dig in next week. You know, hard core , toe the line, no slacking. It is going to be hardest , I think on me, I got lazy, sleeping in till 8 just about every day.

AAHHHH Holidays

Do you have as much trouble as I do sticking to the school schedule at this time of the year?  We do way to many fun things than educational things.

There is playing in the snow.

Doing all the craft things.

Christmas programs.

Cookie making.

Parties with Family and Friends .

Gift making and giving.

But best of all the Celebration of Christ our Savior. The greatest gift given to man. It is not something we have to work for, pay for, make for ourselves. Just a gift given in love for us to accept or deny.

Let us not forget the true reason why we celebrate this time of year. And to teach it to our children, so they can teach their children, and on down the line.

Have a very Merry Christmas and share the good news.

Would love to have some feed back on Jensen "Format Writing" .  I have heard some about it and need to know if it will be good for teaching Essay writing .

Also has anyone tried Jensen "Sound Spelling".

November almost gone?

Wow, It has been sometime since I have done any blogging on this. Sorry everyone.

We have been busy with daily school and preparing for the Holidays. I have been having the kids do indiviual work on the subjects of Bible, Math, Reading, Writing, but for History and Science we have been doing Unit Studies.

For History last month we did Christopher Columbus. We did aStudy of his life. Looked up all the places on the map he went to. Did some google searches.

Spiders was the theme for Science. My one Child's speciality and it fit right in with Halloween of course.

This month has been just the basic core of Bible, math, writting, reading. Well you could add in cooking for Thanksgiving, and now crafts for Christmas projects and gifts.

Starting Dec. I would like to read the Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis with my 16yr daughter and then go into her Christmas present of his Space Triology : Out of the Silent Planet , Perelandra: A Novel, and That Hideous Strength: A Modern Fairy-Tale for Grown-Ups . My understanding of these three books are about good and evil. The starting of a whole new beginning on another planet(like creation starting over)

For the two boys I will do the Cronicles of Narnia.

Classical books are........

Classical books are hard to find. I have been looking through the library for the book "The Life of George Washington" by Josephine Pollard and can't find it.

But did get volume 1 of Picturesque America. WOW!! is it a thick book. But has beautiful pencil drawn pictures in it.

Can't seem to find any of Arthur Scott Bailey's book either.

Dog days of summer

For the last two weeks I have had two very sick boys. Eddie with strip throat , and this last week Pat with a very bad virus. Thought I was going to have to take him to the hospital for dehideration. Poor kid couldn't keep anything down for about 4 days. Had a mild fever of 102, cough, soar throat. Today is the first day he has felt half way decent.

We will be starting school this week. Just real simple stuff. We will play math games, grammer games, and do reading. Mainly get back into the routine of doing school. I don't have my lesson plans finished yet.

I love the HomeSchooltracker. It lets you write you lesson plans and who is to use what. Makes weekly schedules for each kid. Progress reports, maintance reports, report cards, list all the books you are useing, even books you are borrowing, videos, magazines, teacher journals, field trips, attendance, ect. All this talk about it , now I want to go play with it. See ya'll later.

Schedules , schedules, and schedules

I have been trying to get a schedule going this month for the kids new school year. I have been informed of a great tool for us mom's that is free of charge for helping us in our scheduling and grading and assignments. It is called the Homeschool Tracker: you can download it from here. There are two of them. One is the free one called the Basic and the other is Homeschool Tracker Plus.

The Basic covers everything that needs covered, but the Tracker Plus is WOW!!! It goes beyond your expectations. And is very reasonably priced.

Aahh!! Summer Days

My son Patrick is in bug heaven. He has been looking at bugs all summer. Since  we got the Digital he has been taking pictures of all the bugs he has found. He really loves spiders. As you can see he has the spider web in the picture along with the grasshopper. I think he was waiting for the grasshopper to be the spider's dinner. Ugh!

He has also been playing with the garden snakes in the backyard. And , Yes, he has been bitten by one. Thank the Lord they are non poisioness.

Kathy has gone to camp with our youth group for the week.

Poor Eddie is sick with strep throat. Running a fever of 103. When he gets sick like this, he has crazy dreams and half wakes up yelling and talking this time about having to hold the very tiny airplane pieces together and his fingers were hurting and couldn't let go. Never did get the whole story this morning. Poor kid. He has been laying on the couch all day under a blanket.

Rain, Rain

Well the heat is still here but at least it has rained alittle and looks like more is coming. We sure need the rain.

Took the 2 youngest boys to a small carnival this weekend and saw nice fireworks last night.

How many of you do school year around? I am going to be doing this with these last 3 I have at home. Especially since we have had alot of days off since we moved in Dec. But, I look at it as Home Ec,Hands On, Handy Man Schooling Classes. These are need to know skills for home owners.

Art- choosing colors of Paint and Painting rooms.

Math- measuring, building kits, arranging furniture to fit in rooms.

Reading-instructions to building kits and following them.

Grammer-new words, following instruction kits in order of sequence

Geo-community, mapping it, finding shops, libraries, parks, ect.

Science-local birds, insects, animals,stars, ect.

Wow! Now that I look at all of that, I believe we have learned alot in 7 months. And have had a lot of fun doing it!
