The Best Laid Plans . . . Are Being Flushed Down the Proverbial Toilet!

Posted in A Method to the Madness?

But, Mousie, thou art no thy lane
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes o' mice an' men
Gang aft a-gley,
An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain,
For promised joy.
-Robert Burns

Before you get really impressed, I had to look that one up.  The point is the same though:  I plan; God chuckles.  Yes folks a grand 2 1/2 weeks into my school year,  I've realized that I should have just gone out and enjoyed the mentos because most of what I came up with is not going to work.  I've planned myself a one-way ticket to Burn-Out Ville.  Did that last year.  Didn't like it.  Wasn't pretty.

Sooo, I decided to shut up and let God tell me what to do.  Please try to control the collective "DUH!"  I'm enjoying creating my own history curriculum, and I think, once I get used to it, I'll come up with something that's best suited to our family.  However, and this is where the big collective "Duh!" comes in, I can't do two seperate curriculums and maintain my thin hold on my sanity.  It's just too hard.

So, God told me (through various and sundry ways - no burning bush but still quite clear), that I am to stop trying to be the uber-teacher and just have both boys do the same units at their own levels.  This is quite a change for us, but I think we're going to like it.  We're also going to drop the four year history rotation that's been driving me so crazy.  I mean, how can you possibly study the Civil War, WWI, AND WWII all in one year to any decent effect?   We're now going to a 6 year rotation, and we'll be starting the year over, back at the beginning.

Here's how it's going to work, roughly.  Paul will finish the Civil War unit because he's really digging it and we might get to go to Gettysburg soon.  He'll then do his 5 weeks of Physics as planned.  During that time George will start his 10 week earth science unit.  Paul will join him for the last 3 weeks of that, and from then on they'll study the same units.  This way it won't be as jarring a flip-flop as if we did it right away, and, since the science units are pretty simple from a planning standpoint, I'll have some time to reconfigure the rest of the year.

I realize I probably sound like a raving nutter switching things around like this, or maybe by not doing it this way from the beginning, but I really think this will be best all around.  I also had my reasons for not giving them the same units from the start, but it's beyond the scope of this post.  You'll just have to scratch your heads and wonder.

I'll let you know what I come up with when I have the details hammered out.

Jennifer, you are one smart gal. I sorta let myself get cornered in with what we are doing school wise and haven't had the courage to just say, No not gonna do this the way everyone else wants me to do it anymore, but I'm making the best of it. This year I am determined to do more nature study and science
despite where we are with KONOS. I don't think it will be more work because we aren't going to hit the KONOS as hard. Anyway, I understand your decision and good for you on having the foresight to ditch it and not trying to grin and bear it.
Kudos! Julie

for trying to make your own history curriculum! It is a lot of work! As a mom to seven kids who has homeschooled for 11 years, I have tried almost everything out there. I love history too....but I just don't have time to put together a whole curriculum (though I do write history related drawing books!). I tend to go for the already totally laid out for me plans...and then just modify them to fit our family. Don't feel bad about modifying your plans or starting over after a couple of weeks. It is totally normal! Better now than in the middle of the year!

Isn't it nice to homeschool and know that if its not working we CAN stop and change things up. I know we tried a year of "solid foundations" as I called it in the beginning, but half way through the kids were all studying different stuff and my mind was going way too many directions and we were all grumpy!! So I am glad I could just stop and go back t oour unit studies and have fun , again. Thaks for stopping by and prayers for my little man, I am hoping to hear some results maybe by tomorrow!!
Have agreat day,
Blessings
Tammy

I laughed. I'm still laughing!
I can't count the number of times I beat my head against the brick wall of "my way" only to finally just let God handle it. Always worked out better His way with less noggin' bruising! LOL!

ROFL! @ "Semper Gumby"!
