Princeofthehill's list of EDIBLE plants*

  1. Plantain:  oval leaves with a tall stalk sticking out of the middle, grows abundantly at the edge of most  fields (not the tropical fruit).

  2. Horsemint:  long stem with small, pale leaves, grows in wooded areas.
  3. Birch:  brown, somewhat metallic bark that tastes like root-beer and oval leaves with ridges. Usually  grows at high elevations.
  4. Sassafras:  three different  types of leaves, the most  distinguishable shape looks like a three fingered claw. Usually grows near trails and roads.

        Sassifras leaves
  5. Turkey mustard:  small plant, with small leaves with ridges.  Usually grows in valleys near creeks. Tastes good, just don't confuse with poison ivy!
  6. Sourwood: shiny oval leaves.  It's very common.

well done young botanist! the only plant I'm not familiar with that you listed was "turkey mustard." there are lots of plants in the mustard family (Brassicaceae) that grow in our area, but I'm not sure which one is turkey mustard. can you post a picture?
