So many questions so little time
Let me say I'm sorry now for how long this might be. The more I think about these things the more complicated they get in my head and the only way to stop the madness is to ask someone else so here it goes. We follow the WTM (Well Trained Mind) and next year will technically be the first year that I am hsing 2 kids. My oldest is 9 and I have been hsing him since 1st grade while my now 5 yr old was only 1. So I really had no trouble because I was only schooling 1. Last year when my youngest was 4 I decided to send him to preschool so that the older one would have a year by himself (which didn't work out the way I thought it would). So now the time has come to school them both and I am so lost in so many ways.

Now both of my boys are what people call gifted which is making this more difficult. I have always explained to people about how WTM is being on teaching kids of different ages at the same time but I think I have talking the talk and now I'm not sure I can walk the walk :) This past year my oldest used Saxon 3, R&S 3, SWC, Sequential Spelling, SOTW 3, Living Learning Books for Chemistry, Draw Write Now and some other miscellaneous stuff.

While trying to decide what to use for this coming year I thought I would give both kids the placement test for Saxon. My oldest showed that he should be in Saxon 65 (not 54 which I planned to use) and my youngest showed he should be in Saxon 1 (not K which I planned to use). Because of this I am starting to rethink everything and I am going crazy.

My oldest should be on physics for science so I think I will teach them both that with Neo Science. As far as history my oldest should be on SOTW4 but I don't want to start my youngest there because I have heard it is very violent. I don't know what to do because my oldest is very much a "been there done that" kind of kid so I don't want to go back to SOTW1 fearing that I will get all kinds a flax from him.

I didn't hs my oldest for K so I have no idea what I should be doing with my little one. He has been reading since late age 3. He is on Step-into-Reading 3 books already so I don't know what program to use to further the reading or what to do for phonics and spelling. I don't know if I should be using K stuff or 1st grade stuff or a mix (then which subjects for which grade). :0

Well I have been babbling long enough. All in all I need help with everything. To top it off I am a perfectionist and a planner so I would like to have everything figured out so that I can get it all ready and still have some of the summer to have fun. Thanks in advance to everyone who voices their opinion.

My opinion for your youngest is to try to get (not buy yet) things in K and 1st and maybe even 2nd. Let him try a few things in a casual manner, then buy. You can print off differnet grade material off the web, borrow books from the library or other homeschoolers. Then you can decide. Don't fret, however. He is still very young. God bless.

Saturday, June 17, 2006 - Relax and Enjoy

I know.. easier said than done... but from a mom of 5 who has homeschooled for 12 years and graduated my 2 oldest, let me say "RELAX and ENJOY". In the early years, focus on exploration and discovery and lots of hands-on experience. Read lots of wonderful children's literature aloud. Take lots of field trips; go on nature hikes; make lapbooks; plant a garden; dress up and pretend. By all means, have them work at the level of their ability in math and reading. If your oldest is ready for SOTW 4, there are plenty of things you can still do with your K son. Instead of focusing on the wars and battles and heavier issues, he can learn about the inventions and transportation and famous people. Science is definitely fun to do together. Let the younger absorb what he can; he'll get it again later on. You are giving him "hooks" to hang his learning on as he gets older. Realize that learning is natural for children ( although they don't always like the "work" of it ) and your goal is to instill a love for learning as you also train them in character. Balance the academics with play and service to others and life skills .
They really do grow up too fast...
