What's New

I thought I would tell you guys what is new in my world. I started a home business that I think is great for hs'ers. It is a candle making business. Not just any candles, Soy Candles. The cool thing about this business is that I actually get to make the candles unlike working for places like Party Lite where you just sell what someone else makes.

There are several things that I like about the company some of which include doing it at my own pace, safe for my kids to make, easy for everyone to make and safe for the environment.

See most candles are made with paraffin wax which is a by-product of the petroleum refinery industry, leftover residue of refined petroleum. Soot given off from burning paraffin candles is the same as burning diesel fuel and the soot particles travel deep into the lungs. Tests show that paraffin candle can produce a variety of harmful substances, including benzene & toluene, known carcinogens. The American Lung Assoc says "Burning paraffin candles can emit small amount of toxins into the air". Not good in my eyes.

Besides what paraffin is derived from it is also difficult to remove from cloth, may not burn completely and must be blended with chemicals to be able to release fragrances.

Now soy wax on the other hand is derived from vegetables, burns cleaner, cleans up with soap and water, burns 25-50% longer then paraffin, burns completely, releases fragrances naturally, faster and longer and most of all supports the American farmer.

I meet someone from this company at a homeschool conference in March of 2005 and got to see the candles at work. In June I decided to buy a sample kit to do with my kids and the girls I babysit for. They were so excited about making the candles and I couldn't believe how easy it was.

I always wanted to make candles but didn't want the hassle or danger so I never did. After seeing how the kids could make these with almost no help I was hooked. By Aug I was what my company calls a Candle Master and I was making and selling candles. I am shooting for my first craft fair in Oct so I will let you know how it goes.

Kathleen the lady that I meet at the conference homeschooled her kids and knows that it is very possible to run a business and raise and hs your children. Her and her son Chris who by the way is one of the top people in the company are even thinking of putting an Economics curriculum together for hs'ers to use well making a go of the business which I think would be so cool. So if anyone is interested and would like more info please visit my website at www.cwlight.com/prlegl and read "Candle Facts" and "Candle crafts". Then feel free to email me at ilovesoycandles@gmail.com and put in the subject line "info on business" and I will be happy to answer your questions and if I can't answer them I will call Chris and have him helps us.

     Well thanks for listening.

Tuesday, September 6, 2005 - Nice blog

Posted by Anonymous

Hey Colleen, I didn't realize you had a blog! It's very nice and I liked reading about what you guys are up to this year. I don't know if I told you before but I review blogs for American Homeschool Association so I will put this blog in the queue to get reviewed. And good luck with your homeschooling year!

Also, I downloaded the basic Homeschool Tracker program and enjoy it. Is it worth springing for the advanced version?
