A Double Birthday!

Today is Jimmy's fifth birthday!

1 day old

And while his birth into our family on November 19, 2003, was beyond wonderful, nothing can compare to the joy we all felt on November 13, 2008, when Jimmy asked Jesus to be his Savior!

Two birthdays in one week.  Priceless!

Here are a few highlights from Jimmy's fifth year of life.

HAPPY 5th BIRTHDAY, SWEET BOY!!

Homecoming: A First for this Homeschool Family

My youngest daughter, a senior in highschool, went to Homecoming on Saturday night with a large group of kids from our youth group. (Nina is the one in dark red.) I guess the pictures below help answer a critically important question homeschoolers must answer regarding socialization and the homeschooled child.

"But if you homeschool, won't your kids miss out on homecoming?"

You can see Nina is a miserably lonely homeschooled  girl with absolutely nothing to do on a Saturday night!  Maybe I should send her to school!

Summer 2008: Photo Journal--Part 2

Summer is all about fun--sunning, swimming, picnicking, and playing baseball. Right?  Okay, so that's only true when you're a kid, but a girl can dream, can't she?

When I wasn't lounging and playing (or fantasizing about lounging and playing) the activity that consumed the bulk of my time and energy was work. For months now I've been blaming my pathetic lack of blogging activity on the fact that I've been working.  Lest anyone begin to question my sincerity, I'd like to provide some visual evidence that the near death of my blog was NOT simply a side effect of overindulgence in a life of leisure.

I LOVE my job as a homeschool consultant and tech writer for Alpha Omega Publications.  All summer I get to travel all over the country representing AOP at homeschool conventions.  This summer I got to go to exciting places like Long Beach, Atlanta, San Antonio, Worcester, Peoria, Cincinnati, Knoxville, St. Charles (IL), and Wichita.  Okay, so Wichita isn't all that exciting.  Sorry, Kansans, but your state just isn't an overly stimulating place...unless of course you happen to be in the fabric section of a local Walmart with Arby.  Now, THAT would be very interesting!  But still, I find that even the most boring places are worth visiting because of all the homeschoolers I get to connect with.  It's definitely the part of my job I wouldn't give up for anything...even though traveling can try my patience at times!  Here's a bit of photographic evidence that I really do work when I travel...oh, and my daughter can attest to the fact that there are usually people sitting in those chairs across the table from me!

Even when I'm not traveling, I've got plenty of work to keep me busy.  The first project that kept me from my blogging was recording sixty five-minute demo clips of the Switched-on Schoolhouse curriculum (which my children have used for the last 9 years).  That was fun...but a bit stressful.  My boss wanted to avoid time spent in post-production, so perfection was my goal!  If you know me, you know what a joke that is!  Here's a link to one of the clips.  Unfortunately, I think you might need to create an account if you want to view it.  So, if you've got lots of extra time on your hands, just follow the link, click "Resources", then "On Demand Presentations".  Click any presentation link to hear my lovely voice!

The part of my job that I could possibly be convinced to do without (except that I really need the money!) is the tech writing part.  I've spent countless hours over the last 6 months writing product descriptions for AOP's website.  Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for a job that allows me to stay home and work, but tech writing isn't exactly the most exciting work in the world!  Here's more photographic evidence of my industrious side...I know it only proves that I was sitting at the computer when the picture was being taken, but really, I sat here a lot this summer!  (and am still sitting here a lot these days!)

I did have opportunity to have lots of fun this summer and I have proof of that too!  Coming soon...Summer 2008: Photo Journal--Part 3!

Summer 2008: Photo Journal--Part 1

My parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on May 17.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, the whole family spent a week in the beautiful mountains near Gatlinburg, Tennessee.  What a wonderful time we had together...all 19 of us in one house for a whole week!  Here are a few photographic highlights:

The house was amazing inside and out with spectacular views from the deck and a REALLY steep driveway!!

We did some hiking.

Thankfully we only lost two of the kids.

We spent hours playing in the river...

Mostly, it was a wonderful time spent with all the people I love most!

My crazy life...in a nutshell.

Oh, you are all so patient with me!! (Well, all except Arby, that is). It's a funny thing about life and priorities...it's when things get really crazy that you realize it's time to stop and think about what's really important.  And, as you've probably noticed, blogging isn't currently one of the most important things in my life. (annoying, isn't it?)

So, since some may be wondering what on earth could be more important than blogging, I thought I'd give you a quick update on what's been going on in my life.

FAMILY: Yep, I still have one.  And, of course, that means homeschooling (I'm finishing up the year with a junior in high school and a preschooler), cooking, cleaning, laundry, shopping, planting and mowing, playing trains, reading books, playing T-ball, etc.  Other family members help out with many of these tasks, but, well, being a housewife and mom is still my #1 responsibility (and joy)!

WORK: I'm still working mad hours for Alpha Omega Publications. Since December, I've been working on copy-writing, recording demo's, and now proofreading for our new website, which will hopefully launch very soon.  Hopefully then I can prove that I really have been working and not just sitting around watching Law and Order reruns or Chicago Cub games while dunking Oreo cookies in my coffee.  (Okay...so I do that once in awhile, too!)  While it is a HUGE blessing that the Lord has provided this work for me to do at home, working at home is a mixed blessing!  4-year-olds just don't understand what you mean when you say (for the 20th time), "No, honey, not right now, mommy's working."

TRAVEL: I LOVE this part of my job, but being away from home 4 days out of every 14 does get a bit crazy.  This Thursday, my daughter and I head to San Antonio for a convention.  Darcy travels with me in the summer months when she's not in school, which is a gigantic bonus of this job!  Great experience for her...great traveling companion for me!  In the weeks ahead we will be in San Antonio, Wichita (are you gonna be there, Arby?), Knoxville (I'd love to meet some of my Tennessee blogging pals!), Long Beach, and Atlanta.

CHURCH: We've always been actively involved in our church, but this year we've taken on just a bit more than we should have!  Our church is in the middle of a large building project and my husband is the project manager (no, it's not a paid position!).  I have been putting in time on the decorating committee, painting, and sewing on top of my regular responsibilities in music ministry, high school Sunday School, and AWANA.  But, lo and behold, there IS a light at the end of this very long, very dark, tunnel.  Our final inspection is in two weeks and we might actually be able to make our evenings and weekends "our own" again. (Can you hear my HUGE sigh of relief?)

FUN: I DO make time for fun from time to time and here's just a few of the things we've managed to fit in:

A wonderful visit with some very special out-of-town friends:

Photobucket

A trip to Brookfield Zoo (If you're ever in Chicago, be sure to visit this wonderful place!)

Lots of fragrant visits to beautiful Lilacia Park...

And lots of bike rides around town.

Photobucket

Well, I have LOTS of substantive blogs in my head just dying to be written, but I'm still having trouble finding the time to write them!  Soon....I promise! Thanks for continuing to stop by despite the lack of substance!!

I Love my Job!

Although the increased work hours that I've had to put in this spring have resulted in a serious lack of blogging time, I really do LOVE my job.  Especially going to conventions!

I absolutely LOVE talking with homeschoolers and helping them answer their homeschooling questions.  Sometimes it seems almost too good to be true that I'm actually getting paid to do something that I enjoy so much!

Not only that, but I get to travel.  This year I have some REALLY great places on my itinerary.  Long Beach, Atlanta, San Antonio, Knoxville, and Worcester.  Not quite as exciting, but still very fun are trips to Wichita, Cincinnati, and Peoria and St. Charles, IL.

But by far the best part of doing conventions is the opportunity to meet people and make new friends.  And this weekend in Worcester, Massachusetts, was especially fun!!  One of the many friends I've made over the months since I started blogging is
JenIG.  Well, she and her daughter Coie were representing Rosetta Stone at the convention in Worcester and we actually got to "hang out" a bit!   We were all far too busy to spend time together during our workdays, but I tried to keep an eye out for her since I was a bit concerned that she might actually give birth to a kidney stone right at her booth.  We were able to go to dinner on Friday night at a really fun (and VERY noisy) 50's Diner.  Jen is EVERY BIT as cool (and adorable) as I thought she would be, but be forewarned, if you ever get the chance to meet Jen in person, she asks lots of VERY personal questions  and is just a teensy bit wimpy when it comes to city driving.  Sorry, Jen, but I was HUNGRY and really wanted to get there!  Jen has a picture of the two of us on her blog...kind of icky picture of me, but a GREAT one of her!  I'm so happy to have been able to meet her and Coie!

While I was in Massachusetts, my family had a GREAT wildlife experience.  All spring we've been watching a Red-bellied Woodpecker build a nest in one of the ant-infested trees in our backyard.  Woody Woodpecker and his wife are both beautiful birds and seem to be very committed to each other and their brood.  They have built a very nice house in our almost-dead tree.  Well, over the weekend Jim and the kids noticed another home being built in our backyard neighborhood.  A Mourning Dove and his pregnant wife moved in and worked hard all weekend constructing their home.

Photobucket

Mrs. Dove must be quite far along because Mr. Dove did most of the work.  Here he is flying in with his recently collected building supplies and giving them to his wife to add to the nest.

Along with the Woodpeckers and the Doves, we've also been keeping our eyes on a young robin couple who have moved in and are getting ready to start a family.

Maybe if we charge everyone rent I'll be able to work less and blog more!

Happy Birthday, Darcy!!

How did this happen?

Our first baby--the little girl who first made us a Mommy and Daddy--just turned 21!!  Since the first moment we laid eyes on her, and every moment since, she has been a joy and a delight!  Her sweet spirit and stubborn determination have combined to make her a force to be reckoned with.  Her love for the Lord and her desire to serve him have clearly become the guiding force of her life...and as parents, we could not ask for anything better than that!  We can hardly wait to see what the Lord has for her in the days and years ahead.

Now for a little stroll down memory lane with our "dark beauty"....

HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY, DARCY!!

Pray for NIU

Photobucket

Please continue to pray for the NORTHERN ILLINOIS UNIVERSITY community.  On February 14, 2008, at 3:06 pm, a gunman opened fire on a classroom filled with more than 100 students.  22 students were shot...5 of the victims died from their wounds.  My daughter is a student at NIU.  Please pray with us that the Lord would be at work in the students and faculty of the university as they try to make sense of this unthinkable tragedy.

I'd worry about this, but I really don't have time.

I have to go make a pot of coffee.

26 December 2007

Out with the Old, In with the New!

Christmas Day was a good day....a fun, relaxing day.  We opened gifts, sat by the fire, and had a nice dinner together with a small number of family members.  We spent the evening eating cookies and drinking coffee with about 35 of my husband's family members...not at MY house, thankfully!!

I'm not sure what it is about December 26th, but I always wake up feeling a strong need to clean!  And believe me, that's not a normal thing for me...just ask my husband!  Maybe it's the end of another year fast approaching...maybe it's all the new "booty" without a home in my cluttered house. Whatever it is, December 26th always feels like a new beginning waiting to be unleashed.

The day dawned cold and clear.  A clean slate.  No school to do, no gifts to buy, no gifts to wrap, no cookies to bake, and miraculously, nothing to return.  In short...NOTHING to do.

So I took advantage of the opportunity and today became a day of "out with the old and in with the new!"

Goodbye to BAGS of old clothes.
(New rule...if you haven't worn it in 5 years, it's gotta go!)

Hello to more drawer and closet space for the new clothes!
(Is it just me or is this closet shrinking?)

Goodbye to mountains of dirty laundry.
(Well, I guess it doesn't really go away...still a mountain...just clean!)

Goodbye to a BUNCH of old toys.
(Another new rule...if it's missing more than two pieces, it's outa here!)

Hello to a more organized toy shelf!
(That should last for about 6 hours!)

Goodbye to a boring old blogging template.
(I've been itching to do this since about 5 days after I started blogging!)

Hello to a new improved, personalized template!!
(The picture was taken from my front porch in New Hampshire...oh how I miss the beautiful snow in New Hampshire!)

It's been a very productive day!  I should do this more often!
