• Apr. 24, 2009 - Just a Girl from the Suburbs!

Alright, I will have to confess I have dreamed of living on a little farm with our own chickens, goats, and sheep BUT I know myself and I know I need a mall, a Target and a Walmart to survive. I know, I know that is so pitiful! I also know I don't want to clean a chicken coup, yuck! I don't want a rooster to be my alarm clock. I don't want manure to be the smell that drifts into my windows on a cool spring day. Yes, I guess the suburbs are for me.

Today we went to a real working farm! It was a dairy farm with 1500 cows! It was quite impressive. The kids had a blast. We actually witnessed a calf being born, how cool is that! The kids fed baby calves, watched pig races, and watched hundreds of cows getting milked. There were goats, sheep, chickens, roosters, turkeys, rabbits, and even a stray kitty all at this farm.

As we were touring this amazing farm I witnessed the cows who relieve themselves at any given moment or place. My dear friend ended up with cow poop on her shirt, eeww! The smell of the molasses the farm uses to sweeten the cows' food was completely nauseating. Horse flies were everywhere. I was ready for the tour to end by the time we got on the itchy hayride. SO you are probably thinking I had an awful time. Not at all!! It was incredible to see how this farm works. The farm was owned by christians who work very hard for their living. I truly respect the hardworking farmer. These farms are the heart of America.

I am sure the kids learned plenty today but I also learned plenty too. My biggest realization is that I am just a girl from the suburbs and I am okay with that!

The cows being milked!

This is a picture of the baby calf being born. It's not a great picture.

The baby calf after it was born (not a great photo either)

The kids are looking down and watching all the cows getting milked.

The cows walk through a "bath" after being milked .

Yes, this is really a picture of a pig race!

The kids justed finished playing in the coolest haystack! The haystacks were made into fort with a tunnel. The kids are dirty and tired here but they had a blast.

We ended our fun day at McDonalds with ice cream

• Apr. 24, 2009 - Strawberry Picking 2009

March is the annual spring pickin' time for strawberries! This year I went with my dear friend "T" and her kids. We picked 18 quarts each! Oh, the joy of washing, drying, packing, and freezing all those strawberries. It was worth it! After strawberry picking we went to the coolest park. These trees were on top of hills with their roots exposed. My pictures don't serve it justice for how amazing it was.

• Mar. 14, 2009 - My love for my favorite curriulm!

My Father's World, our favorite curriculum

When I began homeschooling 3 years ago, I was looking for the perfect curriculum for every subject. In my first year I was so full of new ideas and excitement. I wanted to try everything and boy, did I. I had a separate program for bible, geography, history, art, art history, music, science,  math, grammar, spelling and and and...........

You get the point. I had a lot to cover in one year. It was a perfect recipe for disaster. Did I get it all covered? No way! I had visions of nature studies, studying historical art pieces, reading classic novels and beautifully written pieces of writing but instead I was frustrated that I couldn't meet up to the standards I had set for myself.

So when the first year of homeschooling was under my belt, I had to rethink my way of homeschooling. As a homeschooling mom, you know what that means. It means hours of looking at catalogs, searching the web, talking to other homeschool moms and even calling many curriculum companies. I was trying to figure a way to get perfect curriculum in all subjects! As I was searching I remembered someone mentioning "My Fathers World". I had looked at it before but it was one of those pre-package curriculums and that was not what I wanted. I wanted to put together my perfect plan of curriculum on my own BUT I kept going back to "My Fathers World".  After hours and even weeks of deciding, I purchased this pre-package curriculum. Why would I do what I said I wouldn't.  I discovered that My Father's World was the closest thing I could find to my perfect curriculum all in one package. So let me explain why I love it.

First, I love the philosophy of this program and how they put the heart of child first.  That is what drew me to the program first. So let me go through the program and explain how it works. It combines the methods of Charlotte Mason and classical education.

My Father's World has many one year unit study type programs starting with kindergarten and all way up to the high school years. We started with the Exploring Countries and Cultures program. This program is designed for 2nd-8th graders.

It is a multi-age unit study: The program is designed to be used with more than one child at a time. This is a big time saver! I teach all the subjects together except language arts and math.

Strong international focus: In Exploring Cultures and Countries you visit a country every two weeks. You learn about the country's geography, ecology, and cultures. You spend time learning about the common religions in each of the countries you study.

Integrated Bible content: In Exploring Countries and Cultures you spend the year reading the book of Matthew and memorizing many verses from Matthew. You read about missionaries from the past and present. You learn what God is doing in other countries and you are shown how you can pray for each country specifically.  It teaches a wonderful biblical worldview.

Geography: You do plenty of map work each week and with that you learn plenty of mapskills. Older students can do research projects as they study each of the continents. You play games to learn the names of all the countries, oceans, capitols, and continents.  You make a passport and you place a flag sticker in your passport as you "travel" to each country. There are hands on activities such as cooking and flag making. You learn new geography terms every week which the student keeps in a journal.

Science : You spend the year studying habitats from all over the world. You spend time taking nature walks and keeping a nature journal.

Reading: There is plenty of living books provided with this program! My Father's World does something called a reading basket. Everyday the children read books you have selected from the library or have purchased. The books are all related to what you are currently studying such as rain forests. You may have many subjects to chose from some fiction and non-fiction. There is a read alouds included in the program. The read alouds coincide with the country you are studying.  In ECC the read alouds are true stories of missionaries.

Art and Music The program has plenty of art projects based on the countries you are studying. There is also a CD with ethnic music from around the world.

Language Arts, Math and Foreign language : They suggest certain LA and Math programs but you can add whatever you choose.

Now let me tell you the pros of this program: I love how it combines the methods of Charlotte Mason and classical education. It is a perfect mix of both of these philosophies. I love the journaling and the nature studies. The teacher manual is a huge plus. It so well laid out. Each week is laid out on a grid and then additional informational is given for the planned activities. The TM tells you what needs to be photocopied for the week and what extra supplies are needed. The supplies are easy to find items. The TM gives a list of books you can check out at the library or purchase for your reading basket. The TM is so easy to use, generally this program is an open and go. The bible is my favorite portion of the program. I love the memory verses. Easy to do but challenging. I love how it tells you to pray specifically for each country. You learn what challenges missionaries face in the field. I love how you can combine your kids for so many subjects. It turns learning into a family time together.  I love the biblical worldview that is taught throughout the program. The crafts are easy to do and fun. I love how you can chose you own math and LA. The program is designed to be done 5 days a week and Friday is a light day. It can easily be turned into a 4 day week by combining Friday's plans into other days of the week.

Now let me tell you the cons of this program: I felt the science to be a bit light for my taste. We did add more science to the program. My Father's World is coming out with an updated version for ECC and it looks like they have added more to the science. You have to be okay with having everything all laid out for you. For me this was a plus since it is done so well. The music was not my favorite, a bit too kiddy for us. In the other programs of MFW the music is done more to my taste with classical music. We felt the read alouds to be a bit dry. We did add some of our own read alouds. If you don't live near a library with a decent selection of books it would be hard to incorporate the reading basket idea.

My Father's World is coming out with a new edition of Exploring Countries and Cultures. The science looks improved.  There is less photocopying, and there is a nice supplement you can order for 7-8th graders.

We are in our second year of My Father's World. We are presently using the Rome To Reformation program. We are loving this program just as much!  We plan to stay with My Father's World for the long road maybe even all the way through!

• Mar. 27, 2008 - Blessing of a new skateboard!

MP loves to skateboard! As you can see he keeps his hair long to maintain the proper skater image. His old board ( I am sure you can pick which one is the old board) is very beaten up from lots of use. MP went to the church's skate park where the "Untitled Team", a christian group of professional skateboarders came to the skate park. They did a great demo and then gave their testamonies. Afterwards they had a contest to see who had the most beat up board. MP WON! He won a brand new board. MP had been asking for this board for months. What a blessing! MP was so happy!!

• Mar. 23, 2008 - Strawbrry picking is school!

We decided one day last week to have a field trip and go strawberry picking! There is many things to be learned from strawberry picking such as math-how many quarts can you get $5.00 (ten to be exact); agriculture- how to grow and pick strawberries; science-root systems; language arts; journaling our day; spelling. I think you get the idea. I love homeschooling! When can we can go strawberry picking again?!

Hello family and friends!! It's been well over a year since I have blogged. These years with my kids are so precious. I hope to get some of these memories recorded to share with you.

In the picture above my little angel is making a recipe from her first cookbook. She was so excited.

The recipe was called Ham'n Cheese Bites.

My little angel rolled ham slices and cheese sticks around a piece of bread and it was yummy!

• Oct. 13, 2006 - God can use a frog!

Last night we were coming home and it was dark. Our front porch is home to a few tree frogs. The light on at night attracts moths and so the frogs hang out for the meal. I don't mind having the frogs just don't touch me, ewww! My daughter sees a HUGE tree frog as we are unlocking the front door. So the good HS mom in me makes it a science lesson. We get a flashlight and look at it. To back up a bit, animals love my daughter. The cats always lay next to her. Our dearly beloved lab who passed away, would lay at her bedroom door until she fell asleep, so sweet. Anyway, this frog turns around, sees my daughter and decides he likes her and wants to check her out. I knew what was going to happen. I ran away, I didn't even protect my kids! The frog jumps on my daughter, she screams, the frog freaks out and jumps next on my son. More screaming by both kids now. I've ran away because I'm freaking out. My poor husband is trying to take control of this ridiculous scene on our front porch at 10pm! The kids manage to run in, both are crying. My husband is looking for the frog, afraid it was killed or injured in the maddness. The frog is safe, just some frog pee left on the porch. The kids calm down and we are all rolling on the floor laughing.

The next morning, I get our bible study out. Guess what story is for the day. You guessed it, the plagues of Egypt. So we talked about the plague of the frogs. My daughter was especially grossed out due to the previous night's incident. So that morning they wrote wonderful and funny entries in their bible journals.

I think God has a big sense of humor!

• Oct. 1, 2006 - The good life of our turtles

Turtles are now residing at our house! CP was catching lizards outside. She would keep them in a container until they almost die of fear or of starvation. Daddy had to convince her this isn't a good life for lizards, God has a better plan for them. She reluctantly released them into our rain gutter for a better life. So that started "Mommy, I want a lizard for a pet." So off to the friendly neighborhood pet store where you can buy a lizard for the low price of 89.99! Still need a cage, special light, lizard food, and whatever else needed to create a good lizard life. So I convinced her that the turtles for 3.99 would be a better pet. So we bought Brownie and Hulk (Yes, these are know as common turtle names) for 3.99 each. Then we bought the aquarium, turtle food, colorful rocks, a special rock to keep germs away, and a decorative log. All to create the perfect turle life for a low price of.... this is where I say it is priceless! Yeah, right! Anyway here is some pictures of our "priceless" new pets. Oh, did I mention how fun it is to clean the aquarium very week.

• Sep. 13, 2006 - Nile River in Florida!

Today we learned about the Ancient Egyptians. We learned how the farmers used the seasonal flooding of the Nile River to water their crops. So we built our own Nile Rivers and we will flood our river every couple of days. We put grass seeds in the soil so in time we will have grass growing around our own Nile.

• Sep. 5, 2006 - Labor Day

My darling husband surprised us with a little getaway to Orlando, to the kids favorite hotel. We took the kids to Bass Pro Shop. Daddy had as much fun as the kids too. CP and I did a little shopping in the mall. JF met us at the mall and we had lunch together.

Poor CP was knocked down by a another boy at the hotel in the pool. He was playing rough and jumping in the pool. He jumped right on top of her and knocked her underwater and against the wall. I immediately yelled at the boy with a mother's rage. CP was crying. The boy did not even apologize. Where are his manners!

We spent labor day around the house. We ended our day with a picnic in a tent in our living room and classical music in the background. What a nice way to end our weekend!

• Sep. 1, 2006 - Sugar Cube Pyramids!

Today we made sugar cube pyramids! We are studying Ancient Egypt. Did you know if your cat died in ancient Egypt times, you would shave off your eyebrows to show you are mourning your beloved cat. I love my cats but not that much, sorry Oreo and Rosie (our beloved cats). It is funny how our personalities show in our work. My daughter, the free sprirt, easy going just enjoyed the building the pyramid. It didn't matter how symetric it turned out. My son, the thinker is taking his time and has not finished his pyramid yet.
