Tightwad Tuesday - Fence for less than 10 dollars

Posted in MoneyMatters

Time again for Tightwad Tuesday with Canadagirl

Again, being inspired by Sharon Lovejoy,  I got the crazy idea to take this pile of sticks and turn it into A Living Fence.

Where as most people would just see a pile of garbage needed to be hauled to the dump.

We made posts out of them.

Plotted out an area.

Built a fence

And then I planted it with morning glory's and Hollyhock's.  This is what is called A Living Fence.  Stay tuned for more pictures later this summer when it has all grown up.  It should make a nice hedge as well.

The best part is, is that it cost less than 10 dollars!!

Tightwad Tuesday - The Money Saver

Posted in MoneyMatters

Yes, the Money Saver.
This little paper has saved us heaps of money this past year.

We found our piece of land in it and got it much cheaper than the going rate.  It even had a hay shed on it which made it worth much more.
We found our Surbanan in it.
Plus, we advertised our last house in it.

Hurray for the money saver.  Believe me though.  I had spent a lot of time looking through it.  I looked every Thursday for a piece of land for at least the last 3 years.  One has to be a hunter to find the good deal.  Act fast too, it just so happened I was the first person to call on the piece of land that Thursday morning,  other people know the secret too.

Tightwad Tuesday - Taco Seasoning

Posted in MoneyMatters

Taco Seasoning

6 teaspoons Chili powder
41/2 teaspoons cumin
5teaspoons paprika
3 teaspoons onion powder
21/2 teaspoons gralic powder
1/8 to 1/4 teaspoons cayenne pepper

Mix all ingredients, store in air tight container.  Twice as strong as store-bought so use half as much.  About 13 cents per ounce.

Enchilada Sauce

3/4 cup butter
3/4 cup milk
one can tomato sauce
add taco seasoning

make like making gravy and, Waa-Laa, you have enchilada sauce.

Tightwad Tuesday

Posted in MoneyMatters

It's Tightwad Tuesday over at CandaGirl's.  Sorry, I was able to transfer the picture but the button doesn't work yet.                                                                                                         Tightwad Tuesday
I had to think and think and think about something that I do that saves money, which is really quit funny because I am the most frugal person I know., but I realized a lot of what I do have become habits.  This is really a good thing when you think about it.

One thing that I do is use powder milk for all my white sauces, baking, and gravys.  You have to try different brands before you find one that you like.  I have been buying mine through a food co-op called Azure.

This one I just clued into in the last couple months but I have been making my own white sauce instead of using Cream of Mushroom soup.  I just realized that cream of mushroom soup is just a white sauce with mushrooms.  Duh!!  Cream of Chicken - white sauce with chicken boullioun or just add some beef boullioun for a beef flavor.  A simple white sauce is also the base for Mac and Cheese and gravy.   Here's my recipe:

                                                 White sauce recipe

                                                    3/4 cup butter
                                                    3/4 cup flour
                                                     4 to 5 cups milk
salt or some kind of seasoning salt
                                                     add whatever - cheese, chicken

Compared to Cream of mushroom soup this just takes a few dime's ( can you get anything for penny's anymore) to make and it is a lot healthier for you as well.  No MSG and no preservatives.  According to the Tightwad Gazette 8 years ago, it only costs 18 cents.  How much is a can of Cream of Mushroom soup?

For other news, please, go leave a comment for this grieving Mother.
