High Tech Busybodies

In today’s busy society, it seems that we have lost the art of hospitality.  People rarely take time to have company over for an evening of fun.
Because of that, it may be easy to think that the nasty habit of being a busybody has died out too.  After all, First Timothy 5:13 describes a busy body as one who goes from house to house.

On the contrary, I think the busy body is thriving in today’s society.  The only difference is that she has become a high tech busy body.  Instead of going from house to house, she now goes from website to website, from chat room to chat room, from one bulletin board to another.

This verse in First Timothy also tells us that she learns to become an idler.  The dictionary describes an idler as one who is useless, not busy, inactive, moving about aimlessly, and one who wastes.

When we think of a Miss Busy Body’s use of the computer, we can easily picture her as one who does not manage her home well. (Proverbs 31) She spends so much time online that she is not busy taking care of her home.  Inactivity in the home tends to lead to piles of dirty laundry and dirty dishes.  There will be dusty furniture and sticky floors.  There will be unmade beds and piles of clutter.  Things in the home continue to pile up while she continues to wander aimlessly around the Web, soon finding herself tangled in that very web.

I can picture her husband coming home to a disorganized home every night, giving her a disgusted look that says, “What did you do all day?”
I would imagine that there is a lot of bickering in the home because the kids are looking for something, unable to find it because of her lack of managing her home.  I can picture her finally getting around to fixing the evening meal, only to discover that she doesn’t have the necessary ingredients – all because she chose to be online all day, rather than fulfilling the ministry of taking care of her home and family.

We can imagine this high tech lady rising early, not to get into the Word, but to check out her favorite websites.  She convinces herself she will do devotions later, only to see a hot topic arise on a particular board.  She chooses instead to see what juicy discussions take place.  Little does she realize that those morsels of gossip go down into her deepest parts. (Proverbs 18:8)

It is no wonder she soon feels empty, void, barren, and dead inside.  Have you ever felt that way?  These words are the descriptive words used in the Thesaurus to describe one who is idle.

If these words fit how you often feel, could it be that you have become a high tech busy body?  Is it time to turn off the World Wide Web in order to spend time with the Creator of this whole wide world?

• Oct. 1, 2008 - The To-Do List

The To-Do List

As Christians, we can see there are so many scriptures telling us that we have things to do.  Jesus said that if we love Him, we will obey His commands. (Jn. 15)  In the same chapter, He makes it clear that obedience will bring abundant joy to us.  In John 15:4 we are told to remain in Him.  If we remain in Him, He will fill us with His strength so that we are able to do what He tells us to do.

Tit. 3:8 tells us to devote ourselves to prayer.  Col. 4:2,5 also mentions praying, as well as telling us to be watchful and thankful, and to be wise in the way we act toward outsiders, making the most of all opportunities.  Verse 6 tells us to let our conversations be full of grace.  There are times when we just don't know how to answer someone.  Being full of grace will help in those times.
Eph. 4:2 tells us to live a life worthy of the calling we have received.  It goes on to mention that we need to be humble (submissive, unassuming, simple) and gentle, bearing with one another.  Jas. 4:10 and I Pet. 5:6 mention humbling ourselves before the Lord.

I Cor. 15:5 tells us to give ourselves fully to the work of the Lord.  For many of us, that "work" is taking care of our families.  We need to remember that as we do it for them, we are doing it for Christ.

We are called to love our enemies in Mt. 5:44.  In Rom. 12:14 we are told to bless those who persecute us.  This can be very hard, especially when our enemies are sometimes in our own extended family.  The hurt from those betrayals and persecutions can go so deeply into our spirit.

In II Tim. 2:22 we are told to flee the evil desires of youth and to pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace.  II Cor. 7:1 tells us to purify ourselves from all that contaminates our body and spirit.  We are to clothe ourselves with the Lord Jesus, (Rom. 13:14) and live a life worthy of our calling.  (Eph. 4:1)  We are to live as children of light and to find out what pleases our Lord.  (Eph. 5:8, 10)

We are to be made new in the attitudes of our minds, as well as getting rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, brawling, slander, and malice.  Instead, be kind, compassionate, and forgiving.  (Eph. 4:23-32)

Rom. 12 could keep us busy every day, just by itself!  It tells us to offer our bodies as living sacrifices, to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, hate what is evil, cling to what is good.  Keep our spiritual fervor (enthusiasm, passion).  Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.  We are told to share with God's people who are in need, and to be hospitable.  Rejoice with those who are rejoicing and mourn with those who are mourning.  We are to live in harmony with others.

We are to rejoice in the Lord and let our gentleness be evident to those around us.  (Phil. 4:4-5)  Col. 3 tells us to set our minds on things above.  Eph. 6:10-11 tells us to be strong in the Lord and to put on His armor so that we can take our stand against the devil's schemes.  Since we have seen here that we have much to do, I think it is feasible to assume that Satan doesn't want us to get work on this "to-do list."  He will use anything he can to distract us.  It may be phone calls, a lack of sleep, moodiness, hormones, fighting children, financial woes, illness, our own busyness, or even our own selfishness.  That is why it is so important to daily put on the armor of God.

I heard a sermon many years ago by a man who would physically go through the motions of putting on each piece of armor.  Going through the motions, saying the name of armor, and stating what it was for was a good way for him to remember that the battle was not his, but God's.  So many times we struggle in our own strength.  Goliath tried that too, and it got him struck down by a little shepherd boy who knew where to go for the right kind of armor.  As we daily work on our "to-do list," may we also declare to our enemy that we come against him in the Name of the Lord Almighty.  And may God Almighty go before us, lighting our path and giving us victory after victory.

• Oct. 1, 2008 - The Flu

Do You Have the Flu?

As I watched my daughter suffer the effects of the upper respiratory flu, it occurred to me that many of us may also have the flu, only in a spiritual sense.

Does the mention of someone's name cause you to develop a 'fever,' otherwise referred to as fiery anger or the physical results of high blood pressure?  It could be that you are harboring unforgiveness.  Let Dr. Jesus apply Eph. 4:31-32 to your spirit.

Do you awaken with a pounding headache after having fretted about how much you need to get done?  Or are you plagued with worry?  A good dose of Mt. 11:25-34 could cure you of that ailment.

Do you have constant 'vomiting' from your mouth?  We often cringe when we hear it called by its real name: gossip.  A spiritual fast of applying the words in Eph. 4:29 may heal this 'flu' rapidly.

Do you develop a hacking cough when Father asks you to do something which you don't want to do?  I'm referring to those things He's calling you to do, and you cough up excuses similar to those which Moses gave.  Prov. 3:5-6 may go a long way in curing this cough.

Constant worrying can bind us with spiritual 'stomach flu,' giving us awful cramps.  Allow the Lord to give you a shot of His medicine which says to fear not!  Ps. 91:5; Is. 41:10; Heb. 13:5.

Are you bound by the soft porn that is found in soap operas?  Let the Lord rid you of those toxins.  You will soon find yourself declaring the words of Ps. 101:2-3 where is says that we can walk with a blameless heart, setting no vile thing before our eyes.

Are you bound by the virus that is so prevalent in America?  The virus to which I'm referring is that of the love of money and material things.  A healthy diet of Prov. 30:8 could unlock those chains.

Does the thought of a certain individual leave you battling the chills which often accompany the flu?  It could be from the one who took your virginity, then proceeded to flaunt it before the whole school.  Maybe it's the stepfather who abused you repeatedly, or the mother who refused to rescue you from constant abuse.  Maybe the mention of the word 'Father' chills you because your father left you and your mother.  Maybe a betrayal by your best friend has given you the chills.  Whatever it is that causes those awful chills, Jesus wants to bestow on you a beautiful crown, giving you beauty for your ashes, and a garment of praise instead of the heaviness which has plagued you for years.  He wants to make you into an oak of righteousness, to display His splendor.  Is. 61:3  Where you were once so weak, His healing touch can make you into a strong oak tree, able to withstand anything past 'viruses' try to dredge up against you.

Do you need to make an appointment with the Dr. Jesus?
