Saturday, June 2, 2007 - May 27
My oldest son surprised us Sunday by inviting us to a cookout at Lansford Canal State Park. It was a beautiful day. He supplied all the food (though I did make a pan of S’mores Brownies) and waited on us hand and foot. He wouldn’t let us do anything. The other kids fished while he made lunch. After dinner we took a 3-mile hike along the Catawba River and the old canals. Lansford has an interesting history. The canals were completed in 1823 and were used to transport goods from the Piedmont to the Charleston and other southern cities. It was also part of the Revolutionary War history because both Cornwallis and Sumter used it to cross before and after major battles. You can visit the South Carolina Department of Archives and History or At Home in South Carolina or the South Carolina State Parks Website to learn more. We were very lucky to get to see the Rocky Shoals Spider Lilies still in bloom. It was a wonderful time spent with my kids and I will treasure the day.

Saturday, June 2, 2007 - May 25 & 26 Skate Show
May 25 and 26th was the kids 60’s, 70’s and 80’s Ice Skating Show. Even though they had had only 5 lessons they chose to participate. And to help support the home school program, so did 2 other moms and I. One of the moms had just learned to skate herself. We all did well and no one fell. I was very proud of my children. The other 3 skaters have been skating for a while and could do spins and jumps and other fancy moves. My daughter, who 5 weeks ago was hugging the wall, did bunny hops and one foot glides. My 6 -foot tall son chose to do what I call scissor swizzles. All their moves were done while holding a blown-up ball of the world to the song “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing” Both of the kids are now hooked on skating and want to continue learning. We’ll be adding this to our schedule. I think it’ll be good for them. As long as they are enjoying themselves, we will continue. Here is the movie of their routine. This was done the second night and my son forgot what he was doing, but you get the idea. (We are the tallest people in the group.)
