Thursday, June 12, 2008 - Prayers for Little Creek Scout Camp

I had something else planned to post, but it can wait.  As part of my morning routine I usually watch a bit of morning news.  This morning I was brought to tears by the tragedy in Blencoe, Iowa at the Little Creek Scout Camp.  If you haven’t already heard this camp was holding a leadership training camp when, without warning, a tornado hit. At this writing 4 people were killed and many others injured.  There were a couple of stories of acts of bravery preformed by the boys and I’m sure will hear more.  I think they were all very brave.  As a mother of scouts for so many years, I know how important these camping trips are to these boys.  Not only do they have a great time but they also learn valuable life skills.  I think of my own sons and how I would feel if they were in the same situation. My heart and my prayers go out to those boys and their families and I know you join me in agreement while they go through the healing process.

Tuesday, April 1, 2008 - My E-Copybook

I am so excited.  The Old Schoolhouse Store is carrying some of my e-books.  There will be 3 copybooks, one in manuscript, one for transitional manuscript, and the third for cursive.  The title of the 72-page copybook is “Biblical Character Traits to Learn and to Live” and features 60 favorable character traits along with a King James passage to copy to reinforce the trait.  There is also a place for the student to illustrate the passage.  I decided to make these books in black and white because, although I love the colorful books out there, I prefer to print things in black and white to save on the cost of ink.  As of last night they have only the transitional manuscript book posted but it won’t be long before the other two will be listed.   I have been using it for a few years with my own children.  We do one passage a week.  We first read over the passage, and then we discuss it.  Sometimes we look it up in other versions of the Bible to get another wording.  Then the kids copy the passage in their best handwriting and draw a picture to show they understand the trait.  Then they have a week to memorize it.  They used to take the whole week getting the passage down, but as they’ve grown older, it has become a whole lot easier.  If you are looking for a copybook that could be used not only for handwriting practice but also for Biblical study and memory work, this may be for you.

Here is an example of the passage we used last week:

If you are interested, please swing by the Old Schoolhouse Store.  My products are under Proverbs 22:6 Academy.

BTW:  If you have created something you think others might be able to use be sure to contact Heidi.  She has been totally awesome and encouraging to me.  All the staff at The Old Schoolhouse has been great walking me through the whole process.

Monday, March 24, 2008 - Rosetta Stone Giveaway

This is an absolutely fabulous opportunity. Jeneric Jeneralities is sponsoring a giveaway for a Rosetta Stone package.  I've had the opportunity to preview this system when I was teaching and I can tell you it is a great program.  I would simply love to have the Spanish program for my son who will be entering HS next year.  This would be an answer to prayer for sure.

Rosetta Stone has been the #1 foreign language curriculum among homeschoolers for a while -- next week they are unleashing a brand new curriculum, and you can WIN the *all new* Rosetta Stone Homeschool Version 3… FOR FREE

This is a $219 program (and believe me it's worth every penny!) and the winner gets to pick from any of these 14 languages: Spanish (Spain or Latin America), English (American or British), Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Irish, Hebrew, or Russian.

This will also include a headset with microphone, and students will participate in lifelike conversations and actually produce language to advance through the program.  Rosetta Stone still incorporates listening, reading and writing as well, in addition to speaking.  Many homeschoolers requested grammar and vocabulary exercises, and with Rosetta Stone Homeschool Version 3, they're included!  For parents, the new Parent Administrative Tools are integrated into the program and allow parents to easily enroll students in any of 12 predetermined lesson plans, monitor student progress, and view and print reports.

To win this most excellent program -- in the language of your choice -- copy these (blue) paragraphs and post it in (or as) your next blog post -- then to enter the contest, go to the original contest page HERE: http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/JenIG/501132/  and leave a comment with the link showing where you blogged about it.  And please make sure the link works to get back to the original contest page when you post it.  And good luck!  The winner will be picked randomly on March 26, and will be notified thru the link they left to their blog pg.   And if you have more than one blog, you can post them and enter those separately for more chances to win.   Yay for free stuff!

Thursday, March 13, 2008 - Currclick and The Old Schoolhouse News

There are a couple of things that I wanted to let you know about if you haven’t already heard about them.  If you noticed the banner at the top of my page, the Homeschool E-store has officially changed its name to Currclick.  In addition to offering a huge selection of e-books, it has pumped up its website a bit.  You can now create a wish list to save those books that you are thinking about purchasing and can send that wish list to friends and family.  They have also added a preview feature on some products that gives you a page-by-page look at the book you are interested in.  During Currclick’s grand opening you will get a 10% account credit on every purchase.  If you haven’t tried e-books yet, this is a great opportunity to see what the buzz is all about.

Also, if you have wanted to get the Old Schoolhouse Magazine, they are now offering a digital form of the magazine at a substantial savings.  Until the 18th, you can purchase a subscription to the e-zine for only $10.95.  From 3/19-3/25, the cost is only $12.95, 3/26-4/2, $14.95, and 4/3-4/8, $16.95.  This is a great opportunity to get the magazine.  The e-zine includes the ability to print articles and has click able direct links to advertisers and website references.  I was quick to jump on this opportunity and within minutes of placing my order was perusing the pages of the fall issue.  In addition to the wonderful savings you will receive various free gifts.  If The Old Schoolhouse isn’t already part of your homeschooling resources, this is a wonderful time to try it out.  On a side note, many contributors of the articles have blogs here at homeschollblogger.

These are great opportunities to try new things at great savings.

Also I just joined another group of homeschooling folk at The Homeschool Lounge.  Found out about it at Reviews by Heidi.  It looks interesting so here’s another web stop you may want to check out.

And now onto the Award:

Mom of Ned at a Place Called Home has honored me with this award

I appreciate her thinking my space here in cyberworld is worthy of being called ‘Excellent’.

The rules that accompany this award are that By accepting this Excellent Blog Award, you have to award it to 10 more people whose blogs you find Excellent Award worthy. You can give it to as many people as you want but please award at least 10. Thank you out there for having such great blogs and being such great friends! You deserve this! Feel free to award people who have already been awarded…

If you are on my friends list you are all deserving of this award. I read so many wonderful blogs that it seems hard to name only 10.  Some of these have already received this award, but should be mentioned again. Along with reciprocating to A Place Called Home I would like to pass this award onto (in no particular order):

Tuesday, February 5, 2008 - Great Backyard Bird Count

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

11th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count

February 15 – 18, 2008

Count for Fun, Count for the Future!

If you enjoy watching the birds in your yard or are doing a bird study, this is fun activity for everyone.  It is simple and free and you could even win some great bird related prizes.  This will be the third year that we have participated in the bird count.  Basically all you have to do is select an area to watch, count the birds that come to that area in a 15 minute timeframe, separate the count by bird type, and then report your results.

Swing by the Great Backyard Bird Count website for all the details.  There are lists of birds from your area to print out to help with your count reporting, a ‘Learn about Birds’ section with a ton of helpful links for identification and bird watching tips.  There is even a great page especially for kids.  By participating in the count you are a valuable resource to scientists in their study of birds.  We just do it because it’s fun and we enjoy God’s creation.

Tuesday, November 13, 2007 - Card to Our Soldiers

Save the stamp.  I received an e-mail the other day that so many may have already received.  It read:

In anticipation of the coming season I felt this was a suggestion worth passing along:
When doing your Christmas cards this year, take one card and send it to this address:

(The address given here)

If we pass this on and everyone sends one card, think of how many cards these people who have sacrificed so much would get.

I thought this would be an great idea for the kids to get involved with, but upon further investigation I found the following information:

One of the results of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 is that the U.S. Postal Service will not deliver mail addressed to "Any Service Member," "A Recovering American Soldier," or any similar generic addressee. This is to protect our American servicemen and women. According to a statement dated November 8, 2007, the Walter Reed Army Medical Center will not accept such mail at its facility (though mail addressed to specific individuals will still go through).

Please go to the Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital website to read the full statement.

If you are interested in sending a card or letter to a service member check out this page at America Supports You for an extensive list of ways to show your appreciation.  And as always keep our brave men and women who serve our country and their families in your thoughts and prayers every day.
