Thursday, March 20, 2008 - Welcome Spring
Butterfly wings flutter by,
As bright sunshine fills the sky.
Daffodils dance in the morning dew.
Spring parades its perfect hue.
The dogwood sways to the music of spring.
The robin calls out to everything.
Wake up, Wake up, you sleepy world.
The flag of spring has unfurled.
With a kiss of the sun it surrounds the day,
The old clothes of winter have fallen away.
In a garment of green the earth welcomes in,
A season of time to begin again.

Tuesday, March 11, 2008 - Song of Praise
Lift up your heart in worship,
Raise your voice in praise,
No need for words,
Your song will be heard,
In the ears of the Ancient of Days.
Shout from a soul wide open,
Dance with the feet of a king,
Reach out for Him,
Release your sin,
Receive the new life He will bring.
Trust in the strength of your faith,
Lean on His love so true,
Forever set free,
Opened eyes to see,
The cross paid the debt that was due.
So sing a song of gladness,
Rejoice in the open door,
No longer lost,
He paid the cost,
A slave to sin no more.

Thursday, January 3, 2008 - A Better You
Another year has just begun,
With a desire to start a new,
To change the things you feel the need,
Will make a better you.
Stronger bones and sharper minds,
Bad habits to break for good,
In everything, to seek Him first,
As we always should.
Reach out your hand, embrace the day,
For each one is brand new,
Look to Him who knows you best.
It will make a better you.

Tuesday, December 18, 2007 - Why I Enjoy Homeschooling

01Charger is hosting one of the 12 Blogs of Christmas contests. Her contest is to write an essay or poem about what you enjoy most about homeschooling. If you would like to enter go over to her blog for all the rules.

Here is my entry.
The alarm goes off, it’s morning again.
Time to get ready for school.
Breakfast is made and we sit down to eat,
Togetherness is our fuel.
We dress as we like in slippers or socks,
No need to rush out the door,
We take each day as a blessing from God,
A gift and so much more.
Our studies begin with a prayer and a verse,
As we seek His fine direction.
Then we delve into math, science and more,
Taking the time for correction.
How lucky we are to explore what we want,
To learn more than they say we need,
To take the time to get it just right,
In order for us to succeed.
Some days we spend hours on the difficult things,
Through trail and error we learn,
We are free to seek out what interests us most,
Knowledge we get in return.
Beyond the books and the classroom walls,
The world is an open door,
Just waiting for us to step out into,
Calling for us to explore.
Sometimes the role of teacher and student
Is often not clear to see,
I wouldn’t have it any other way,
Homeschool is right for me.
Together we travel down the road of discovery,
I can’t think of anything better.
Living and learning and seeking His ways,
And doing it all together.

Monday, December 17, 2007 - Christmas Reason
So much to do,
So little time,
I often think,
I’ll lose my mind.
Cookies to bake,
Gifts to buy,
Have we forgotten,
The reason why?
Presents to wrap,
Boxes to send,
The crazy mad rush,
For the list to end.
Decorations to hang,
Houses to clean,
Have we forgotten,
What it really means?
Take a deep breath,
Then let it out,
Think of the reason,
It’s all about.
The gifts, the glitter,
The family and friends,
What does it mean,
In the very end?
Forget the ribbons,
Paper and bows,
Turn all your thoughts,
Toward where blessings flow.
Straight from heaven,
Into our sight,
The very real reason
We celebrate this night.
Slow yourself down,
Take time to see,
What matters most,
Beyond the tree.
A babe born of us,
Flesh and bone,
Have you let Him,
Enter your home?
A gift not wrapped,
And totally free,
Especially chosen,
For you and me.
Redemption, Salvation,
No greater love,
The reason we rejoice,
Came from above.
So forget the worry,
To get it all done,
Today we rejoice,
In the birth of His Son.

Tuesday, December 4, 2007 - I Wonder
I wrote this poem for last year’s family newsletter that we send out each Christmas.
It is one of my very favorites.
I wonder what it was like,
In a field so far away,
To hear the angels singing,
On that first Christmas day.
I wonder what it was like,
Traveling far from home,
To give birth to a baby,
That could never be my own.
I wonder what it was like,
To have no place to rest,
To know my heavenly Father,
Was giving us His best.
I wonder what it was like,
To be a wandering king,
To bow before the child,
Who would give us everything.
I wonder what it was like,
Among those who came to see,
Laying in a manger,
The one to set us free.
I wonder what it was like,
Those many years ago,
To see how much He loved us,
And just how far He’d go.

Wednesday, October 24, 2007 - Seeking Him
With outstretched arms,
I reach for you,
To ease my weary mind,
To take the burdens
of the day,
And leave them all behind.
With childlike vision,
I search for you,
To open up my eyes,
To show me all you
Have for me
And lead me to the prize.
With gladdened heart
I sing to you
To praise your work in me
To rejoice in all
You have done
To set my spirit free

Monday, October 8, 2007 - Columbus
I wrote this 2004 to help my kids remember the events of Columbus's voyages. I built it upon the grade school rhyme.
In fourteen hundred ninety-two,
Columbus sailed the ocean blue,
Queen Isabella paid the way,
To open up a new gateway.
On the Santa Maria Columbus sailed,
The Nina, the Pinta beside him trailed.
Ninety men between the three,
All set sail for the open sea.
Seventy days without sight of land,
The crew grew weary and anger began,
At two a.m. on the twelfth of October,
Columbus’s voyage was finally over.
Land was found and anchors set,
On a day he would never forget.
Three times more he would again set sail,
Columbus refused to believe he failed.
Though India he did not find,
He changed the world for all time.

Tuesday, September 11, 2007 - In Memory of September 11
Words can never be used to describe
The horror of that day
The sadness felt across the land
The feeling of dismay
In just a few short seconds
The world we knew had changed
Nothing will ever be the same
It has all became so strange.
Heroes sprang to life that day
Everyday souls gave all
Becoming extraordinary examples,
Of those who heed the call.
Many lives have left our own,
Their memory lingers still,
But through it all our faith remains
And it always will.
Our enemies my break our bones,
And tumble down our wall,
But our strength comes straight from Him
And He will conquer all.

Wednesday, August 15, 2007 - Our Learning Tool
Books and paper, pencils and pens,
Wait for us as school begins.
Math and Science, History and more
So much to learn for us to soar.
But of all the things there are to do,
One thing helps us make it through.
Start each day with prayer and praise.
Make God the center of our days.
For in everything we live and learn,
He should be our first concern.
For in everything that we are taught,
Without His grace it’s all for naught.
So off to class we will go
To learn the things we need to know
To carry out His wondrous plan
He had for us when time began.

Wednesday, August 1, 2007 - One Voice
One small voice cried out in the dark,
Who will hear my plea?
Through tears and fears,
And endless years,
Who will set me free?
One frail voice called into the night,
Who will heal my pain?
And take away,
The cares of the day,
And make me whole again?
One grim voice whispered hopelessly,
Who will heed my cry?
Is anyone there?
Does anyone care?
On whom can I rely?
One still voice gently answered,
Open up your heart.
Let go of sin,
And let Me in,
I’ve been here from the start.
One sweet voice heard so clear,
My child, rely on Me.
I’ll heal your pain,
Make you whole again,
I’m here to set you free.
One strong voice speaks to the heart,
Who will make the choice?
To live in strife,
Or have new life,
To answer the One Voice.

Thursday, July 26, 2007 - His Garden
Sweet fragrant smells fill the air,
Colors blooming everywhere,
Life calls out for all to see,
The splendor of His majesty.
Walk slowly through the garden gates,
For among your steps His beauty waits,
Behold all that He has given you,
Wonders dressed in every hue.
Look not upon the thorns and weeds,
But see the greatness of His seeds,
Planted in the heart of man
Grown according to His plan.
Reap the harvest of His world,
As each new day becomes unfurled.
Each brilliant bloom, every tiny grain,
Are the people and places, the joy and the pain.

Wednesday, July 4, 2007 - Yesterday's Summer
My mind turns back,
To the summer days,
Of my childhood years ago,
To the baseball games,
Fireman’s picnics,
Cornfields all in a row.
I can still feel,
The warmth of the breeze,
Kissing at my skin,
As we rode our bikes,
Around the block,
Greeting neighbors with a grin.
As the sprinklers rained,
Their drops of sunshine,
Upon the hungry ground,
I hear the splashing,
Of tiny feet,
No greater fun was found.
The darkness of,
The summer sky,
Was a treasure to behold,
Filled with fireworks,
And bright fireflies,
And stories to be told.
Each time I smell,
Freshly cut grass,
Its sweetness takes me away,
To family and friends,
We used to know,
In the summers of yesterday.

Friday, June 15, 2007 - Daddy's Arms

Your arms cradled me
When I was born
With love and lullabies.
They held my hand
As I learned to walk
And comforted my cries.
They wrapped me up
In all your strength.
They never let me fall.
I always knew
That you were there
To answer my every call.
With open arms
You let me grow
And encouraged me to fly.
With wings outstretched
You let me soar
And helped me reach the sky.
They gave to me
My every need
And helped along the way.
With gentle wisdom
They guided me
To who I am today.
And even now
As time has gone
I often reach out to you.
For the comfort of
My Daddy’s arms
Will always see me through.

Thursday, June 14, 2007 - Our Flag

All across America,
From sea to shining sea,
There waves a mighty symbol,
Proclaiming liberty.
Her colors bold and brilliant,
Never may they fade.
Reminding all who see her,
The price that has been paid.
May all who look upon her,
Turn their thoughts to prayer,
For all the gifts she stands for,
For people everywhere.
Through all the trails of war and peace,
Silently she calls,
Freedom, truth and justice,
And liberty for all.

Tuesday, June 5, 2007 - Mom Celebration
Cooking, cleaning, washing the floor,
Chores to do and so much more.
Ballgames, lessons, mail to read,
A quiet vacation is what I need.
Bills to pay, errands to run.
Making time for just plain fun.
Places to go, appointments to keep,
Boy, I could use a little sleep.
Nights too short, days too long,
Give me strength to be strong.
For everything I have to do,
Someday soon I will be through.
The kids will grow and move away,
And then I’ll dream of yesterday.
So vacation and sleep they can wait.
Because today as ‘Mom’ I celebrate.

Friday, May 25, 2007 - In a Soldier's Memory
In memory of,
The soldier tall,
Who fought for our freedoms,
Who answered the call,
Who gave of himself,
Without thought to his need,
Whose focus was on,
Those that he freed.
Let us take the time,
To think on him,
Who gave us everything,
Life and limb.
Remember with love,
All that was sacrificed,
And forget not what,
He most prized.
Liberty and freedom,
For one and for all.
Thank-you dear soldier,
Who answered the call.

Friday, May 11, 2007 - Mother
What is a mother?
Can words describe?
All that she is
From the inside
She is strength and hope
With eyes that see
Everything good
Inside of me
She is warmth and grace,
With arms that hold
All through the night
When life gets cold.
She is wisdom and care
In all she taught
What I shouldn’t
What I ought.
She is laughter and joy
With words she speaks
She lifts me up
When I am weak.
She is hours of prayer
With tender heart
Wanting the best
From the start.
She is all the things
I want to be
A mother is love
Eternally.

Wednesday, May 2, 2007 - Seeing God
The beauty of God surrounds me,
His hand is in all I see,
His majesty is heard,
In the song of the bird,
And the buzzing of the bee.
The wonder of God is everywhere,
His awesome power fills the air,
From the lightning flash,
To the thunder crash,
I feel His presence there.
High as the sky, low as the earth,
He provided us all with a rebirth,
The old is new,
He did it for you,
To show us of our worth.
The joy of God is everyday,
Our debt of sin He did repay,
Every breath I take,
Every step I make,
His mercy paves the way.
The love of God is all around,
His voice is every sound,
In His amazing grace,
We can see His face,
If we look He can be found.
