May. 5, 2008 - Tightwad Tuesday - Recipes for Anti-perspirant & Deoderant
Anti-perspirant spray
1 c. water
1-1/2 t. alum powder (very inexpensive and can be found at the health food store)
¼ c. rubbing alcohol
Mix all ingredients and stir well until the alum is dissolved. Pour into a pump spray bottle.
Yield: 10 ounces
Natural Deodorant Cream
¼ c. vegetable shortening
1 T. cornstarch
1/8 t. tincture of benzoin (found this at one local pharmacy - Walgreens and it costs about $7.50 for a small bottle, but it will last you many years.)
1 t. fragrance, optional
Blend all ingredients until smooth. Place in a clean jar with a lid. To use: Rub a small amount of the cream under your arms.
Yield: 3 ounces
I have used both of these and they work very well, but I prefer to use the first recipe.

I am going to make the first one for sure, I have ALL the ingredients. Do you think you can add a few drops of essential oils to the first recipe? I have learned TONS from you. Thank you so much. I am so blessed by Tightwad Tuesdays. You make this so fun.
Blessings and ((hugs)) my SSiC

Mary, I don't know why you couldn't add some essential oil to it.
And thank YOU for hosting this blessing! My passion is to help and encourage women in a spiritual sense, but I also have a passion to help them in practical things, like being frugal. You have made it much easier for me to fulfill the vision for why I wanted to start blogging.
So, I guess we are like iron sharpening iron! :-)

I had forgotten about the deodorant recipe. My mom used to make that. Thanks for sharing it.

I think I have a spare pump sprayer from pampered chef laying around. Wonder if that would work? I have been trying to figure out a way to find deoderant that doesn't have aluminum in it...

As long as your pump spray bottle isn't the kind for foamy soap, it should be fine.
