Sep. 29, 2009 - Looking at the Big Picture

A friend of mine posted this on another board I visit:
"I buy a LOT of groceries, so I've priced and pinched a LOT.  A dime on butter is a big savings to me over a year when I buy 3 lbs a week and I've never seen the quality of my butter to be less than the other stores when there was a sale.  Actually, once their butter was not dyed nicely and scared the children off at toast time.  And, 20 cents a gallon less on milk is over 60 dollars a year savings, plus I don't have to watch for sales...that is BIG for me!"
Her comment got me to thinking about looking at the "big picture."  I purchase our bread from a bread store.  At a typical grocery store, it would cost me at least $2.50-$3.89 per loaf.  If we purchase one loaf a week, at .89 a loaf, our yearly savings is $83.72-$156 per year, depending on the type of bread we buy.  And that doesn't even include the sandwich buns and hot dog buns I buy for only .79 each!  We are easily saving nearly $150 a year when you factor all of our bread into the equation.
What about milk?  Everyone likes to purchase it on sale.  If we get 2 gallons of milk each week, at .50 off the normal price, we will save $52.00 a year.

Sometimes we forget to look at the big picture when we purchase our groceries.  By being diligent at trying to save $ on groceries, we give ourselves a "raise" because it leaves more money in our pocket.

It almost becomes a game trying to find that lowest price, doesn't it? I did a jig out of the grocery store yesterday because I purchased about 18 pounds of meat for $21 - and saved $38+ because I purchased it on deep discount sale. *Love* the 'grocery game, lol!

Thanks for sharing!

Yes, just like I have said in the past...Do your math ! And you will see how all those little things DO matter and add up. Also Iike I have said that with all the ways that I can find to save money it's like I am giving my hubby a raise. We have more money to use in other needed areas. Yes the BIG picture is soooooooo very important to see.

Blessings in Him<><

That's so true...I don't always want to work for a nickel here, a dime there, because of the time involved. But when you add it up over a year, it DOES make a difference!

It's really hard to cut the groceries, as the prices are goin up..
but I decide to choose the brands that are at "special offer" price, so I am no longer loyal to a certain brand...
I pick the brands with the "right" prices for our budget
