A Glimpse Into Our Homeschooling Life ...

~~And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.~~ Isaiah 54:13, KJV ~~

About Me:

This is a place for me to write about what we are doing in our homeschooling. I may add more than just homeschooling stuff, but for the most part ..... this is a glimpse into our homeschooling life.

Real life science?
Today while the kids were doing math, Charlotte was startled when a Chickadee hit her window - by the time I got to the window, both kids had their faces pressed up against it watching that little Chickadee.  They both decided that they were going to head outside and check out this tiny bird - I was keeping an eye on it from inside the house ... where I was warm, lol.

Charlotte informed me that it hit the window with its chest and it was now laying face down on the ground - I could see its body moving with each breath that it was taking, so I knew that it was still alive.  By the time the kids had gotten outside to where the Chickadee was laying, it had raised its head and was kind of slowly looking around.  I figured that it was going to be fine, that it had just dazed itself and needed a bit of time to get things figured out.  While the kids were outside watching the bird, they both noticed that it had a bug held tightly in its beak - even smacking into the window did not dislodge it from its mouth.

The kids were outside for about 5 minutes, watching the Chickadee, before they decided that it was getting rather chilly (they had raced outside without bothering to put coats on), so, back inside they came and hustled over to the window so that we could observe it from the warmth of the house.  While we were watching from the window, both the kids were telling me things that they had noticed about the Chickadee - it has very tiny little eyes that can hardly be seen because they are 'hid' in the black cap that it wears, you can see the shading in the feathers when you look at the different colored feathers (black to white to cream/tan), its wing feathers don't look as soft as its body feathers.

In total, it took about 10 or 15 minutes from the time it hit the window to the time it finally flew up into the trees - there was a huge cheer from the kids when they actually got to watch the Chickadee stand up, frantically look around (as if it had just processed where it was) and then fly up into a nearby tree.  I'm just making a guess, but I think I know what today's Read & Report is going to be on ..... hmmmmm, maybe I better see if I can round up some books from our library on this subject.

I was crossing my fingers as I read, hoping the poor little bird was going to be okay and that this wasn't going to turn into a science disection type experiment story LOL ....heh. Glad the bird made it, and what an awesome thing for the kids to get a look up close like that! :-)
