Today was a fun day! Matthew turned 6 years old today. To see my tribute to my NICU graduate, look at the previous post to this one. Since it was also Father's Day, we spent the day honoring Thomas. The kids made cards for him, along with coupons. He can't wait to have some help with the yard work! I sure do love you, Thomas and I'm blessed to watch you with our kids. You're a wonderful Daddy and we're happy to have a life with you! I showed Matthew his birth photos and NICU photos. As he gets older, he understands more of his story. Even as a little child, though, he amazed me with comments on things he remembered. For instance, when he was the Ambassador Child for March of Dimes, we were guest speakers at a ministry luncheon. He was about 3 1/2 at the time. I had always told him that Jesus healed him when he was a baby. I didn't get into details about the number of IV's he had, the tests that were run, the pain involved, etc. Anyway, while we were speaking to our audience, our conversation went something like this. Me: "Matthew, what did Jesus do for you when you were in NICU?" Matthew: "He comforted me." (I was expecting him to say that Jesus healed him, since that's what he usually said.) Me: "Matthew, what else did Jesus do for you?" Matthew: "He protected me." (By now I was a crying mess. It hit me that Jesus was very real and very present to Matthew while he was a newborn who was unable to comprehend the pain and agony associated with getting hundreds of IV's, being intubated, etc.) Me: "Matthew, what else did Jesus do for you?" Matthew: "He healed me!" He was so innocent, yet excited, about what God had done for him that all of us were momentarily speechless. It was a good thing that plenty of Kleenex was handy that afternoon! So tonight as I was tucking Matthew in bed I said, "I'm so glad that you're here with us, Matthew. I hope your 6th birthday was fun. Tomorrow is your party and it's going to be so nice to watch you play with your friends." He hugged me really tight when I kissed him goodnight and said, "Mommy, I'm glad God held on to me when I was a baby. How come He's never let go?" I said, "He loves you so much that He'll never let go of you." Then I hugged him even tighter and softly sang this song that came to my mind. It was "You Never Let Go" by Matt Redman. I'm glad my big boy still loves to be sung to. And I'm even more glad that out of the mouth of my child comes profound sayings ~ sayings on which I can reflect and rejoice. After our song, I prayed these words over him. "Thank you, Jesus, that you've never let go of Matthew. Thank you for being right there with him when I was helpless to do anything for him. Thank you for being his comforter, protector and healer. Thank you for sending this precious boy into my heart. Watch over him as he grows. Guide him when his path is rough. Bless him with many more years and fun birthdays. In the name of Jesus, Amen." Here's the song by Matt Redman titled "You Never Let Go" that I sang to Matthew tonight. |
