~ Not much going on today ~

Posted in Ramblings
Today has been pretty uneventful.  We got out lessons done in good time.  I even had a read aloud time with the kids working on different craft type projects while I read.  It was the first time we've done that.  It worked out pretty good.  I will have to try that again sometime.

I'm just about set on what I'm going to order for curriculum.  I'm only stuck with Sarah's language arts.  Not that I don't know what I want, I want Character Quality Language Arts, its just that I want to get 7th grade for next year, but I don't know what to have her finish this year.  I guess we'll go back to the Abeka and she can finish that.  I just don't have enough money to buy two years worth of curriculum.  So I guess we'll go back to the way it was.  Neither of us are too thrilled about that, but with the lack of finances, its all we can do.  I guess I could start her on 7th grade now, but then she'll be finished this time next year.  As much as we like buying our curriculum this time of year, I still like their grade changes (when they go to the next grade) to be in August.  Its easier for me to follow that way.  So I don't want the rest of her subjects to change in August, except for language arts.  So unless the Lord shows me something different, we'll order the 7th grade for next year, and go back to what we were doing to finish out this year.  But that does make me wonder.  Does everyone out there change their grade levels in the fall like public schools do?  Or do you do something different.  Just wondering.

We are still cold, but I am thoroughly enjoying the sunlight.  We've been overcast and cloudy for the last few weeks.  But this past week we've had clear skies and beautiful sunlight.  Having such clear skies lets the cold in, but I will take that, because I like the sun.  Of course I would prefer warm and clear sunny skies, but this is what we have.  So I'm doing my best to enjoy that.

So like I said, not much going on.  I guess thats a good thing.  Oh, I need some good sites that sell used homeschool books.  I know I could try Ebay, but I know there are a few more.  I was just wondering if anyone knew of some good ones.  Thanks.

Decisions, decisions. If you're asking for opinions, I'll give mine. If not, ignore the next sentences and I'm sure that whatever you decide will work well. I would probably go ahead and start the 7th grade book now, and take a year and a half to finish it. It would give you time to make sure she has a complete understanding of the material without being rushed to get through it in 180 days. Just a thought.

Not much going on here, too. The rest of the week we are home except for Karate, but I don't drive tomorrow, so I can stay home! I pray you will have a way to get the books you need at the price you need, too. Good night.

Hi Joann. I am glad that things have been uneventful for you! We do start the next grade officially in the fall. Math and reading are the exception. Each boy moves at his own pace through these subjects and "moves on" whenever they are ready. I order curriculum as needed. Have you ever perused the sale and swap forum at The Well Trained Mind website? I just paid less than half for my oldest son's science for next year. Here is the site:

Have a great day.

We change grades in the fall too. Have you thought about using this time for something like creative writing or something? I know it can be nerve wracking stepping outside of the book, but if you think she could handle 7th grade English right now any ways, it really doesn't sound like she needs to finish the Abeka book.

I think Lynn has something there. I know there is so much you can do with out a curriculum. Do you have the Charlotte Mason Compainion ? You can do all kinds of narrations from books that she is reading instead of a curriculum. I did that for years.

First of all, it is nice to know I'm not the only person who works on ordering next year's books this time of year. My other homeschool friends think I am some crazy super-mom. But spring and summer are way too busy for me to think about curriculum. This time of year is generally quieter, and there is more money flow for us. So I like to do it now too. Thanks for making me feel like I am not crazy.

Secondly, I don't think you should force yourself and your daughter to do the Abeka book. I would do either of the other suggestions...start the 7th grade book now, or do something different for the rest of the year.
