~ All but the kitchen sink ~

Posted in Family
We have had an interesting weekend.  Friday night Paul got home early, we ate some dinner and then we went out for a bit.  Paulie had saved up lots of his money and Sarah gave same money too and they bought the new Wii game, Mario Kart with a steering wheel.  Then Paul and I paid for a second steering wheel.  Oh, of course, since we were at the mall we pick up some Starbucks decafs, yum.  That game is so much fun.  We have been playing it all weekend.  You can play across the internet, so we've been playing with Paul's brother in Illinois.  We have taken out video games during the school week, it was too much of a distraction for Paulie, so after today we'll take a break for a bit.  But we all take turns driving in races and winning trophies.  It's truly been a fun family play weekend.

Saturday started out normal enough, Paul had to mow the lawn, I had some outside work to do too.  So we all went outside.  It's been in the 80's here the past few days, which means we've pulled out the shorts and tank tops.  Of course we'll be in the 50's in a few days.    Anyway, I was folding up some lawn chairs to bring them into the garage so the sprinkler system wouldn't soak them, and I felt that familiar twinge in my back.    Of course, I kept working, but now I'm finding I have to sit more and relax my back.  It's not too bad, but I probably should have come in when I first felt it, oh well.

After I finished outside, I got cleaned up and then I started doing some things in the kitchen.  I ran the garbage disposal and as it was running yucky water started coming up the other side of the sink.    We don't use the disposal a whole lot, it's always been a little quirky since we moved in, but the landlord never said not to use it, so we've learned how to work with it and have been using it a bit more.  So now we can tell the the disposal isn't fully working, and we have a plug somewhere.  We don't like using Drano or any chemicals like that, we just like pouring very hot water down the drain.  So we worked with running the disposal, pouring hot water down the drain, and it seemed to slowly be working.  Until we looked under the sink and saw that the pipe was leaking.    At this point we call the landlord.  He's always said to not do any major fixes in the house because he has his own plumbers, electricians etc...  I leave a message that it's a slow drain, because at that point it was still draining.  Then it just stopped, it wouldn't drain anymore.  So Paul calls him back to let him know it's a bit worse than we thought.  He answered this time and told Paul he was on vacation, ok not too bad, and his plumber was with him!    Oh, that's good.  I guess they are all good friends and go on family vacations together.  So no plumber until Monday, nice.

I had just finished cutting up ham to freeze and separating my pasta sauce to freeze, plus another pan from what I had made lunch in.  The sink wasn't draining at all, and we couldn't leave these pans for two or more days.  So what do we do?  We all head to the bathroom and wash the pans in the bathtub.    We only had a few glasses and such in the dishwasher, which we can't use either, so we've left those for now.  We rinse them really well, so it's not like the dishwasher is stinking or anything, so they can sit in there for a few days.  But we decided that was the last of the dishes we wanted to use.  I ran out and got some plastic forks and cups.  We already had paper plates, and we have lots of frozen, fast food type stuff in the freezer, so we have enough to eat.  We did splurge today and get some McD's for lunch.  The kids liked that.  And as much of a pain as this is, and it won't be looked at until tomorrow and I'm praying its an easy fix, I am blessed.  Our toilets, showers and bathroom sinks still work and that is a blessing.  I can deal with no kitchen sink, eating off of paper products and washing dishes in a bathtub if needed.  But having no toilet or water at all in the house would be so much worse.  So it's not all that bad.

I'm resting my back as much as possible and playing some Wii too.  I can sit on the couch with the steering wheel so it's nice.    This would be a good time for my laptop, since I can't sit at the desk for long periods of time, but oh well.  I have some crafts and reading to keep me busy, along with watching everyone play Wii.  I'm praying tomorrow is a quick and easy fix with the kitchen sink.  It is my cleaning day, so I'm going to try and clean while the sink is getting worked on, plus still have the kids do their lessons.  We are slowly finishing up things in school, so it's not taking them quite as long to finish lessons.  Both have finished their math, and Sarah is almost done with her language arts.  I really don't want to skip another day, as we only have about 8 days left.  I might be trying to get too much done tomorrow, so I guess we'll just see how it goes.  Paul says to skip the cleaning, but I like doing a once a week deep cleaning so it's done and I only have to do spot cleaning all week.  It's hard for me to give up that once a week cleaning, but I'm just not sure what I'll be able to do, so I guess we'll see.

Well, I'm starting to feel it in my back, so I should get going.  I hope you've all had a blessed weekend.  I should have the laptop back no later than Wednesday, I'll let you know how it goes.

That happened to my kitchen sink last month, so I feel your pain.

I'm sorry your back is bothering you. I think Paul is right and you should skip cleaning. Do you have any stretching exercises you can do for it? Sometimes that helps me to ward off more serious pain.

I hope your back feels better soon. (((HUGS)))

I am glad you all are having so much fun the Wii. The boys got a book on CD of the Hobbit and then of course the Hobbit game Cube had to come out too. I am going to do some beading today. I am feeling under the weather with a cold. I think I am going to get out some Golden Seal b/c I feel it in my lungs.

Sending you Blessings and ((HUGS)) my SSiC

Dishes in the tub. I've done that. :) Our drain plugged once when I had a sink full of dishes and no dishwasher. That was no fun. But we get through it, don't we? That video game sounds fun. Take care of yourself.

I hope yours gets clear soon--if it isn't already. No fun to bend over a bathtub to wash dishes if your back hurts.

Blessings,
Karen
