Striving to Bring Light and Truth to the World Around Me
Apr. 1, 2009
Books I Read in March

My best reading month yet!

I finished 9 books and was only about 20 pages away from finishing another one...

Here is my list and blurbs.

10 - Support Your Local Pastor by Wes Roberts (4)

Good book with lots of ideas on things you can do to encourage your pastor and his family in many different areas.

11 - For the Family's Sake by Susan Schaeffer Macaulay (3.5)

Great book on the family's foundation for teaching the children at home and during school time. It had a lot of Charlotte Mason's ideas and included suggestions for teaching children certain things.

12 - Brain Rules by John Medina (4)

Interesting book. Supposed to be about the 12 most important things that affect brain function. There were some evolutionary stuff in there, but most of his  chapters were devoted to studies and observations of patients who do certain things and it's effect on brain function....Or studies on people who have had brain changes and how it affected areas of their life. It was interesting...He actually in several places made connections to how schools aren't set up according to a successful application of these rules - and so that learning will be more challenging for students.

Some of the 12 were: Stress, Exercise, Sleep, Gender, Attention and so on. Check brainrules.net for info.

13 - Becoming a World Changing Family  by Donna Thomas (3.5)

Good book on expanding your children's view of other cultures, helping them to become missions - minded and becoming comfortable talking with people from other cultures (here in US or abroad). A good starting book.

14 - Spiritual Mothering by Susan Hunt (4)

Excellent book going through the reasons we should all mentor younger ladies in the church and also be mentored by an older lady. Also shared practical ways to get things going and the encouragement to do so.

15 - Thr3e by Ted Dekker (4)

Novel that was actually sad for me to read - dealing with the main characters struggles as a child. Brought back memories - but it was good for me to be stretched in such a way! However, next time I would want to know what was coming before reading it!

16 - The SOS for PMS - Mary Byers (4)

Good book about being aware of your monthly cycles, your hormone changes, physical changes, mood swings and how to cope with those changes. Excellent book I would recommend to any female!

17- Echoes of Mercy by Nancy Alcorn (5)

A fascinating book about this ladies desire to reach out to teen girls who were homeless or runaways or pregnant. It chronicles the start of her ministry and how it grew to be a home for unwed pregnant teens to go to to turn their life around. I'd already been leaning towards finding a teen mom ministry to get involved in, but this book has made me think about it a lot more. It's amazing the faith this lady had and the way God continues to provide for her ministry!!!

18 - Every Monday Matters by
Matthew Emerizian and Kelly Bozza (3)

I rated it lower because it wasn't what I expected it would be. It is too glitzy - lots of graphics, pages of just a famous quote from someone....and Also because it wasn't as meaty as I thought it would be. There are 52 weekly assignments to help you get over the thought that Mondays are terrible days. You open the book and are supposed to do the assignment and then do the next one the next week. I read the whole book in about 2.5 hours - a lot of the things suggested to make a difrerence we already do (like use energy bulbs and such). This would be a great book for someone who wants to make changes but doesn't know what to do.

Ok there are my reads! This is a bit longer then I intended and I could have written WAY more about these books.

If anyone knows any good books leave them in my comments nad I'll go to my library to get them!
Marie

I'll have to check these out! I have read the novel by Dekker. Maybe books should come with a "triggers" warning like SL threads? :)

Very impressive! I love reading, but have not had much time. I need to schedule it back in. Have a blessed Easter!
