We are struggling again with reading.  My son has finally learned to read over the summer months, but he is still so far behind.  I know I should be thrilled that it finally clicked and he understands it, and I am thrilled about that.  But I am also frustrated, he is still about 2 years behind where he should be. We are reading, reading, reading everyday and there seems to be no improvement.  I know it will take time.  I am just concerned that all the time we are reading should be making bigger changes than I am observing. The extra time we are devoting to reading is also lessening the amount of time we are doing, spelling, and math, and history.  ...  I guess I am just venting about a frustrating day.

Hi. Have you tried Stairway to Reading? http://www.societyforqualityeducation.org/stairway2.html

It's a free remedial reading program, where you print out the materials online to use at home. I like it because it starts with a simple reading test that shows exactly where your child is having problems, and shows which areas of the program he needs to start at - so he doesn't have to do things he already knows, and can quickly target problem areas. It also includes games and reading practice.

I'm just wondering because if he has specific problems in reading, then just reading a lot may not (quickly) target those issues, whereas if you can find out where he needs practice and help him with that quickly, you can move on to other stuff.

Just wanted to say that I can totally relate to the reading frustration. DD is almost 11 and still doesn't have a solid grasp of it. She does have visual processing issues and dyslexia but it's so hard to watch her struggle with something that her 6yo sisters are mastering quickly. I know it makes her feel badly too. One thing I found that helped was to let her pick out a book that she wanted to read. We went to an Usborne book sale and she picked one there. The textbook readers on her level are far to elementary for her in content.

Sounds like you're doing all you can. Just keep asking the Lord to bless it!
