Public school at home is different from homeschooling. But, as you probably know, I had Marissa in public school through last year. I am glad I made this choice as I am ecstatically happy with the curriculum Marissa and I use. Marissa's character has improved too. I really appreciate being able to show Marissa that God is the God of all academic topics, every day of the week and every part of your life. But, I know that every family, and indeed every child, is different. So I will not give an opinion as much as ask you to consider what I have seen as one of the greatest benefits of home educating ~
Are you happy with what is being taught in the public school? What about the pace at which it is delivered? Do you have any children that sometime need to slow down? I had a friend who tried a similar program in a different state. Her kids were doing the same thing the public school kids were doing, only they were doing it at home. They used the same texts, had similar assignments, etc.
Because of Marissa's needs, I would not do this. Public school was not working for her at school and it wouldn't work at my home. She needed something completely different to learn.

I had a friend use that for her FIRST year of homeschooling 4 children and it burned her out....EVERYDAY she had 4 SS lessons, 4 English lessons, 4 of EVERYTHING, music, art, etc...and they all 4 were completely different, she couldn't even combine them to learn together (at different levels). Which I personally think is blessing for larger families.
I never heard her complain about the subject matter, just the amount of work because she had twin 1st graders, a 3rd grader and a 4th grader...all who needed some help from mom in just about every subject EVERYDAY!!! No taking a fun day off either...because she had to report to someone every week!!!! (not sure if that is the way this particular school is set up).
She did get a 'free' computer for each child to do their work on...and submit their work.
I don't think she is at all going that route, she used it thinking it would help her stay on track for her first year...but I remember in the fall just looking at how LITERALLY worn out she was....
That is the only experience I have...just wanted to share...again that is a 'virtual' school in PA...so maybe they are each different...I don't know.
Continue to pray about it.....

The question is how much do you want to be accountable to the state of Washington for the education of your children. This curriculum requires all the same things that the public school does of its children. As a parent, you will lose some of your ability to direct the teaching. The state of Washington control's what is taught and tested. Sure you can weed out the misinformation and false facts, but if its still on the test then how are they to answer it?
The bottom line is do you want to be accountable to the state? There are other online academies that offer an excellent education without the attachment to the state The lure to this is that it is free and paid for. That's a tempting offer. But the state doesn't offer something for nothing.
Many states are losing students to homeschooling. This is a way to bring the children back into the publc system to collect the lost revenue. They are willling to compromise on location (ie. home) but they are not willing to compromise on control of curriclum. When they offer this, your child is considered a public school student in the state's eyes. They could care less what you call yourself (homeschooler) but from the public school's perspective your child is a public school student.
From the website you linked to it stated, 'Partner With Teachers Who Share Your Passion for Home-Based Education" The state of Washington is NOT your partner in raising your child or educating them. They would like to think they are but they are not. Further, they do NOT share your passion for Home Based Education. If they did they would get rid of the requirements that your state has for home educators and allow you to freely do as the Lord and yor conscience dictates.
The reality is this is NOT a partnership. They retain control and you are under their authority even while in your own home. When they say on their website, "Expect your teacher to be a consistent presence." That's exactly what they mean.
You retain physical control of your children and can certainly protect them from the physical hazards present in public school. But many of the real hazards in public education are not with the other school children but with state intervention into the private lives of its citizens. This attempt to lure homeschoolers back into the system is just one example.

Since you asked for honest opinions, I won't hold back! :0) For my family, this would never be an option. This is a public school education, which means that they will require topics that I would not approve of, such as evolution. They will require the children to use public school textbooks, which are just another part of the mass system that takes away individuality in learning. As a homeschool mom, I like that I can teach topics that my child is interested in right now. Dinosaurs instead of the solar system, United States geography instead of World geography, etc, etc. I also like to have the freedom of going at my child's pace without having to report to the school system every week. I'm sure you've thought of these things, just thought I'd post my 2 cents. I guess the bottom line is, I enjoy my "freedom" to teach my children what, how, and when I want...I'm afraid you'll lose that in a program such as the one you are considering. But, on the other hand, it might work for your family depending on what goals you have for their learning experiences. Just keep it in prayer and I will pray that God will guide you in making the right choice! -Brandi

Hi! I'm semi-new to HSB. I signed up a while back, but just started posting. :-)
I found your blog through another HSB blog. We're also in Louisiana (central).
I added you to my friends and can't wait to read more from you.
For what it's worth, I agree with Brandi about this topic.
