I really appreciated all of the input. All of it was very valuable to me, but the biggest wake-up call was the idea of losing the ability to do unit studies which is not only a huge time saver for us, but we really enjoy sitting at the table working on our notebooks and flapbooks together. It is much anticipated and a great creative outlet for all of us. I would not have time to do that and I would have to instead do separate lessons for each child.
Right now, we do Math, Reading/Reading Comprehension, and Spelling separately, but we do EVERYTHING else Unit Study-style (Bible, History, SS, Geography, Art, Science, etc.) Even our Composition time is all done at the table together.
Plus, I would miss being able to pick what subjects we learn and I would not like the evolution and some of the other agendas that may be included.
What I am going to need though (and I cannot afford anything even slightly expensive) is some sort of record-keeping plan for high school starting next year. My dh really would prefer that we do the virtual academy for high school so they will have actual diplomas, but I am less concerned about that than I am transcripts. I need to go back and read Homeschooling the Highschooler.
My friend uses Barb Shelton's Form+u+LA. I need to ask her to show it to me. I know she really likes it.
For those of you with high school students... what are you doing in this area?
Kaitlyn should be in high school this year, but is still not quite ready academically. She needs a little more time on Math and Writing. She is really becoming stronger in her reading and her Spelling is great. She can hold her own at about an 8th grade level, but I am not sure she is quite ready for 9th grade yet and since she has a Summer birthday I think giving her up to one more year would be fine.
But then... we need to really start keeping transcripts and such.
I personally would love to BUY a curriculum or something, but just cannot afford it. Period. It is simply NOT an option.
Opinions, PLEASE!
And thanks so much to all of you who gave input on the virtual academy and I so appreciate your HONESTY! It really helped me think it through!
