Wanna listen in on one of my weird trains of thought?
We all start out rather HOLEY in our spiritual walk...
If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins,
O Lord, who could stand?
(Psalm 130:3)
15I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[c] For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
21So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22For in my inner being I delight in God's law; 23but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. 24What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!
So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God's law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.
(Romans 7: 15-25)
But, even while we were in this "holey", incomplete and utterly useless position God had a plan for us!
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
(Romans 5:8)
'Be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy.
(Leviticus 19:2)
because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
(Hebrews 10:14)
Because the God to whom I WHOLLY surrender MY will and MY way is Holy... I am being made HOLY... which is really hard to imagine since I can only see things from my VERY human perspective.
This is where TOTAL trust comes into play!
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight. [a]
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD and shun evil.
8 This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones.
(Proverbs 3:5-8)
1"I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes[a] so that it will be even more fruitful. 3You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.
9"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. 12My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. 13Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. 14You are my friends if you do what I command. 15I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. 16You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Then the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 17This is my command: Love each other.
(John 15:1-17)
In my imperfection, I realize that I cannot achieve anything of true worth on my own. I acknowlege my total dependency upon God and let HIM be the VINE and realize my role as the BRANCH. Then, when I begin to be wholeheartedly devoted to Him and WHOLLY surrendered to HIS WiLL for my life, He can begin that pruning process to take my HOLEY nature and begin to shape me into the HOLY, express image of Christ spoken of in His Word.
May He reshape me and make me into HIS character that I may glorify HIM and bear good fruit to further HIS kingdom.
Think of this next time you sing the hymn HOLY, HOLY, HOLY is the LORD God Almighty...
He is HOLY, HOLY, HOLY!!!! TRIPLE HOLY... but I am HOLEY, WHOLLY, HOLY!!! Praise God for His infinite MERCY and GRACE!!!!
