Our First Garden

Preparing the raised bed.

Taking a little break! Sure was HOT that day!

MY HERO... I couldn't have done it without him! Here he is hauling in garden mix from the truck in the front yard. By the time we go to the second load of dirt we just drove the truck right into the back yard! That was a lot easier!

Hannah wasn't much help, but she sure was cute!
Actually, she and Noah brought us water to drink and LOTS of it!

Not the greatest soil to start with... we took advice from my good friend, J'Anna and added composted chicken manure to amend the soil!

We built up our base of soil to the top of the raised bed. Sounds easy enough, but I forgot to mention that this process involved cutting down two trees and hauling them out too! So by this time we were pretty tired!

How about some iced tea?
I passed on this offer b/c they loaded it up with sugar! YUCK!
Don't get me wrong, I like sugar, but this cup of ice tea had about of solid inch of sugar in the bottom of the tumbler!

Quimby watched to make sure we did everything right! :)

Jordan was a HUGE amount of help to us!

This picture is funny b/c it looks like Ian is nothing but rib bones, but really its just shadows. He is actually my hardest worker most of the time.
And even though it looks like the other children are just watching they were a great help to me that day!

Isn't this a flattering picture???
I was so hot that I splashed some water into my own face, but it was ICE cold and went up my nose. Fortuneately, Kaitlyn managed to take a picture of me at just that moment! Good grief!

I love it when they all get along with each other. This was a very pleasant day, indeed!

Don't worry! He's not dangerous!

I love this picture. Its kind of artsy!
Kaitlyn was the official photographer that day. She did a lot of other things too, but she is the best photographer in the family so I gave her this additional task!

We didn't actually manage to get the starts INTO the ground that day b/c we had dinner plans at a friend's house, but here I had set the starts out just to get an idea of the spacing I would need!

Here's my garden planning "MAP"...

Here is the "finished" or rather STARTED project!
By the way, the extra boards in front of the raised bed is bender board set up for more cement border to be poured!
We are new to all of this homesteady type stuff. We will see how it goes!

I wonder what your love language is. Is one of them acts of service? You seem genuinely thrilled when your sweetie does things for you. How nice that the longer we're married the easier it is to speak their love language.

Okay, I was just at Mary/CanadaGirl's blog and she blogged about gardening too. Actually what you did... is what my DH wants to do. He wants to give the kids an opportunity to help put food on the table.
Didn't Kaitlyn get that camera for her birthday? I think it should have come with a contract. No taking pictures of me when I am doing something unflattering or goofy. Actually, I liked this picture... it looked like you were all having fun and enjoying each other's company. That is what family is all about!

Remind me of my gardens up in MD. Here in FL I haven't gotten into the whole gardening thing. By now here, it's too hot and I have to wait till fall. The fire ants are enough to keep me away..
Have fun. What a blessing it is to have such plenty!! Just think , in a couple weeks you'll be eating straight from your garden!

Awwww! You dog Quimby is ADORABLE! Also, that close- up picture of your daughter is cute. She has some of the prettiest blue eyes!
I saw the afgans and baby blankets you crocheted in the previous posts... I am going to learn how to crochet next week and I'm really thrilled about it! I think it is such a wonderful hobby and can be used as a ministry tool. You know, like crocheting blankets for people in the nursing home, shelter, etc.
Those are really pretty names you posted on my blog. You made me depressed when you mentioned about your miscarriages. : ( I'm sorry.
Cassia is a good name considering it is closely related to my name (Cassidy). My middle name is Jean (alot like Jane) and I actually plan on changning it to my last name when I get married. I promised my grandmother years ago that I would name one of my children after her, and that's as close as I will get to naming my child after her.I must keep my promise and I won't use her first name, Barbara. haha

Speaking of Quimby... A girl that I know found a Boston Terrier so she started playing with her. Well, the dog has been at her house for a month now, and no one has been looking for the dog. It's cute, because the girl has bought the dog a collar and has painted her nails. Oh, and she named it, too! Delilah!

Nice to meet you, thanks for visiting my blog!
We love gardening here. I've learned to do the layering method, because our soil is so rocky it's almost impossible to till the soil.
This year my oldest is doing sunflowers and broccoli and an herb garden. We'll see how that works out!
Peace and Laughter,
Cristina

Thanks for stopping by. It seems for some reason that my blog templates don't show up on everyone's computer. I do have a solid background, but I guess it's not showing up. Sorry about that. Sometimes if you highlight it all, it will show up.
Have a great weekend.

Great Job and I love the size of your yard. It's beautiful. We have a small yard and just the other day I came to contentment with it and thanked the Lord for our little yard =) I also am going to start making plans to make it our haven.
Thanks for keeping my family in your prayers. It means a lot to us =)
In Him,
Linda<><
