Modest Swimwear Solutions
I am pretty picky about what my daughters wear (and myself, of course). I am probably considered extremely conservative for the area I live in and somewhat liberal compared to some of you. I seem to always be the odd man out no matter who I am with! LOL!
Anyway, we don't wear tank tops usually, although if they have a very wide top, are not low cut under the arm pit or on the chest I sometimes allow my youngest to wear tank tops just at home for pajamas only. We wear them UNDER another layer, but I am not fond of the bare shoulder look (especially if it gaps under the arm and shows a lot of flesh).
We don't wear shorts unless they are more like short capris... all the way to the knee and then only if they are not "sucky tight". We are not dresses only, but we wear skirts a lot of the time. We never show cleavage! If we put our hand on our collar bone with thumb on one side and pointer finger on the other side (palm facing chest) and any skin shows beneath the bottom of our hands then we put on that tank top under layer.
We do not show ANY belly at all. The pants or skirt must overlap the shirt even with arms raised or it is back to that tank top (a long one) to prevent exposure.
We don't like tight blouses that show too much form, but this one has a hard one to define. If the clothing springs back when touched it is probably stretched too tight.
Skirts come at least down to the knee and are not tight and form fitting.
So, this brings me to swimwear. Yikes. Even if we are modest it is hard not to have our eyes accosted... not only at the beach, but in the grocery store check out line! My youngest is "famous" for turning all the magazines over and declaring the covergirls as "IMMODEST"!!!
We did find a cute suit for Kaitlyn HERE. The attached shorts ARE a bit shorter than I like though so we bought it in a too big size and just altered it so it would fit more modestly.
For the past two years I have bought suits for Hannah HERE. I got one for MYSELF there this year too and I will probably get the next one we need for Kaitlyn there as they are custom made and can be made longer easily!
A friend (thanks Jocelyn) also told me about THIS great place to buy swimwear! Looks great too!
My boys do wear rash guard shirts too, mostly for more sun protection, but there is really no need to run around half dressed anyway.
I realize I am probably going to have a few of you rolling your eyes at me b/c I am too strict or not strict enough. I hope though that you will just pray about this matter and bring it before your husband to decide upon a policy for YOUR own family!
If you know of any other great sites that sell modest swimwear or other clothing, please let me know!

Not that I would EVER go swimming at a nude beach... but in many parts of Europe and Australia, nude or topless swimming is the norm. I had an interesting conversation with a classmate in vet school who was originally from Europe, and she had no problem with it, because it was the cultural norm there. In fact, she preferred swimming without a swimsuit, because you get less dirt, etc stuck to your skin, and can dry off easier. She felt that it was cleaner, just like you don't shower in clothing.
So my point is not meant to argue or say you are wrong, but merely to bring up discussion... how much of your opinion do you think is culturally motivated? Do you think you would have a different view if you had grown up in a different culture? Again, I am not at all intending to attack, I'm just curious how much you think is absolutely required to be that way, and how much is a response to cultural norms.

Thanks for the sites. I have been having my dds wear wet suits. However, when the older one started swimming lessons at the YWCA they said she couldn't wear the wet suit because of the floaty inserts. We tried on every bathing suit at Kmart and ended up combining two to make it mostly ok with me. (a one piece and swim shorts from a two piece.)
Blessings,
Dawn

I agree with you! We dress pretty modest too.
I am curious...what area of Washington do you live? Between now and October, My husband will be taking 3 week long classes up in the Seattle area, and we are gonna tag along and stay in the hotel. It would be really cool to actually meet you guys!

Thanks for posting this. I know what you mean about always being the oddball. I feel that too. It is hard these days to find a bathing suit that I feel comfortable in or I will allow my 11 year-old to wear. I especially had it rough this year being pregnant. I finally found one. It was a bit too low cut, but I figured out a way to tie it tighter at the neck.

No eye rolling here! I know exactly what you mean.
I do like my boys to dress modest, and luckily they do. I had my 9yo complaining the other day, because his shorts didn't go all the way down to his knees. lol They were about an inch and a half above the knee. He's my perfectionist. ;)
I HATE public pools. I have a 15yos, and I just wish girls would where SOMETHING to the pools. They might as well throw on a couple of bandaids. Seriously! I don't have my own pool, so we use the public pool and I just hope he learns to turn his eyes away when he is confronted with that. He is so young.
It's nice to know I am not the only one who has strict rules for her boys. Most do for their girls but not their boys, it's just really nice to know I am not the only one who makes my boys dress modestly. lol

Reading through your comments... cultural norm affecting your dress? I don't think the person that left that comment has seen how girls and women dress now days!! You are already dressing differently than the norm... I really liked those birqinis or whatever they were called ROFLOL!!! As a homeschooler I count that link as my social studies for the day.

You're welcome for the link. I hope the Lord shows you what to do about swimsuits. :)
I'm going to be writing a post on cultural modesty. I'm really tired of hearing that if it's accepted in your culture as ok than it's ok for you to do it. If we as Christians we are following the word, it's not our culture we must go by in regards to clothing. If we really want to know the definition of modesty in regards to the Bible we have to look at the Jewish cultural because that is what the authors of the Bible had as an example of modesty and that is the culture that the Lord set standards for.

I have read the comments..... and I do feel you need to respect culture. I live in Africa, and it is "natural" for young adolescent african girls to display their chests/breasts! Even the African Christian communities do this!!! Does God disagree??? or does he see their heart? I think we must try and keep our hearts pure, and know that God is interested in more than our outside appearance!.... He sees way more than we can even imagine..... that's frightening!!!!!

I think it's interesting that when Adam and Even ate the fruit (of the tree of KNOWLEDGE of good and evil) the FIRST thing they noticed was that they were naked. There's a Casting Crowns song (hehe) that says "Can't you see that God's gotta change her heart before he changes her shirt". There's definitely truth in that - but we can't allow our girls (who call on Jesus's name) to flaunt their bodies and call it a cultural norm. Such a big issue!

yep, we swim in modest swimwear found this pattern probably 8 years ago. http://www.modest-swimwear.net/index.htm Easy to make.
And for the record, I also think there was a reason that Adam and Eve we're naked and felt no shame and then after their eyes were open, the first thing they did was make clothes. Not a cultural thing at all to run around undressed.
Blessings,
Christine

I feel the same way about modesty. I have stopped swimming at all because I just can't fathom the idea of donning a swim suit, aka underware, in front of people who see me dressed all the time. My girls are still 5 and under and I am starting to investigate the options for them. We already have the raise your arms rule, if you see skin the shirt must go. Katie, our 5 yo dd loves skirts without any prompting from me. I have altered several for her. My mom though loves to be sarcastic and ask if we are now Amish! I just remember that I am not here to please the world or even my extended family, I am here to serve the Lord and do as He leads my husband.

Remember me? I used to blog here at Small Town Homeschool and you sent my daughter the most beautiful afghan when she was born. I just wanted to stop by and see if you were still blogging and I am so pleased that you are! BTW, my daughter still sleeps with that blanket every night...it is her favorite!
I'm so glad to see you posting about modesty. I have been convicted lately about my own apparel and have gone to mostly skirts and dresses.
I would love to hear from you! You can find me now at: http://mountainmorning.blogspot.com
Stop by sometime! :0)

www.LandsEnd.com actually has a few good swimming selections. (You just have to pair up different swim shirts with skirts or shorts.) There's also http://www.wholesomewear.com/ that supposedly has a good selection.
God bless!
