New Goddaughter's Gift!

Almost 9 years ago my first goddaughter was born in December 2000.  I wanted to make a very special gift for her and this was in the time frame before it was a given for me to start crocheting when anyone close to me said the word "baby"!  But that is exactly what I did!

Photobucket

Here's a picture of her with her custom afghan at just a few months old.  Now, this afghan never became a favorite with her since it was made with just "regular" yarn instead of the beloved ultra-soft stuff I use now... so she got an all pink fluffy one a few years later (which I am told is nearing the need for replacement as it is so well-loved! ) But anyway, my oldest daughter, Kaitlyn called this blanket the rainbow sherbet afghan and I even ended up  making one with the same colors for her at that time.  (I think she still has it too).

Photobucket

When my fifth godchild (and fourth godDAUGHTER) was born last month I immediately got started on an afghan for her...  same colors...  fluffy yarn!

Photobucket

So, here it is...  a rainbow sherbet Bundled in Prayer afghan for my new little god daughter, Aspen Cheyenne who joined her four older siblings: Sierra Renee (almost 9), Savannah Alexis (soon to be 7), Logan Scott (4), and Madison Danae (who turned 2 two weeks after Aspen's birth!)

As soon as I have permission from her mommy, I will post pictures of her.  For now, you'll just have to take my word for it that she is adorable and at 1 month old already has a smile that could steal a heart!

What Hannah Wrote About Me!

LOL!  After I typed up Noah's little blurb I opened Hannah's math folder and found this note in it:

Dear Mom if your'e reading this & your'e just frusterated then i need to tell you i love you and i like to bring you joy so you can take it & keep it! Love your sweet & encoraging Hannah

Isn't that cute?  I have a migraine today, so I guess she thought I needed some cheering up!

By the way, She drew a heart around the word "love" too!

What Noah Wrote About Me!

Today in Noah's Reading Comprehension lesson a question asked:

"Pick out one of the traits listed in Number 3 above and write a few sentences giving an example of this trait in your mother."

Just so you know, the list of words to chose from in Question Number 3 is below:

Hopeful

Prayerful

Patient

Quiet

Faithful

Tender

Truthful

Noah's Answer:

"Prayerful because she prays for people. Faithful because she has faith in God and truthful because she is usually right."

I didn't know whether to laugh or say, "And don't you forget it! "

Kefir

According to Wikipedia:

Kefir grains are a combination of bacteria and yeasts in a matrix of proteins, lipids, and sugars. This symbiotic matrix forms grains that resemble cauliflower. Today, kefir is becoming increasingly popular due to new research into its health benefits. Many different bacteria and yeasts are found in the kefir grains, which are a complex and highly variable community of micro-organisms.[2]

I have been learning about kefir and its benefits for awhile now and was thrilled when my friend, Julia, invited me over to share some of her grains with me and to teach me the art of kefiring!

Photobucket

First the finished kefire was poured into a strainer.  It must be a plastic strainer and only non metal items can be used on the kefir. Metal will deactivate the good bacterium.

Photobucket

After stirring until all the curds and whey were in the bowl and the kefir grains were left in the strainer the finished product was poured into very clean glass jars.  The jars must not be hot. Heat will also deactivate the kefir's full effectiveness.

Photobucket

Here you can see the curds and whey of the finished product BEFORE it was strained.

Photobucket

Plastic lids are the easiest, but you can also wrap metal lids in plastic wrap.

Photobucket

I have read that it is good to not fully tighten down the lid to leave room for the new gases to escape.

Photobucket

In this case 2 Tbs. were placed in each clean jar and then they were "fed" with 2 c. of raw milk.  Raw milk is the most beneficial.  I have read sugar/lemon water, rice milk and other forms of kefiring can also be useful.

Photobucket

Here is what is called the kefir grains.  They are not grains like wheat.  They are clusters of beneficial bacteria that look like a sort of gelatinous cottage cheese.

Photobucket

The kefir grain is coated with a stringy sort of gel.  It is a good thing Julia pointed this out to me because I would have thought that hair had gotten into the kefir!

Photobucket

The kefir smells somewhat sour... like sour dough or plain yogurt.  Actually kefir is a lot like a liquid yogurt and I have read that it will be thinner or thicker depending on the amount of time it is allowed to ferment and the exact ingredients used in the process.

The flavor is also similar to plain yogurt, but is quite pleasant when added to a smoothie!

It grows quickly!  I started with 4 Tbs. of kefir grains 10 days ago and now have 12 Tbs. worth of grains!

Every 1 1/2 to 2 days the process is repeated by allowing the grains sit on the kitchen counter until it reaches the curds and whey stage.  The finished product is placed in the fridge to be used through the coming days and the grains are fed and set out to make more!

The kefir can ferment in the fridge but will take longer...  about a week.  The grains are most "awake" at room temperature.

The finished kefir can last for a month in the fridge or so I am told.  We are using it pretty quickly so we don't really know yet! We are looking forward to sharing grains with others interested in improving their health!

Is She Outgrowing Hannah-isms?

It's been a long time since my little mini me gave us any cute Hannah-isms.  I was thinking she had outgrown that hilariously cute little girl stage and had moved into her bigger girl stuff, but then... two of them in one week! Well, one is funny and the other is just dear and precious, while being kind of funny in the way she words herself!

Firstly, she was answering a question in a workbook that asked what bees collect... her answer: "polester and honey".  (she meant polyester!)  Don't worry I told her that they collect pollen and nectar to MAKE honey, but her answer made me chuckle.  This is the girl who knew the words polyester cotton blend and synthetic fibers when she was 3.  I am NOT kidding!

Secondly,

Here is what she wrote in her journal today:

Go Mom!

Dear Mom if youre reading this. I want to tell you i truly love you & that i will always love you no matter what Happens.

The End

and we will live Happily ever after.

Isn't that just sweet?

Happy Birthday Mom!

Posted in Other Ponderings

Photobucket

Dear Mom I want your birthday to be a special one! So.... to celebrate, I thought that it would be fun to throw you a party!!!

The room is decorated with purple balloons and one is tied on each of the guests' chairs! There are streamers and a cream lace tablecloth with silver confetti scattered all over!

There is a lovely bouquet of purple roses arranged with little white babies' breath, mingled in with the bouquet! Don't they smell lovely?

The best part of this party is no clean up! No cooking and no prep! This is the perfect thing for my lovely Quietcajun!

I know you said that you didn't want any cake, but I don't think you will mind this one! It is chocolate angel food cake and it will be served to all the guests! Don't worry this one is fat free, carb free, high fructose corn syrup free! Enjoy with out being bad!

For beverages we will have rose-petal tea, with the finest of roses, of course! All set in a lovely teapot with lavendar colored flowers and matching china plates.

All of the guests will be clothed in beautiful purple gowns, and each one will wear a big floppy purple hat. Don't worry about getting the lace tablecloth dirty, or even take off your white gloves, this kind of fabric will not absorb stains! *wink, wink*

So sit back and enjoy this birthday party, don't forget to stop by and wish quietcajun a warm, heartfelt Happy birthday of your own!

Love,

 Kaitlyn

My name is Christina. I am 38 years old and have been happily married to my best friend, Russ for over 18 years! My username is quietcajun, but I am neither quiet, nor cajun! The nickname is based on my children's initials! The first four children are: Kaitlyn (16), Jordan (14 next month), Ian (12.5), and Noah (10 next month)... put their first intials together and you get KJIN (cajun). Sarah Hope is one of our babies in Heaven and Hannah (8 in September) is my youngest (so far). Put S and H together and you get SH as in SHHHH... QUIET. Get it? Thus, quietcajun! We are in our 12th year of homeschooling. We have tried public school, but we soon realized how important it is that they be HOME at all costs. Now we are back to having them all home again! It's not always easy, but it is for the BEST! Two of our children have Asperger's Syndrome. That is an adventure in itself. We are still learning! This blog is a place for me to sort out the daily joys and challenges of life as a mother and wife as I strive to love and know God more and bring GLORY to HIM in EVERY part of my LIFE!!!!
