First Day of School - 2009

We started school this week!  It was a different kind of "first day of school" for me.  I've always loved school.  I still remember being a child and smelling the new crayons at the store when we were shopping for supplies.  I loved being a teacher and spending the time organizing, preparing, and stocking the classroom for a year of wonderful learning adventures.  Even now I find myself energized when working through the lesson planning process for our school year.  I know not everyone is as excited about such things learning has always been a love of mine.

Oddly I found myself rushed and tired to begin our school year this week.  It seemed that our summer break was squeezing every ounce it could out of us and we were quite busy right up to the end.  We returned home from a visit to Grandma and Grandpas the afternoon before the first day.  Whew!  I was physically set to begin but a little nervous that I wasn't spiritually or mentally ready to go.  Funny.  As we began on Monday morning I pondered my feelings at "break time".  My feelings were not elation, extreme joy, or trepidation but rather it seemed like putting on a really comfortable set of clothes.  It was normal.  Now, lots of you may think but school should be exciting or fun all the time.  School is fun and exciting sometimes but normal was just right for us this week.  It was like taking a long cool drink after a hard days work.  It reminded me that "this" (homeschooling, home-discipleship) is who we (dh, me, and the kiddos) are.  We are a family that thrives in this life-style.  It is "normal" for us.
