Garden News

Here are some photos from our garden. We have so enjoyed this experience. I've been able to make yummy salads and even freeze some beans for this winter. The children love checking out the progress the pumpkins are making.

I have been amazed at the tremendous sense of freedom that comes with growing your own food. It also tastes incredible!

Planting the Garden
We planted our garden Memorial Day Weekend but I haven't had time to get the photos up. Here are some of the highlights.

We enjoyed our planting day. It was a day filled with lots of playing outside, the smell of sunscreen on laughing kiddos, and one sweaty momma and daddy. We all enjoyed the wonder of planting such small seeds into the ground and imagining them growing into something big and yummy!
It certainly didn't take long for things to pop up through the ground. I'll have to get some photos of the garden now. It is really taking off! I found a bunny in the yard this morning. Now, normally I really like bunnies but not in my garden, no no no bunnies, go away! I'm turning into Mr. McGregor!!!

Preparing the Soil
We began our summer long science experiment today...our square foot garden! Daddy has been busy gathering all the ingredients to make our soil mix. He called around to get the best price on the different things we needed (vermiculite, peat moss, and a bit of compost) and then drove around to get them too. Today he mixed everything up on a big tarp in the backyard and we all helped in some way. Here are some photos to show the process.

DH adding some of our "homemade" compost

Now some peatmoss

Mixing it all up...our tarp started to get a hole in it so we had to be a bit gentle with it!
We have three boxes in the yard and another up on our deck. The one on the deck will be for lettuce, tomatoes and other salad type veggies. Our seed order arrived last week and the children were very excited. We had to talk about NOT opening the packages. We hope to plant during Memorial Day Weekend and then wait and pray for things to grow! I'll post pictures of the process all summer.
