Political Telephone Survey

Posted in Politics- Probably Ranting

(Completely off  Blog Topic)

Soon after we awoke the phone started ringing. It wasn't obnoxiously early but earlier than I tend to like to receive calls so I figured it was either a business or someone we know who refuses to cooperate with our house phone rules. Knowing I tend to be less than hospitable with the latter, my husband answers the phone. After  a few moments my husband confirms what he thinks my current age to be and hands me the phone with "You want to talk to them?"

I LOVE surveys. I love to guess who has paid for it and for what purpose.

Today's topic: Things of interest in your local community. Seattle,  the metro area we are suburb to, has always been greeny-fied. Even a plundering capitalist like me can look around at the gorgeous views around and have a tiny  twinge of understanding. The raging influx of Californians (of which I am one, but I married into the state before it was the new cool thing to do) have brought their nanny state socialism and turned us into a true blue state ( I still seethe over the left being recolored blue so the communist red would no longer accurately potray them.) This should be good.

Question number 1: Do you think the United States is going  pretty good or has the United States has gone way off track.  (The bolding designates 100% actual wording, the rest of it may only  be 98%.) Notice the barely hopeful "pretty good" and the emphatic "way off track." Nice non-neutral language choices to start your day.

Now, I'm a smart shopper. You don't have to tell me twice what they want to hear. You also don't have to tell me what each answers is going to mean to them. If I say "way off track" they aren't going to ask me why, they are going to assume that I meant  Bush is a horrible president and wouldn't Hillary be a nice lovely breath of fresh air . Or something equally evil.

So I say "pretty good."  This answer  means now I have to be "qualified" to have an opinion.  Why don't they "qualify" you before you answer their poll? Why do they ask you the question first and THEN determine if they want your answer to count. Why not get the demographic requirements settled  before they even ask me the question?  Oh, because then they couldn't see if I am going to give the "right" answer.

Our household apparently doesn't make enough money to count in this poll.

Sep. 26, 2007 - I'm not a raging environmentalist, but

I hate these surveys. They are so obnoxious. I had one about clean coal, and it was all about how much money the *government* would save if we went to clean coal, and how did I think the extra money should be spent? The choices were things like "protecting the environment" "drilling for fossil fuels in the polar ice caps" "grant funding to support green businesses" etc. There was no "kick it back to the consumers who are already freaking broke on paying exorbitant energy costs" option.

They also asked the same questions at the beginning & end of the survey, which makes me think it was more about advertising the virtues of clean coal, because it will last for 230 years before we have to find something else. I guess to see if they'd swayed you by the end of the 30 minute phone call.

I just kept saying I thought we needed renewable resources, not something that will be gone in 230 years, and that I wanted the leftover money kicked back to ME. I just wasn't sold on the idea that clean coal was in any way a GREEN choice, and heck, if there's money leftover, give me some!!!
