Dishwashing (SMART Habits Saturday)

While blog surfing recently I cam across a lady who grew up in the Australian outback using cistern water. She talked about how wasteful we are in sending perfectly good water down the drain. It got me thinking about one simple habit I keep thinking  I should adapt.

Currently as I rinse dishes I use running water. It is a horrible bad habit that I do without thinking. I will even let the water run as I step away "just for a moment"  to grab a dish off the stove or table or whatever. So the habit I want to implement is to fill the sink with water and use that one sinkful of water to rinse all my dishes before loading them into the dishwasher. I know this will save a lot of water because the few times I have managed to remember to do it  I am always amazed at how early on in the process of rinsing I turn off the water.

a friend told me she never rinses before putting dishes in the washer. i tried it--i just scraped off food scraps into the trash and the dishes came out fine. i don't usually do it though because i fear it will shorten the life of my dishwasher.

Great habit to work on. I've been trying to remember to turn off the water when I brush my teeth. Every little bit helps.

That sounds like a great habit. We wash all our dishes by hand. I don't know if it saves on water but I hope so. I do know that I use too much water in the shower though. I get so warm in there that I don't want to get out!

this is a great habit. we don't have a dishwasher so we have to wash by hand but i don't have a basin to do it in. your post made me really think about that and i am off to get one tomorrow :O) we do a lot of other things to conserve water at our house and i truly believe every little bit counts. have a great week!
