I have been thinking about this. We have been working so hard to get our workbook materials done in that "180 day" time frame that the state requires. It is the states only requirement, that we have 180 days of school. We are doing pretty good with our schedule that we follow now, and a part of me does not want to stop just because Summer is coming. I really want to finish out the books, and we have some exciting new books to start, that I could see starting, oh, say, mid-summer? After a, oh, maybe? three week break?
Anyone out there homeschool all year with texts? Or do your school days just go all year because your lifestyle is that of a learning style? Just rambling here, but it sure has my thoughts going. |
• Mar. 22, 2006 - We do it all year - eclectically (is that a word?)
Hello! I noticed the 180 day time frame, and since you stated there weren't any other requirements, I wondered if you were from Indiana. And you are. So are we. We are in South Whitley, 20mi west of Fort Wayne.
Anyway, we "officially start" on the day after Labor Day and take breaks as needed. It is not a set schedule every year. If we are taking a vacation or having a baby or something like that, we just plan our 'time off' around it. Of course, we rarely take much time off, and there are times when we just do hands-on school during that vacation, instead of book work. We rarely take a break that is more than a week or two.
We also garden all summer and do other work around the house, which is Life Skills 101.... we have a large aquarium that we keep on our porch in front of our large window. The children put any kind of small creature they can find in it,as well as catching the bugs, etc. to feed them and we leave it outside all summer and watch the excitement. I think I will post more in my blog! I don't want to go on more!!
Anyway, I love doing school all year, and I hated stopping for summer, only to get out of the habit, then drag them back into it 3mo later!!
I also hated making the children stick to a regimented textbook only style - we did that for several years. This is much more fun and they love it. Our children get to bake and do all kinds of projects they learn through.
Sorry it is so-o long!
Many Blessings! Jacque
